1 A brief note written from Moscow on February 9, 1888, to Maria Vladimirovna Kiseleva – a friend and the mistress of the Babkino estate where Chekhov’s family had spent several summers. Chekhov sends greetings to her and her household and reports a piece of good financial news: he has just received a 500-ruble advance from the journal "Severny Vestnik." The closing lines are largely formulaic and end with a question about whether an earlier letter of his ever reached her.
My regards to you and to all your household, most esteemed Maria Vladimirovna! I have just received an advance of 500 rubles from "Severny Vestnik." Be well.
