The Proposal

Headnote

1 "The Proposal" ("Предложение"), subtitled "a joke in one act," is one of Chekhov’s most popular and frequently staged short comedies. He wrote it in the spring of 1888 for the actress and playwright Mariya Abramova’s theater, though its first documented public performance was provincial, in Nizhny Novgorod that August; it opened in Moscow that autumn and in St. Petersburg (at the Alexandrinsky Theatre) in April 1889, quickly becoming a staple of amateur and professional stages alike – Chekhov himself later grumbled, half-proud and half-weary, that it was being performed "everywhere," including at the Tsar’s own court. The plot is minimal: the chronically anxious landowner Ivan Vasilyevich Lomov calls on his neighbor Stepan Stepanovich Chubukov to ask for the hand of his twenty-five-year-old daughter, Natalya Stepanovna – and the proposal itself is repeatedly derailed by escalating, farcical quarrels, first over the ownership of a strip of land called the Ox Meadows, then over whose hunting dog is better.

2 The comedy runs on pure momentum: three characters who cannot stop interrupting, contradicting, and topping one another, building each dispute to a pitch of shouted absurdity before collapsing it into the next. Lomov’s hypochondria – his constant heart palpitations, numbed legs, sparks before the eyes, and swings between fainting and dying – turns him into a comic engine that runs almost independently of the plot, undercutting the seriousness of an occasion (a marriage proposal) that ought to call for exactly the composure he cannot muster. The play’s tightly recurring rhythms – object of dispute, rising volume, wounding personal insults, physical collapse, sudden reconciliation, and a fresh dispute erupting from the ashes of the last – give it the shape of a mechanism as much as a story, and its ending (the couple betrothed and immediately squabbling again over the dogs) refuses any sentimental resolution.

3 Contains period-typical language and insults exchanged in anger by the characters, including class-inflected slurs ("gypsies," used dismissively by Natalya Stepanovna to characterize being treated unfairly) and personal/family insults (accusations of drunkenness, insanity, infidelity, and physical mockery, including of a grandmother’s appearance) that are part of the farce’s escalating verbal violence and are not authorial endorsements. Retained as written, consistent with Hermitsh Press’s practice of translating faithfully rather than softening period text.

. My dear fellow, who do I see! Ivan Vasilyevich! Delighted!
(Shakes his hand.)
Well, this is quite a surprise, my dear... How are you keeping?
. Thank you. And how are you keeping?
. We get by, little by little, my angel, thanks to your prayers and so on. Sit down, I beg you... Really, it isn’t good for neighbors to forget each other, my dear fellow. My dear boy, but why so formal? Tailcoat, gloves, and all the rest. Are you off somewhere, my precious?
. No, I’ve only come to you, respected Stepan Stepanych.
. Then why the tailcoat, my treasure? As if paying a New Year’s call!
. You see, here’s the thing.
(Takes his arm.)
I have come to you, respected Stepan Stepanych, to trouble you with a single request. More than once already I have had the honor of turning to you for help, and always you have, so to speak... but forgive me, I am agitated. I will have some water, respected Stepan Stepanych.

(To him.)
What’s the matter, my handsome fellow?
. You see, respected Stepanych... forgive me, Stepan Respectedych... that is, I am terribly agitated, as you can see... In a word, you alone can help me, though of course I have done nothing to deserve it, and... and have no right to count on your help...
. Ah, don’t spin it out, my dear fellow! Speak plainly! Well?
. This instant... This very minute. The fact is, I have come to ask for the hand of your daughter, Natalya Stepanovna.
(joyfully)
. My dear soul! Ivan Vasilyevich! Say it again — I didn’t quite catch it!
. I have the honor of asking...
(interrupting)
. My dear boy... I am so glad, and so on... Just so, and all the rest of it.
(Embraces and kisses him.)
I have long wished for this. It has always been my dearest wish.
(Sheds a tear.)
And I have always loved you, my angel, as my own son. God grant you both counsel and love, and so forth, for I have greatly desired it... Why am I standing here like a blockhead? Struck dumb with joy, quite dumbstruck! Oh, from the bottom of my heart... I’ll go and call Natasha, and all that.
(touched)
. Respected Stepan Stepanych, what do you think, may I count on her consent?
. Such a handsome fellow as you, and... and she should refuse! In love with you, no doubt, like a cat, and so on... One moment!
(Goes out.)

. It’s cold... I’m shaking all over, as before an examination. The main thing is to make up my mind. If a man thinks too long, hesitates, talks it over endlessly, and waits for an ideal or for real love, he’ll never get married at all... Brr!.. Cold! Natalya Stepanovna is an excellent housekeeper, not bad-looking, well educated... what more could I want? Only now, from the agitation, a ringing has started up in my ears.
(Drinks water.)
And yet I cannot not marry... In the first place, I’m already 35 — a critical age, so to speak. In the second place, I need a regular, orderly life... I have a weak heart, constant palpitations, I am quick-tempered and always terribly agitated... Even now my lips are trembling and a little muscle is jumping under my right eyelid... But the most dreadful thing of all with me is my sleep. No sooner do I lie down in bed and just begin to doze off, than suddenly something in my left side gives a wrench! and strikes straight into the shoulder and the head... I leap up like a madman, walk about a little, and lie down again, but no sooner do I begin to doze off than again in my side — a wrench! And so it goes, twenty times over...

. Well, I never, upon my word! It’s you, and Papa says: go along, there’s a merchant come for the goods. How do you do, Ivan Vasilyevich!
. How do you do, respected Natalya Stepanovna!
. Excuse me, I’m in my apron and déshabillé... We’re shelling peas for drying. Why haven’t you been to see us for so long? Sit down...
Would you like some breakfast?
. No, thank you, I’ve already eaten.
. Do smoke... Here are matches... The weather is glorious, and yesterday it rained so hard the workmen did nothing all day. How many stacks have you got in? I, imagine, was greedy and mowed the whole meadow, and now I’m not glad of it myself — I’m afraid my hay will rot. I ought to have waited. But what’s this? You’re in a tailcoat, it seems! What news is this! Are you off to a ball, or what? By the way, you’ve grown handsomer... Really, why have you turned yourself out so smartly?
(agitated)
. You see, respected Natalya Stepanovna... The fact is, I have made up my mind to ask you to hear me out... Of course you’ll be surprised, and even angry, but I...
(Aside.)
Terribly cold!
. What is it?
Well?
. I shall try to be brief. You are aware, respected Natalya Stepanovna, that I have long had the honor of knowing your family, ever since childhood. My late aunt and her husband, from whom, as you are good enough to know, I inherited my land, always held your father and your late mother in the deepest respect. The Lomov family and the Chubukov family have always stood on the most friendly, one might even say kindred, terms. Moreover, as you are good enough to know, my land lies close beside yours. If you will be so good as to recall, my Ox Meadows border on your birch wood.
. Forgive me, I’ll interrupt you. You say "my Ox Meadows"... But surely they’re not yours?
. Mine, madam...
. Well, I never! The Ox Meadows are ours, not yours!
. No, madam, mine, respected Natalya Stepanovna.
. That’s news to me. How can they be yours?
. How can they be? I’m speaking of those Ox Meadows that run in a wedge between your birch wood and Burnt Marsh.
. Well, yes, yes... They’re ours...
. No, you are mistaken, respected Natalya Stepanovna — they are mine.
. Come to your senses, Ivan Vasilyevich! Since when have they been yours?
. Since when? As far back as I can remember, they have always been ours.
. Well now, really, forgive me!
. It’s plain from the deeds, respected Natalya Stepanovna. The Ox Meadows were once in dispute, that’s true; but nowadays everyone knows they are mine. There’s nothing to argue about. You see, my aunt’s grandmother gave those Meadows for indefinite and free use to the peasants of your father’s grandfather, in return for their firing bricks for her. The peasants of your father’s grandfather made free use of the Meadows for some forty years and grew accustomed to considering them as good as their own, and then, when the Emancipation came in...
. It’s not at all as you tell it! Both my grandfather and my great-grandfather held that their land ran as far as Burnt Marsh — which means the Ox Meadows were ours. What is there to argue about? I don’t understand. It’s really vexing!
. I’ll show you the deeds, Natalya Stepanovna!
. No, you’re simply joking, or teasing me... What a surprise! We’ve held this land for nearly three hundred years, and suddenly we’re told it isn’t ours! Ivan Vasilyevich, forgive me, but I can hardly believe my own ears... These Meadows mean nothing to me. There’s only five desyatinas in all, and they’re worth some three hundred rubles, but it’s the injustice of it that outrages me. Say what you like, but I cannot abide injustice.
. Hear me out, I implore you! The peasants of your father’s grandfather, as I already had the honor of telling you, fired bricks for my aunt’s grandmother. My aunt’s grandmother, wishing to do them a kindness...
. Grandfather, grandmother, aunt... I understand nothing of it! The Meadows are ours, and that’s all.
. Mine, madam!
. Ours! Argue for two days if you like, put on fifteen tailcoats if you like, but they are ours, ours, ours!.. I don’t want what’s yours, and I have no wish to lose what’s mine... As you please!
. I have no need of the Meadows myself, Natalya Stepanovna, it’s a matter of principle. If you like, I’m quite willing to make you a present of them.
. I can make you a present of them myself, they’re mine!.. All this is, to say the least, strange, Ivan Vasilyevich! Until now we’ve thought of you as a good neighbor, a friend — last year we lent you our threshing machine, and on account of it we had to finish threshing our own grain as late as November — and here you are treating us like gypsies. Making me a present of my own land. Excuse me, that’s not neighborly! To my mind it’s downright insolence, if you want to know...
. So according to you I’m a usurper? Madam, I have never in my life seized another man’s land, and I will not allow anyone to accuse me of it...
(Goes quickly to the carafe and drinks water.)
The Ox Meadows are mine!
. That’s not true, they’re ours!
. Mine!
. Not true! I’ll prove it to you! This very day I’ll send my mowers out to those Meadows!
. What did you say?
. This very day my mowers will be there!
. And I’ll drive them off by the scruff of the neck!
. You wouldn’t dare!
(clutches at his heart)
. The Ox Meadows are mine! Do you understand? Mine!
. Kindly don’t shout! You may shout and wheeze with rage all you like in your own house, but here I must ask you to keep within bounds!
. If it were not, madam, for this dreadful, agonizing palpitation of the heart, if the veins were not throbbing in my temples, I should speak to you quite differently!
(Shouts.)

. What is it? What are you shouting about?
. Papa, please explain to this gentleman whose the Ox Meadows are: ours or his?
(to him)
. My chickabiddy, the Meadows are ours!
. But for pity’s sake, Stepan Stepanych, how are they yours? Do at least try to be a reasonable man! My aunt’s grandmother gave the Meadows for the temporary, free use of your grandfather’s peasants. The peasants made use of the land for forty years and grew used to it as if it were their own, and then, when the Emancipation came in...
. If I may, my precious fellow... You are forgetting that it was precisely because the peasants did not pay your grandmother anything, and so on, that the Meadows were then in dispute, and all that... But nowadays every dog knows, mark you, that they are ours. You’ve evidently never seen the survey map!
. And I’ll prove to you that they are mine!
. You won’t prove it, my dear fellow.
. No, I will!
. My dear boy, what’s the use of shouting like that? You’ll prove nothing by shouting, mark you. I don’t want what’s yours, and I have no intention of giving up what’s mine. What would be the point? And since it’s come to this, my dear sir, if you mean to go on disputing the Meadows and so forth, I’d sooner make a present of them to the peasants than to you. So there!
. I don’t understand! What right have you to give away another man’s property?
. Kindly allow me to know whether I have the right or not. Mark you, young man, I am not accustomed to being spoken to in that tone, and so forth. I, young man, am twice your age, and I ask you to speak to me without such agitation, and all the rest of it.
. No, you simply take me for a fool and are laughing at me! You call my own land yours, and on top of that you expect me to keep cool and speak to you like a civilized man! That’s not how good neighbors behave, Stepan Stepanych! You’re not a neighbor, you’re a usurper!
. What did you say? What was that you said?
. Papa, send the mowers out to the Meadows this instant!
(To Lomov.)
. What did you say, my good sir?
. The Ox Meadows are ours, and I will not give way, not give way, not give way!
. We shall see about that! I’ll prove to you in court that they’re mine!
. In court? By all means take it to court, my good sir, and so on! By all means! I know you, you’ve only, mark you, been waiting for the chance to go to law, and so forth... A pettifogging nature! Your whole family was litigious! Every one of them!
. I ask you not to insult my family! In the Lomov family every one was honest, and there was not a single one of them who ever stood trial for embezzlement, unlike your uncle!
. And in your Lomov family every one of them was insane!
. All of them, all, all!
. And your mother was a hunchback.
(Clutches at his heart.)
Something wrenched in my side... A blow to the head... Good heavens!.. Water!
. And your father was a gambler and a glutton!
. And your aunt was a gossip such as few are!
. My left leg’s gone numb... And you’re an intriguer... Oh, my heart!.. And it’s no secret to anyone that before the elections you went and... Sparks before my eyes... Where’s my hat?
. Base! Dishonest! Vile!
. And you yourself, mark you, are a spiteful, two-faced, treacherous person! Yes, indeed!
. There it is, my hat... My heart... Which way is out? Where’s the door? Oh!.. I believe I’m dying... My leg’s giving way under me...

. To me? A proposal? Ah!
(Falls into an armchair and moans.)
Bring him back! Bring him back! Ah! Bring him back!
. Bring whom back?
. Quick, quick! I feel faint! Bring him back!
(Hysterics.)
. What is it? What’s the matter with you?
(Clutches his head.)
Unhappy man that I am! I’ll shoot myself! I’ll hang myself! They’ve tormented me to death!
. I’m dying! Bring him back!
. Bah! At once. Don’t cry!
(Runs out.)
(alone, moans)
. What have we done! Bring him back! Bring him back!
(runs in)
. He’s coming this instant, and so on, devil take him! Ugh! You talk to him yourself, for I, mark you, have no wish to...
(moans)
. Bring him back!
(shouts)
. He’s coming, I tell you. Oh, what a business it is, Creator, to be the father of a grown-up daughter! I’ll cut my throat! I certainly will cut my throat! We scolded the man, put him to shame, drove him out — and it’s all your doing... yours!
. No, yours!
. So it’s my fault now, is it, mark you!
Well, talk to him yourself, then!
(Goes out.)

(enters, exhausted)
. Such a dreadful palpitation... My leg’s gone numb... a wrenching in my side...
. Forgive us, we lost our tempers, Ivan Vasilyevich... I recall it now: the Ox Meadows are indeed yours.
. My heart’s beating so terribly... My Meadows... Little muscles jumping in both my eyes...
. Yours, yours, the Meadows... Do sit down...
We were in the wrong...
. I did it purely on principle... The land means nothing to me, but the principle means a great deal...
. Just so, the principle... Let’s talk of something else.
. All the more so as I have the proof. My aunt’s grandmother gave to the peasants of your father’s grandfather...
. Enough, enough of that...
(Aside.)
I don’t know how to begin...
(To him.)
Are you going hunting soon?
. For blackcock, respected Natalya Stepanovna, I think I’ll start after the harvest. Ah, have you heard? Imagine, what a misfortune has come upon me! My Guesser, whom you are good enough to know, has gone lame.
. What a pity! From what?
. I don’t know... He must have sprained something, or the other dogs bit him...
(Sighs.)
The very best dog I ever had, to say nothing of the money! I paid Mironov a hundred and twenty-five rubles for him, you know.
. That was too much to pay, Ivan Vasilyevich!
. To my mind it’s very cheap. A magnificent dog.
. Snapper better than Guesser? What are you saying!
(Laughs.)
Snapper better than Guesser!
. Of course he’s better! Snapper is young, it’s true, not fully trained yet, but for build and for gait there’s not his equal even at Volchanetsky’s.
. Permit me, Natalya Stepanovna, but you’re forgetting that he’s undershot, and an undershot dog is never a good hunter!
. Undershot? First I’ve ever heard of it!
. I assure you, his lower jaw is shorter than his upper.
. And you measured it, did you?
. I did. He’ll do well enough for a chase, of course, but if it comes to seizing the quarry, hardly...
. In the first place, our Snapper is pure-bred, thick-coated, he’s the son of Harness and Chisel, while as for your dun-and-piebald there’s no making out his pedigree at all... Besides he’s old and ugly as a hack...
. Old he may be, but I wouldn’t take five of your Snappers for him! How could I? Guesser is a real dog, and Snapper... it’s laughable even to argue about it. Dogs like your Snapper — every huntsman’s got a dozen of them, ten a penny. Twenty-five rubles is a fair price for him.
. Some demon of contradiction seems to have got into you today, Ivan Vasilyevich. First you made out the Meadows were yours, now that Guesser’s better than Snapper. I don’t like it when a man says what he doesn’t think. You know perfectly well that Snapper is a hundred times better than your... your stupid Guesser. Why say the opposite?
. I see, Natalya Stepanovna, you take me for either a blind man or a fool. Do understand, your Snapper is undershot!
. That’s not true.
. Undershot!
(shouts)
. Not true!
. Why are you shouting, madam?
. Why do you talk such nonsense? It’s really outrageous! It’s time your Guesser was shot, and you compare him with Snapper!
. Excuse me, I cannot continue this argument. My heart is palpitating.
. I’ve noticed that those hunters argue most who understand least.
. Madam, I beg you, be silent... My heart is bursting...
(Shouts.)
Be silent!
. I won’t be silent until you admit that Snapper is a hundred times better than your Guesser!
. A hundred times worse! May your Snapper drop dead! My temples... my eye... my shoulder...
. As for your foolish Guesser, there’s no need for him to drop dead, since he’s half dead already!
(weeps)
. Be silent! My heart is bursting!!
. I won’t be silent!
VII
VII
(enters)
. Now what is it?
. Papa, tell us honestly, on your conscience: which dog is better, our Snapper or his Guesser?
. Stepan Stepanovich, I implore you, tell me just this one thing: is your Snapper undershot or not? Yes or no?
. And what if he is? What of it! There isn’t a better dog in the whole district, and so on.
. But my Guesser is better, isn’t he? On your honor!
. Now don’t excite yourself, my precious fellow... Allow me... Your Guesser, mark you, has his good points... He’s pure-bred, sound on his legs, well-ribbed, and so forth. But this dog, if you want to know, my fine fellow, has two serious defects: he’s old, and he’s short in the muzzle.
. Excuse me, I have palpitations of the heart... Let’s stick to the facts... Kindly recall that in Maruskino’s clover my Guesser ran neck and neck with the Count’s Dasher, while your Snapper fell behind by a whole verst.
. He fell behind because the Count’s huntsman struck him with his whip.
. And rightly so. All the dogs were running after the fox, and Snapper started worrying a sheep!
. That’s not true, sir!.. My dear fellow, I’m quick-tempered, and, mark you, I beg you, let’s drop this argument. He struck him because everyone’s jealous when they see another man’s dog... Yes, indeed! Every one of you begrudges it! And you, sir, are not without sin either! The very moment, mark you, you notice that someone’s dog is better than your Guesser, you at once begin this and that... and so on... I remember it all, you know!
. And I remember too!
(mimicking)
. I remember too... And what is it you remember?
. Palpitations... My leg’s gone numb... I can’t go on.
(mimicking)
. Palpitations... What sort of a huntsman are you? You ought to lie on the stove in the kitchen squashing cockroaches, not go chasing foxes! Palpitations...
. Really, what sort of a huntsman are you? With your palpitations, mark you, you ought to sit at home, not go jolting about in the saddle. If you actually hunted, it would be one thing, but you only ride out to argue and get in the way of other people’s dogs, and so forth. I’m quick-tempered, let’s drop this conversation. You’re no sort of a huntsman at all, mark you!
. And are you a huntsman? You only ride out to curry favor with the Count and scheme and intrigue... My heart!.. You’re an intriguer!
. What did you say? I’m an intriguer?
(Shouts.)
Be silent!
. An intriguer!
. You young pup! You puppy!
. You old rat! You Jesuit!
. Be silent, or I’ll shoot you like a partridge with a filthy gun! You whipper-snapper!
. Everyone knows that — oh, my heart! — your late wife used to beat you... My leg... my temples... sparks... I’m falling, falling!..
. And you’re under your housekeeper’s thumb!
. There, there, there... my heart has burst! My shoulder’s come off! Where is my shoulder?.. I’m dying!
(Falls into an armchair.)
A doctor!
(Faints.)
. You young pup! Milksop! Whipper-snapper! I feel faint!
(Drinks water.)
Faint!
. What sort of a huntsman are you? You don’t even know how to sit a horse!
(To her father.)
Papa! What’s the matter with him? Papa! Look, Papa!
(Shrieks.)
Ivan Vasilyevich! He’s dead!
. I feel faint!.. I can’t breathe!.. Air!
. He’s dead!
(Tugs at Lomov’s sleeve.)
Ivan Vasilyich! Ivan Vasilyich! What have we done? He’s dead!
(Falls into an armchair.)
A doctor, a doctor!
(Hysterics.)
. Oh!.. What is it? What’s the matter with you?
(moans)
. He’s dead... dead!
умер!
. Who’s dead?
(Looking at Lomov.)
He really has died! Good heavens! Water! A doctor!
(Holds a glass to Lomov’s mouth.)
Drink this!.. No, he’s not drinking... So that means he’s dead, and so on... Unhappiest of men that I am! Why don’t I put a bullet through my own head? Why haven’t I cut my throat before now? What am I waiting for? Give me a knife! Give me a pistol!
He’s coming to, it seems... Drink some water!.. There now...
. Sparks... a mist... Where am I?
. Get married, the sooner the better, and — the devil take the pair of you! She consents!
(Joins the hands of Lomov and his daughter.)
She consents, and so on. I give you my blessing, and all that. Only leave me in peace!
. Eh? What?
. А? Что?
(Rising.)
Who?
. She consents! Well? Kiss each other and... and the devil take you both!
(moans)
. He’s alive... Yes, yes, I consent...
. Kiss each other!
. Eh? Who?
. А? кого?
(Kisses Natalya Stepanovna.)
Delighted... But allow me, what’s the matter? Ah, yes, I understand... My heart... sparks... I am happy, Natalya Stepanovna...
(Kisses her hand.)
My leg’s gone numb...
. I... I am happy too...
. As if a mountain had fallen from my shoulders... Ugh!
. But... all the same, admit it, even now: Guesser is worse than Snapper.
. Better!
. Worse!
. Well, and so domestic bliss begins! Champagne!
. Better!
. Worse! Worse! Worse!
(trying to shout him down)
. Champagne! Champagne!
