The Cat

The children's household cat, who gives birth to three kittens in a coke-crate under the kitchen bench; her maternal anxiety and grief -- pacing, mewing, retrieving her kittens from the hatboxes, and searching the rooms after Nero eats them -- registers more sincerely than any of the adult humans' reactions.
