1 Written from Moscow on 5 April 1888 to Maria Vladimirovna Kiseleva, a family friend and writer who, with her husband Alexei Sergeyevich Kiselev, owned the Babkino estate where the Chekhovs summered. The occasion is a story Kiseleva has submitted for publication, and the letter is a teasing report on its reception mixed with mock-solemn warnings about Chekhov’s own literary standing.
2 Chekhov relays – to Kiseleva, about her – that Fyodor Berg, publisher of "Russky Vestnik," had never heard of her and had not seen her story, then plays at literary omnipotence, threatening to ruin her reputation "in all Europe" unless she flatters him. He goes on to needle her about the story’s excessive length, inventing a mock agreement in which "Chekhovs and Shakespeares" may write as long as they please, and accuses her of secretly plotting to pass off her own work under his name via her daughter. He closes with joking greetings to the Kiselev household – including the family dog and cat, and a running joke about disciplining a boarder nicknamed Koklyusha – and regret that he cannot yet visit Babkino.

Today I had a visit from Berg, the publisher of "Russky Vestnik." I asked him whether he had seen your story, madam. He said he had not seen it, and that this was the very first time in his life he had even heard of you, madam (ah, what an unpopular authoress!). He asked me: is Madame Kiseleva talented? I answered:
Сегодня у меня был издатель "Русского вестника" Берг. Я спросил его, видел ли он повесть г-жи Киселевой. Он сказал, что не видел, а о г-же Киселевой слышит только первый раз в жизни (ах, какая непопулярная писательница!). Он спросил меня: талантлива ли г-жа Киселева? Я ответил:
– Hm... How shall I put it? Perhaps...
– Гм... Как Вам сказать? Пожалуй...
He said: I shall bear her in mind.
Он сказал: я буду ее иметь в виду.
So then, he has not seen or read your story, for which I congratulate you (not without a touch of malice). You are being punished for repeated disobedience; as for me, I shall not stop, at every convenient opportunity, from now on saying: hm...

In literary circles I am now a power that can do you much good or much harm, depending on how you conduct yourself toward my genius. If you do not treat me to cordial, praise my talent, and let your big eyes go on spying on me, I shall bring you down in the estimation of all Europe and not let you print a single line...
В литературных сферах я теперь сила, которая может принести Вам много добра или много зла, смотря по тому, как Вы будете вести себя по отношению к моей гениальности. Если не будете угощать меня наливкой, восхвалять мой талант и будете позволять Вашим большим глазам шпионить за мной, то я уроню Вас во мнении всей Европы и не позволю Вам напечатать ни одной строки...
As for the length of your story, that is, nine printer’s sheets, it’s true that such a flood makes for a considerable inconvenience, both for the journal and for the author. Might you not find it possible to cut down your offspring (unbaptized as it is) to five or six sheets? The trouble is that long stories wait a long time for their turn, while short ones are like the police chief who always finds himself a place in church, even when there’s nowhere for an apple to fall. After all, nine sheets will have to be broken up over three issues! In a single issue an author may count on at most three sheets. True, my own "Steppe" runs to six sheets, but then for Chekhovs and Shakespeares no law is written, especially when the Shakespeare or the Chekhov takes his lady editor by the throat and says:
Что касается размера Вашей повести, т. е. девяти листов, то, правда, такое половодье составляет для журнала и для автора чувствительное неудобство. Не найдете ли Вы возможным сократить Ваше детище (некрещеное) до 5–б листов? Дело в том, что большие повести долго ждут очереди, а маленькие подобны городничему, который найдет себе место в церкви, даже когда негде яблоку упасть. Ведь 9 листов придется дробить на 3 номера! В одном номере автор может располагать тахшшт тремя листами. Правда, в моей "Степи" шесть листов, но ведь для Чеховых и Шекспиров закон не писан, особливо если Шекспир или Чехов берет редакторшу за горло и говорит:
– Print it, Ma-Ste, all six sheets, or else you’ll get nothing for your pains!
– Печатай, Ма-Сте, все шесть листов, а то получишь кукиш с маслом!
But you are no Shakespeare and no Chekhov, though, to be sure, you do dream (oh, I know your little tricks!) of one day giving my name to your daughter, so as to pass off your own works as hers and sign them, instead of "Kiseleva," "Chekhova." But that will not succeed with you!
Вы же не Шекспир и не Чехов, хотя, впрочем, и мечтаете (о, я знаю Ваши хитрости!) дать в будущем Вашей дочери мое имя с тем, чтобы свои произведения выдавать за ее и подписывать вместо "Киселева" – "Чехова". Но это Вам не удастся!
If you do find it possible to shorten the story, do not be too zealous about it, and do not throw out what is needed and important.
Если найдете возможным сокращать повесть, то не особенно усердствуйте и не выбросьте того, что нужно и важно.

My regards to Vasilisa and to Elizaveta Alexandrovna. Tell Koklyusha that we have already cleared out the little closet for him, where he will live together with the dog that has no back and with the cat. By the agreement I have concluded with Alexei Sergeyevich, we shall birch Koklyusha twice a week, and Vasilisa every time she comes to visit. A separate fee is charged for the birching. We shall give our boarder dinner at Easter and at Whitsun.
Поклон Василисе и Елизавете Александровне. Коклюшу передайте, что мы уже очистили для него чуланчик, где он будет жить с собачкой без спины и с кошкой. По условию, заключенному у меня с Алексеем Сергеевичем, Коклюша мы будем сечь два раза в неделю, а Василису всякий раз, когда она будет приезжать. За сеченье особая плата. Обедать будем давать пансионеру на Пасху и на Троицу.
I am very sorry that I cannot come to Babkino just now. The weather is fiendishly fine.
