1 (The tale of a hunter who never hits his mark)
2 It was four o’clock in the morning...
3 The steppe was bathed in the gold of the first sunbeams and, wet with dew, sparkled as if strewn with diamond dust. The fog had been driven off by the morning wind and stood beyond the river now like a wall of lead. The
rye ears, the heads of burdock and wild rose, stood quiet, still, only now and then bowing to one another and whispering. Above the grass and above our heads, gliding smoothly on their wings, hung kites, hobby-falcons, and owls. They were hunting...
4 Akim Petrovich Otletaev,
justice of the peace,
district doctor, myself, Otletaev’s son-in-law
Predpolozhensky, and the
district elder Kozoedov were all six of us riding out to the hunt in Otletaev’s open carriage. Behind the carriage, tongues lolling, ran four dogs. The district doctor and I are skinny sorts, the rest of them fat as hundred-bucket barrels, so that though the ancestral carriage was both wide and deep, we were packed in devilishly tight. I kept jabbing Kozoedov in the stomach with my elbow and my gun-butt. We all jostled, puffed, scowled, hated one another with our whole souls, and waited impatiently for the moment we could climb out of the carriage. We were driving further into the steppe to shoot partridge, little bustard, quail, marsh game, and, should fortune glance our way, great bustard. Otletaev, owner of the carriage and the horses, led us – it was by his grace that we were going hunting at all. Our bodies were crushed, but our souls were filled with joys of the very highest order!
5 Whoever has never gone hunting, never tramped off after game, cannot understand these joys. We held our guns and looked at them as fondly as mothers look at sons who show great promise.
6 "And what’s our route to be?" I asked, once we had driven some ten
versts from
Otletaevka.
7 "We’re off to
Yelanchik now," answered Otletaev, "to shoot
snipe... It’s about eight versts from here. We’ll take a shot at the quail in the millet too... Once we’ve had our fill of quail we’ll camp for the night, and by first light tomorrow the real shooting will begin..."
8 "Well, gentlemen, what do you think," I asked, pointing a finger at a kite bathing far off in the blue of the sky, "can one hit it from here? Would you hit it?"
9 "You wouldn’t!" said Otletaev. "Too far! Though from my gun – you’d hit it..."
10 "Not even from your gun would you hit it," observed Predpolozhensky.
11 "You’d hit it. Not with shot – it wouldn’t carry – but with a bullet, for certain..."
12 "Not even with a bullet."
13 "Now permit me to know whether I’d hit it or not! You don’t know my gun, but I do... You’ve never in your life seen a good gun, that’s why this seems so strange to you... I’ve hit things farther off than that..."
14 Predpolozhensky tipped his head back and burst out laughing...
15 "What are you laughing at?" Otletaev went on. "Don’t believe me, I suppose?"
16 "Of course I don’t believe you."
17 "Hm... So you don’t know my gun... A remarkable gun! Six hundred silver roubles it cost, and not for nothing..."
18 "How mu...ch??" asked Predpolozhensky, craning his neck... "How much? Say it again,
Papasha!"
19 "Six hundred roubles... What are you laughing at? Take a look at the gun first, and then bare your teeth!"
20 "I see it... Whose make?"
21 "Marseilles... Lepellier’s factory..."
22 "Lepellier? Never heard of any such factory... A gun’s a gun... It’s worth a hundred roubles, maybe... I don’t like it, Father-in-law, when you lie! Why lie? I don’t understand – why lie?"
23 "It’s a good gun," observed the
justice of the peace, "but it isn’t worth six hundred. You overpaid, Akim Petrovich!"
24 "He didn’t overpay at all!" Predpolozhensky flared up. "He’s lying! Lying like a schoolboy!"
25 Otletaev fidgeted and turned red.
26 "Not the sort to lie," he said. "So there! And you – you’re the one who lies! Yes! You’re always looking to needle somebody. One oughtn’t to travel with you. I don’t know why I ever agreed to bring you!.."
27 "And you shouldn’t have... Why lie, I don’t understand! He lies like a pig!"
28 "You’re the pig yourself! A pig and a fool both..."
29 We began trying to talk Predpolozhensky round.
30 "Let him not lie, then!" the unyielding son-in-law defended himself. "My soul rebels when someone lies... And let him not call me pig, either. He’s the pig, that’s what! And if it displeases him that I’ve come along, then...
the devil take him! I can just as well not come!"
31 "Now, enough! Akim Petrovich never meant to insult you! Is it worth stirring up a storm over trifles?"
32 Predpolozhensky puffed up like an overfed turkey and fell silent.
33 "That won’t do, sir!" Kozoedov addressed Predpolozhensky after a little while. "That won’t do, sir! He’s, one might say, in place of a father to you now, your father-in-law, and here you go being rude to him... A sin, that is!"
34 The son-in-law glanced contemptuously at
the elder and gave a sardonic little smirk...
35 "Is anyone asking you?" he said. "Asking, are they? Hold your tongue, when... Sit, if you’re sitting!.. In place of a father... You can’t even talk right yet, and still you climb in... Hm... Homespun snout... Yokel!"
36 "There now, see what you’re like! You don’t care for it when folk sit quietly. I may have come up from simple stock, I may say, and never gone through any education, but I can say that I carry all manner of feelings in my breast, and in my heart, and in my soul, while you, for all your years of schooling, have none of that... So there!"
37 "Enough, gentlemen!" I broke in. "Enough preaching morals at one another! Let’s have some quiet..."
38 Otletaev, snuffling, hauled a bulky, badly worn cigar-case out of his side pocket and thrust his fat fingers into it. The doctor and the justice of the peace both reached out their hands toward his cigar-case.
39 "No, sir, excuse me, sir!" said Otletaev with feeling. "Friendship is friendship, but tobacco’s a thing apart. I won’t have enough for myself as it is... It’s a long road, and I’ve only got some four dozen cigarettes on me..."
40 The doctor and the justice of the peace were badly embarrassed, and, to hide their confusion from the light of day, took to whistling something from
Madame Angot.
41 Otletaev was stupid as forty thousand brothers put together, and a terrible boor besides...
42 We could none of us stand him. The embarrassed doctor lit a cigarette of his own and began telling stories. He told some twenty of them; of these only one was not smutty, the rest simply melted away in our ears.
43 "Well, my good fellow, you’re quite the wit!" I praised the doctor. "I didn’t know you were such a humorist!"
44 "Ah, yes... We know a thing or two," said the doctor. "If I cared to write for the magazines, I’d have millions. I’d earn more than the lot of you."
45 "I don’t doubt it... Why don’t you write for them, then?"
46 "I don’t want to!"
47 "Why not?"
48 "I don’t want to, that’s all! I have a conscience! Is it likely a man with a conscience could write in your magazines? Never! I don’t even read the papers, ever! I consider anyone who subscribes to them, wastes his money on them, a fool..."
49 "And I think the opposite," observed the justice of the peace, "I consider anyone who doesn’t spend money on the papers a fool..."
50 "The doctor’s out of sorts today," I said. "Let’s not provoke him..."
51 "Who told you I’m out of sorts? I’m in fine spirits... You stand up for the papers because you write in them, but to my mind they’re... pah! Not worth a rotten egg. They lie, lie, and lie. The champion liars and gossips! The newspapermen are the same as the lawyers... They lie and have no conscience!"
52 "I was a lawyer myself," said the justice of the peace, "and I had a conscience."
53 Predpolozhensky and Kozoedov exchanged glances and smirked slyly.
54 "I don’t mean you... I mean in general... In general they’re all crooks... Newspapermen, lawyers, all of them..."
55 I, instead of keeping quiet, went on defending the newspapermen. The justice of the peace went on defending the lawyers... A quarrel rose up in the carriage.
56 "And what of your medicine, eh?" I seized on. "Medicine? What’s that worth? No lying there, I suppose? Only taking the money! What is a doctor? A doctor is a preface to the gravedigger... that’s what, sir! Though I don’t know why I’m arguing with you at all – do you even have logic? You finished the university, but you argue like a bathhouse attendant..."
57 "Speak calmly, if you please! One may manage, I believe, without insults!"
58 "We go abusing the newspapermen and the lawyers," Predpolozhensky broke in with a bass rumble, "and don’t see the biggest liar of all right under our noses... Have a chat with our dear father-in-law here, he’d out-lie any lawyer at the trade..."
59 And so it went on... Word after word, grimace after grimace, gossip after gossip, and the whole thing went to the devil knows where...
60 We began recounting everything that had built up in our souls against one another over the winter. We outdid old maids at it.
61 Meanwhile, while we, unslept and half-drunk, needled one another, the sun climbed higher and higher... The fog had vanished completely, and a summer day had begun... All around was quiet, fine...
62 Only we alone disturbed the stillness...
63 Driving up to the first little marsh we came across, we climbed out of the carriage and, cross and sulking, wandered off in different directions. Kozoedov undertook to restore harmony among us. He tossed a three-
kopeck coin high in the air, fired at it, and hit it. We all gathered round, picked up the coin, counted the pellet-marks on it, and somehow got to talking again.
64 Predpolozhensky flushed a corncrake and killed it. We congratulated him and gave a cheer. Harmony would have been fully restored had it not been for the doctor. The doctor, while we were congratulating Predpolozhensky on his first success, went over to the carriage, untied a bundle, and set about treating himself to vodka and a snack.
65 "Doctor! What are you doing there?" cried Otletaev.
66 "Eating and drinking."
67 "What right have you to help yourself?"
68 "What of it?"
69 "Was that laid in for you? I don’t understand this, forgive me, this piggishness! Couldn’t wait! What’s this you’ve uncorked? Good heavens! That’s my cordial! What right have you, my dear sir?"
70 "Don’t shout, if you please! Quietly now!"
71 "But I took that cordial for myself! I’m weak in health, I took the cordial, and... there you are! Uncorked! Asked for it, he did! Wrap up that salmon!"
72 "I won’t wrap it up! You should know, you rude and tactless man, that on a hunt everything’s held in common... What a boor you are, if you’ll forgive me!"
73 The doctor drank off a glass of the cordial and, to spite Otletaev, cut himself an enormous slice of the salmon. Predpolozhensky darted to the carriage and, to vex his father-in-law, drank half the cordial straight from the bottle... Tears started up in Otletaev’s eyes.
74 "You mean this out of spite?" he whispered. "Very well then! Fine! So that’s how you are... Merci beaucoup. Much obliged (French: merci beaucoup)."
75 The justice of the peace, who had not known what the matter was, came up to the carriage.
76 "A-a-ah?.. Having a snack?" he asked. "Isn’t it a bit early? Though a single glass never hurts... To your health!"
77 The justice of the peace poured himself a glass of the cordial and drank it.
78 "Very fine, sir! Excellent, sir!" Otletaev now cried out.
79 "What’s excellent?" asked the justice of the peace.
80 "Nothing..."
81 Otletaev got back into the carriage, tossed the bundle onto the grass, bowed to us ironically, and struck
the coachman Pyotr on the back.
82 "Drive on!" he shouted.
83 "Where are you off to?" we cried, astonished...
84 "Seeing as I’m repulsive to you... uneducated... Kozoedov! Come, get in, dear fellow! What business have we peasants hunting with learned gentlemen? Let’s free them of our company! Come, my friend!"
85 "Where are you going, though? What’s this foolishness you’re playing at?"
86 "If I’m a fool, why should it trouble you?.. Let it be! A fool is just what I am... Farewell, sir... I’m off home..."
87 "And what are we to drive off in, then?"
88 "In whatever you like... The carriage is mine."
89 "Have you gone and
eaten henbane, Father-in-law, or what?" cried Predpolozhensky.
90 Kozoedov sat down beside Otletaev and meekly took off his hat.
91 "Have you lost your mind?" Predpolozhensky went on. "Get out of the carriage!"
92 "I won’t get out. Farewell, son-in-law! You’re an educated man, a humane man, a civilized man... And I... what am I?"
93 "You’re a fool! Gentlemen, what is the meaning of this? Who set him off? Was it you, Doctor? You’re forever poking your learned nose where it isn’t wanted, damn you!"
94 "I’m no father-in-law of yours... Kindly don’t shout," the doctor took offense. "If you’re going to shout, I’ll leave too..."
95 "Go on and leave, then! A great loss that would be! Fancy that!"
96 The doctor shrugged, sighed, and climbed back into the carriage. The justice of the peace waved his hand and climbed in too.
97 "It’s always this way with us," he sighed. "Nothing ever comes of anything with us..."
98 "Drive on!" cried Otletaev.
99 Pyotr smacked his lips, tugged the reins, and the carriage started off.
100 Predpolozhensky and I exchanged glances.
101 "Stop!" I shouted, and ran after the carriage. "Stop!"
102 "Stop!" bellowed Predpolozhensky. "Stop, you brutes!"
103 The carriage halted, and we climbed in.
104 "I’ll remember all this against you!" said Predpolozhensky, eyes flashing, and shook his fist at his father-in-law. "All of it! You’ll remember this day till you die!"
105 We drove the whole way home in silence. In our souls the joys of the highest order had given way to the foulest feelings. We were ready to devour one another and did not devour one another only because none of us knew which end to start eating from... When we drove up to the Otletaev house,
Madame Otletaeva was sitting on the terrace drinking coffee...
106 "You’re back already?" she said in surprise. "Why so early?"
107 We climbed out of the carriage and made for the gate in silence.
108 "Where are you off to, gentlemen?" cried Madame Otletaeva. "What about coffee? What about dinner? Where are you going?"
109 We turned toward the porch and, silent, with feeling, shook our enormous fists at it. Predpolozhensky spat in the direction of the porch, swore, and went off to sleep in the stable.
110 Two days later Otletaev, Predpolozhensky, Kozoedov, the justice of the peace,
the district doctor, and I were sitting in Otletaev’s house playing
stukolka. We played stukolka and, as usual, snapped at one another...
111 Three days later we quarreled to the death, and five days after that we set off fireworks together...
112 We quarrel, we gossip, we hate, we despise one another, but we cannot part ways. Do not be surprised, reader, and do not laugh! Go to Otletaevka, live out a winter and a summer there, and you will learn what it is all about...
113 A backwater is no capital... In Otletaevka a crayfish is a fish, a fool is a wise man, and a quarrel is a living word...
