Letter · 1891

To N. M. Lintvareva, 5 July 1891. Bogimovo.

H. M. ЛИНТВАРЕВОЙ, 5 июля 1891 г.

Headnote

Written from Bogimovo the same day as, a companion letter to his sister Maria Pavlovna ("Masha") Chekhova: dateline, header line, and a run of short comic paragraphs on one running theme, all addressed to the same correspondent, Natalya Mikhailovna Lintvaryova, of the Lintvaryov family who hosted the Chekhovs at Luka in earlier summers.

The letter’s mock-formal salutation, "Most esteemed Baroness Ikskul," is not addressed to the real Baroness Varvara Ikskul but is Chekhov’s household nickname for Masha herself – confirmed by the companion letter 982, written to Masha the same day, which closes "bring Baroness Ikskul with you" and asks Lintvaryova’s household to be greeted. Read together, the two letters are a coordinated joke: Chekhov begs Masha directly to hurry home (982) and simultaneously enlists Lintvaryova, addressing her as if she were charged with fetching "the Baroness," to drive Masha back to Bogimovo. The letter is built entirely on shared household in-jokes and nicknames from that summer at Bogimovo: Amenaisa, Gege, Pauchok ("the little spider," a nickname for a household naturalist who is cataloguing spiders –. 982’s fuller account of his spider-leg count), Kiselikha and the young Kiselyovs, and Elena, who also appears running up and down the stairs in 982 – the same recurring figure in both letters, referent not otherwise specified in the source.

The content is a string of comic appeals and reports rather than business: an invitation dressed as an order (bring seventy-three colored jackets and come), reminiscences of shared outings (Vorontsovo, the dog Fingal, a picnic, fried eggs), a mock complaint about the glitter of life at Luka among "the Markovs and the barons", news of an amateur theatrical planned for 15 July, the illness of the old innkeeper of an establishment Chekhov jokingly calls their "Hermitage", his mother’s greetings, an ultimatum that he will leave Bogimovo if Masha has not returned by the 10th, and closing notes on a failed kitchen garden and the summer heat. is a one-word sign-off, "Carnation" (Гвоздика), left untranslated as anything but the plain flower name; its significance as a nickname or private joke is not otherwise established in this corpus.

Most esteemed Baroness Ikskul! Take a long switch and drive Masha home. Bogimovo won’t forget her, for we need Masha, and her departure has made as much disorder as if all the stars had suddenly vanished from the sky. And along with Masha, you positively must come too. Pack all seventy-three of your colored jackets into your trunk and come. Really, it isn’t as dull here as it seemed to you. Remember our pleasant walk to Vorontsovo, the dear little dog Fingal, remember red-haired, cross-eyed Amenaisa and her unhinged knight Gege. And what a spider, and what an aunt he has! Remember our club, with Kiselikha and the little Kiselyovs, and with Verochka, who looks you straight in the face, smiles, and nods her head. And have you forgotten the picnic? And the fried eggs Amenaisa cooked in a saucepan? And the cool of the evening?
At Luka, in the company of the Markovs and the barons, you grew used to glitter; talk of Loris, of brilliant academicians and dashing gallants, and all the fragrances wafting off your new lodgers, have turned your head. But come back to simplicity! Come to us, people of labor, people without glitter or scent.
The socialists go on sitting shut up in their wing without a break, thinking and thinking... Pauchok is at work. I have seen his work: very long and interesting. He is a superb zoologist and a great philosopher.
On the 15th of July we’re having theatricals. There will be tableaux vivants and a torchlight procession, and a mass of delights in the taste of my moral aunt-fiancee. We are all waiting for you impatiently. Even Amenaisa asks: will Natalya Mikhailovna come?
Tell Masha that I already wrote to her about Elena. She ran off to the factory after her Paris, but came back again and is already running up and down the stairs. The old man who keeps our "Hermitage," where you indulged in excesses, has fallen dangerously ill. He will probably die.
My regards to everyone of yours. Mother sends her bow and earnestly begs you to come. Keep well and prosper.
Carnation.
If Masha does not come by the 10th, I shall leave Bogimovo. Tell her so.
There is nothing in our kitchen garden: no cucumbers, no cabbage... "Everything froze," Amenaisa excuses herself. And the calves keep jumping and jumping and will soon eat up Amenaisa herself.
We are having unbearable heat and no rain. Gege has already brought in the clover.
