To G. M. Chekhov, 17 October 1887. Moscow.

Headnote

1 This entry preserves two consecutive letters as segmented from the source edition: one to Georgy Mitrofanovich Chekhov, a cousin in Taganrog, written 17 October 1887, and one to the publisher Nikolai Alexandrovich Leikin, written two days later. By this point Chekhov, twenty-seven, was an established, well-paid professional writer in Moscow, supporting his whole family and revelling – half in earnest, half in self-mockery – in his own commercial success. Both letters date from the weeks just before the premiere of his first full-length play, "Ivanov."

2 The Georgy letter is full of Chekhov’s family news and running jokes: he reports, in mock-journalistic third person, that "An. P. Chekhov" (i.e. himself) has written a new four-act comedy called "Ivanov" – a joke at his own expense about being talked of as if he were someone else’s news item. He tallies his earnings from stories, a play sale, and a travel sketch of the Holy Mountains and the steppe, sends his photograph to two cousins who had threatened to beat him up, and asks after family health and a mislaid book. The letter to Leikin, his longtime editor at the humor magazine "Oskolki," is brisker and more businesslike: a new story dispatched, news of the play (destined for Korsh’s theatre), a funeral to attend, and a gossip round-up of mutual acquaintances in the Moscow press.

Many thanks, dear brother, for not forgetting me and not scolding me for my long silence. Why I write rarely you can understand if you picture me in my study. I write all day long, and have written myself into such a state that it’s become disgusting to hold a pen in my hand. I’ve long meant to answer your last letter, but have been badly pressed for time of late. Here’s the proof of it:
By An. P. Chekhov, as we hear, a comedy in four acts has been written, under the title "Ivanov." The subject of the play is new. Its first staging is expected to take place in Moscow.
Besides that, I’ve had a great deal of urgent work and business correspondence. The only time I rest is when I go out to see patients. I’m never at the theatre or out visiting, so that Mama and Aunt F. have nicknamed me "grandfather" for my stay-at-home ways. I’m waiting for summer, when I’ll again start travelling about the wide world and resting.
Nothing new with us. We’re living well, want for nothing, and everyone is healthy. Your Uncle P. E. is aging fast, but is as cheerful as ever. Every year he grows gentler and kinder. He lives with Vanya in his official quarters, where he has a room of his own set aside for him; he spends his days and takes supper at my place.
My latest little book, published by Suvorin, is selling superbly. I can boast that my trade is going far better than Loboda’s. I, brother, have become a merchant. I sell articles, plays, books, and medical advice. For the play I’ll get no less than a thousand roubles; the other day I sold a publisher a dozen and a half worthless old stories, already once in print, for 150 roubles – sold for a single edition. And so on. In a word, trade is booming.
Go on writing to me at this address: "Kudrinskaya-Sadovaya, Korneyev’s house." Write and tell me:
1) What’s new?
2) How is the health of my aunt and uncle? How’s the ear?
Let Sanya and Pecheritsa not think I’ve forgotten them. I remember very well how they meant to give me a beating last summer. I’m sending them both my photograph, which you’ll be so good as to hand over to them.
Send me Anisim Vasilyich’s address.
Did I not leave a book at your place: "In the Land of the Mantilla and the Castanets," by Bezhetsky? If I did, send it on to me when you get the chance. I lost quite a few books on the road.
Tell Papa that I’d be very glad to get a letter from him. I value his friendship. Give everyone my very best regards, keep well, work, study, take walks, and don’t forget me.
In the "Novoye Vremya" I described the Holy Mountains. A young man, a nephew of one of the bishops, told me that he’d seen three bishops reading that piece: one read aloud while the other two listened. They liked it. So it seems it was liked in the Holy Mountains too. Thanks to the Holy Mountains I earned a hundred roubles. I also wrote a description of the steppe. That description was liked by a great many people, especially in Petersburg. Farewell. I await your letter.
Your A. Chekhov.
As for Father Bandakov’s homilies, I’ll inquire of Suvorin when I’m in Petersburg, and answer Uncle at once.
Tell Mama I haven’t forgotten about the seeds. I’ll send them, but on condition that Sanya takes up the little garden properly, by all the rules of the art. Flowers can be sown with you not only in the front garden but also along the fence.

My kindest Nikolai Alexandrovich! I am sending you a story, and along with it am dropping into the postbox an open letter announcing its birth... In the past week I have been in good health, felt no low spirits, and worked; I have written to Khudekov, to Suvorin, and to you. If my health holds up in the same way through next week, I’ll send a story for the following issue as well.
Why do you not write to me? I sent you a note addressed to "Dvoryanskaya 14" and got no answer (though, true, there was no question in the letter).
I have written a play in four acts. If we agree on the price, it will be staged at Korsh’s theatre.
I am going to the Novodevichy Convent to bury Gilyarov-Platonov.
Yezhov left Moscow not long ago for Bratslav. He used to call on me often. A very good fellow, and far from resembling the notion we’re accustomed to have of newspapermen. I still haven’t managed to visit Palmin even once. I’m afraid that by the time I get out to him by cab, he’ll have moved lodgings. Why is Agafopod not working for you? Judging by his letters, in which he says little about his work in general, he’s living on his salary alone. Strange that, knowing how to write, he doesn’t write.
The weather here is mixed, that is, one day fine, the next foul.
Is there any news in the literary world?
Before Christmas I’ll put out advertisements for "Motley Stories," but my book is nowhere to be found in Moscow. It’s only to be had at Salayev’s and Stupin’s – shops that people go to only for schoolbooks. Salayev is not popular in Moscow. No one will go to him for belles-lettres.
You will certainly get "In the Twilight." Forgive my ignorance, which is no fault of mine.
Give my regards to all your family, and keep well.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
