Anna Akimovna's aunt, a very stout, warm-hearted woman who presides over the household's lower, "trade" or "woman's" half, once dressed as a plain peasant woman under her brothers' strict old-fashioned rule before Anna Akimovna's generation loosened the household. She forgives the drunken, dismissed coachman Panteley on Christmas morning, drinks and jokes freely with the factory staff, and in the evening presides over the servants' supper and card game, vocally opposing any thought of Anna Akimovna marrying a merchant (though not a plain workman) and recalling, in an unguarded moment, her own youthful love for a factory man before her brothers forced her into a marriage with a widowed icon-painter.

The house's literal division into an upstairs "genteel" half (where the educated and well-born are received) and a downstairs "trade" or "woman's" half (where Aunt Tatyana Ivanovna holds sway among plainer folk and her own acquaintances) is the story's namesake image -- "babe carstvo," a woman's kingdom -- and Anna Akimovna's repeated movement between the two floors across the day enacts her larger inability to settle into either the workaday world she was born to or the genteel one she has inherited.
