Headnote

1 Written from Moscow on February 23, 1888, this letter opens with Chekhov fussing over reports that Pleshcheev is ill with bronchitis and worn down by Petersburg life, and urging him to take the cure that Korolenko and others have proposed: a restorative trip down the Volga. He then reports briefly on a two-hour visit to the playwright Alexander Ostrovsky, who is eagerly awaiting the proofs of "The Steppe."

2 The letter’s other main business is a favor for a third party: Chekhov forwards a manuscript by the little-known Moscow writer N. A. Khlopov, describing him as talented but timid, and asks Pleshcheev to consider placing his story in "Severny Vestnik" – or, failing that, to pass it along to Ivan Shcheglov for forwarding to Viktor Burenin at "Novoye Vremya." The letter closes on lighter notes: an invitation to come eat blini in Moscow, and a wry account of a disappointing production of "Othello" starring the actor Alexander Lensky.

What is wrong with you, dear Aleksey Nikolaevich? Is it true that you are ailing? Quod licet bovi, non licet Iovi... What is permitted to the ox is not permitted to Jove (Latin). What befits us whimpering, sickly literary men is quite unbecoming in you, broad-shouldered as you are... Yakov Polonsky writes to me that you have bronchitis and grow weak toward evening. No doubt you have caught cold, and, beyond question, you are worn out. You ought, for a month at least, to shed the Petersburg man in you, wave your hand at everything, and take flight. A trip on the Volga is a good, healthy notion. Fresh air, a change of scene, and the absence of a desk piled with ladies’ manuscripts will help you sooner and more surely than any of Dover’s powders. The trip would cost very little, cheaper than mushrooms; the food on the steamers is not at all bad; the damp and the fog there is no doing without them in early spring. will not get the better of us, since we shall be warmly dressed; and besides, you will always have a doctor at hand, a poor one perhaps, but free. Seriously, think it over and give yourself your word not to back out of the trip you have planned. Korolenko is certain you will go...
Quod licet bovi, non licet Iovi...
I called on Ostrovsky. He is waiting impatiently for the proofs of my "Steppe." I sat with him for some two hours, and, I am sorry to say, I grew talkative and did most of the talking myself, though for my part, you will agree, his conversation is far more useful to me than my own...
The enclosed manuscript is the work of the Moscow writer N. A. Khlopov, the author of several plays ("In the Bosom of Nature" and others). This Khlopov is a talented, decent, and timid little man, hemmed in by the ice of Moscow’s indifference. He is burning to break through, and he has asked me to put in a word for him in Petersburg. Might you find it possible to place his little story in "Severny Vestnik"? The story is short, unpretentious, and written with a fair share of talent. The handwriting is dreadful, unpleasant to read, but that is no great matter. Should you find the story unsuited to "S. V.," then be so good, when you next see him, as to hand it to Shcheglov, so that he in turn may pass it on to Burenin at "Novoye Vremya," with a request from me that it not be tossed into the wastebasket but actually read...
I await the very best news of your health. Get well, and come to Moscow to eat blini.
Yesterday I watched Lensky play Othello. The ticket cost 6 rubles 20 kopecks, but the acting was not worth even a ruble. The staging was good, the playing conscientious, but the main thing was missing – jealousy.
Keep well.
