1 Written from Moscow on February 6, 1888, to A. L. Selivanova, a "fellow-countrywoman" Chekhov had met in the resort town of Slavyansk. The letter is a comic errand: his family has decided to summer near her, in or around Slavyansk, and he asks her to use her many local admirers and acquaintances – directors, inspectors, estate stewards – to scout out a cheap, shaded, waterside house or estate, while begging her to keep his means a secret from any prospective landlord.
2 The letter is otherwise playful and personal: mock indignation at being woken at four in the morning by her congratulatory telegram, a tongue-in-cheek plea that she not actually visit them in the south lest the household take to drink, and a warm, joking sign-off as her "humble summering husband."

Dearest fellow-countrywoman! Burdened as I am with a numerous family, I come to you with a most humble request. My family is determined, come what may, to spend this summer somewhere nearer to you – that is, in the south. At a family council we have chosen the town of Slavyansk as our residence for the coming summer.
Добрейшая землячка! Будучи обременен многочисленным семейством, обращаюсь к Вам с покорнейшей просьбой. Моя семья во что бы то ни стало хочет провести это лето поближе к Вам, то есть на юге. На семейном совете мы избрали для предстоящего лета своей резиденцией город Славянск.
I recall that you made quite an impression on me in Slavyansk (I wanted to throw myself under a train at the time). So you must know Slavyansk more or less well. Could you, by making inquiries among your acquaintances, your admirers and devotees (directors, inspectors, stewards, and the other great ones of this world who admire you), find out whether there is not, in Slavyansk or nearby, some lodging suitable for my family? We need a house or an estate, as cheap as possible, if possible with furniture, and it absolutely must be close to water and absolutely must have shade. My dear woman, if you would find out, sniff around, and ask about, you would make every summering husband a happy man. If there is no suitable lodging in Slavyansk itself, then I am willing to live nearby, but it absolutely must be in the shade and absolutely must be near a railway station. I shall not be stingy with money, but you must conceal from the whole world that I am a millionaire, and, if you are not averse to helping me, ask about such castles and villas as are, above all, inexpensive. I await your answer at the very earliest.
Мне помнится, что впечатление на меня Вы произвели в Славянске (я тогда хотел броситься под поезд). Стало быть, Вам Славянск более или менее известен. Не можете ли Вы путем расспросов Ваших знакомых, поклонников и почитателей (директоров, инспекторов, заведующих хозяйством и прочих великих мира сего) узнать, нет ли в Славянске или около подходящего для моей семьи помещения? Нам нужен дом или усадьба по возможности дешевле, по возможности с мебелью, непременно близко к воде, непременно с тенью. Голубушка, если бы Вы разузнали, поразнюхали и спросили, то Вы сделали бы счастливыми всех дачных мужей. Если нет подходящего помещения в Славянске, то я готов жить около, но непременно в тени и обязательно вблизи железнодорожной станции. На деньги скуп я не буду, но Вы скройте от всего мира, что я миллионер, и, если Вы не прочь помочь мне, узнавайте о таких замках и виллах, которые прежде всего недороги. Жду от Вас ответа в самом скором времени.
I received your congratulatory telegram at four o’clock in the morning. You villain! I was woken up, and, forgive the expression, had to hop barefoot across the cold floor to the table to sign for it. But in any case, I thank you warmly for remembering me, and I shake your hand firmly.

Really, you have so many admirers that it will be no trouble for you to find out whether we can have lodgings in Slavyansk or not. Four or five rooms will be enough for us.
Право, у Вас так много поклонников, что Вам нетрудно будет разузнать, можем ли мы иметь помещение в Славянске или нет. Для нас достаточно 4–5 комнат.
If we do live in the south, I hope you will not come to visit us, or else we shall drink ourselves into ruin. Spare us!

After you left – I mean, after you had gone – there was, for some three days, a feeling of emptiness in our house.
