А. Н. ПЛЕЩЕЕВУ, 5 февраля 1888 г. Москва.
Headnote
1 Written from Moscow on February 5, 1888, this short letter to the poet and editor Aleksey Pleshcheev opens with thanks for money sent on behalf of the ailing writer Putyata, then asks after the fate of "The Steppe," which Chekhov has just sent to "Severny Vestnik."
2 The middle of the letter turns to literary talk: warm, qualified praise for Vladimir Korolenko and Ivan Leontyev (Shcheglov), and a complaint that both writers confine themselves too narrowly to a single subject – convicts for one, junior officers for the other – along with a wish for better literary criticism. Chekhov then mentions Shrovtide plans, a theater benefit performance he expects to find exhausting, and closes with regards to Pleshcheev’s family.
