The Steppe

"The Steppe"

also: Степь, маленькая повестушка

The novella Chekhov was writing for Severny Vestnik in early 1888 at Korolenko's encouragement, his first sustained long-form fiction; here described mid-composition as he struggles to keep his compact, sketch-like habits of writing from fragmenting the larger picture into a dry enumeration of impressions.
