The Cherry Orchard

Headnote

1 "The Cherry Orchard" ("Вишнёвый сад"), subtitled "A Comedy in Four Acts," was Chekhov’s last completed play. He worked on it through 1903 while already seriously ill with the tuberculosis that would kill him within the year, and it premiered on 17 January 1904 (Old Style; 30 January, New Style) at the Moscow Art Theatre, directed by Konstantin Stanislavski and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko. The date was chosen deliberately: it was Chekhov’s own name-day (the feast of his patron saint in the Orthodox calendar), and the theater used the occasion to stage an elaborate onstage tribute to him between acts, an ordeal by most contemporary accounts – Chekhov, already gravely unwell and by then largely resident in Yalta for his health, found the ceremony exhausting rather than gratifying, and is reported to have been displeased that Stanislavski’s production leaned toward pathos and tragedy where he himself insisted, against his director, that he had written a comedy, even a farce in places. Chekhov died a little over five months later, on 15 July 1904 (New Style; 2 July, Old Style), in Badenweiler, Germany, where he had gone for a rest cure – close to the end of his life, but a matter of months, not the weeks sometimes loosely claimed, and this headnote gives the corrected interval with the same confidence as the premiere date itself, since both are well and independently documented in standard Chekhov biography and theater history. The play’s tension between Chekhov’s own comic intention and its subsequent history of being staged, translated, and read as a tragedy of loss is itself one of the most discussed features of its reception, and this headnote does not attempt to resolve it, only to flag it for a reader encountering the play for the first time.

2 Lyubov Andreyevna Ranevskaya returns to her family estate after five years in Paris, where she fled following the drowning of her young son Grisha in the estate’s river and her subsequent entanglement with a lover who has since exploited and abandoned her. She arrives with her seventeen-year-old daughter Anya and finds the household in financial ruin: the estate, including its famous and much-loved cherry orchard, is mortgaged past its value and set to be auctioned for debt in August. Yermolai Lopakhin, a wealthy merchant whose own father and grandfather were serfs on this very estate, proposes a practical way out – subdivide the orchard and the land along the river into leased plots for summer cottages – and repeats the plan with mounting urgency across the first three acts. Ranevskaya and her brother Gayev, a sentimental, ineffectual man given to mimed billiards shots and grandiose, empty declarations (including a speech addressed at length to the family’s antique cupboard), cannot bring themselves to accept the plan or to act on any of their own vaguer schemes (a rich marriage for Anya, a loan against a distant aunt’s promised money, a position at a bank), and the orchard’s fate remains unresolved through a houseful of visiting neighbors, servants, and hangers-on, including the eternal student Pyotr Trofimov – Grisha’s former tutor, now Anya’s idealistic companion, given to speeches about labor, atonement for the sins of serfdom, and being "above love" – and Ranevskaya’s adopted daughter Varya, who runs the household frugally and is universally expected, and never quite manages, to marry Lopakhin. The estate is auctioned in Act Three, during a ball the family throws with money it does not have; Lopakhin returns from the sale, at first reluctant to admit what has happened, then breaks into an exultant, half-disbelieving account of having bought the estate himself, the descendant of its former serfs now its owner. Act Four finds the family dispersing: Ranevskaya returns to Paris and the same man who ruined her, Gayev takes the bank position, Anya leaves eager for a new life, Trofimov departs still preaching progress while unable to find his own galoshes, and the long-expected marriage between Lopakhin and Varya once again fails to happen, dissolved in a stilted, inconclusive conversation about the weather. The family departs; the sound of an axe already striking the cherry trees is heard as they go. In the play’s final, wordless minutes, the household discovers that Firs, the eighty-seven-year-old valet who refused his own freedom at the 1861 Emancipation and has served the family his whole life, has been forgotten and left behind, locked inside the empty house; he appears alone, finds the door locked, lies down on a sofa to rest, and the play closes with the same distant, mournful sound of a snapped string heard once before at the end of Act Two, now paired with the axe, as Firs lies motionless.

3 Text" form used throughout the rest of the play; normalized to match, including the two "Voice" stage cues at-853 and-857 (e.g. "Anya’s voice:"), which follow the lowercase "voice" convention already established earlier in the play (1921,). The rest of the translation follows this corpus’s standard practice of rendering Chekhov’s stage directions, honorifics, and period vocabulary closely rather than modernizing it; see the glossary sidecar for notes on the verst and desyatina units of distance and land area (including one place,, where a desyatina figure late in the text is rendered as "acres" rather than this translation’s usual transliterated "desyatina"), the 1861 Emancipation reference, billiards terminology, and period cultural touchstones (the Brockhaus-Efron-type "Encyclopedic Dictionary," Buckle, Caligula, Nietzsche). The play’s title symbol and the Okhmelia/Hamlet-Ophelia pun at/473 are covered in the allusions sidecar.

A room that is still called the nursery. One of the doors leads to Anya’s room. Dawn; the sun will rise soon. It is already May, the cherry trees are in bloom, but it is cold in the orchard, a morning frost. The windows in the room are shut.
Enter Dunyasha with a candle, and Lopakhin with a book in his hand.
Lopakhin. The train’s come in, thank God. What time is it?
Dunyasha. Nearly two. (Puts out the candle.) It’s light already.
Lopakhin. And how late was the train, then? Two hours at least. (Yawns and stretches.) I’m a fine one, what a fool I made of myself! Came here on purpose to meet them at the station, and then went and overslept... Fell asleep sitting up. Annoying... You might at least have woken me.
Dunyasha. I thought you’d gone. (Listens.) There, it sounds like they’re coming now.
Lopakhin (listens). No... Getting the luggage, this and that...

Lyubov Andreyevna’s been living abroad five years, I don’t know what she’s become now... She’s a good person. An easy, simple person. I remember, when I was a lad of about fifteen, my late father – he kept a shop in the village here at the time – hit me in the face with his fist, blood came from my nose... We’d come into the yard together for some reason, and he was drunk. Lyubov Andreyevna, I remember it as if it were now, still quite young then, so slender, led me to the washstand, right in this very room, in the nursery. "Don’t cry," she says, "little peasant, it’ll heal before your wedding..."

Little peasant... My father, it’s true, was a peasant, and here I am in a white waistcoat, yellow shoes. A pig’s snout in a fine bread shop... Only that I’m rich now, plenty of money, but if you think about it and look closely, I’m a peasant through and through... (Leafs through the book.) I was reading this book and understood nothing. Read it and fell asleep.

Dunyasha. And the dogs didn’t sleep all night, they sense their masters are coming.
Lopakhin. What’s the matter with you, Dunyasha, being so...
Dunyasha. My hands are shaking. I’ll faint.
Lopakhin. You’re much too delicate, Dunyasha. And you dress like a young lady, and your hair too. That won’t do. One has to remember one’s place.
Enter Yepikhodov with a bouquet; he is wearing a jacket and brightly polished boots that creak loudly; on entering, he drops the bouquet.
Yepikhodov (picking up the bouquet). Here, the gardener sent this, says to put it in the dining room. (Gives the bouquet to Dunyasha.)
Lopakhin. And bring me some kvass.
Dunyasha. Right away. (Goes out.)
Yepikhodov. There’s a morning frost now, three degrees of cold, and the cherry is all in bloom. I cannot approve of our climate. (Sighs.) I cannot. Our climate does not manage to oblige at just the right moment. Here, Yermolai Alexeyich, allow me to add, I bought myself a pair of boots the day before yesterday, and they, I venture to assure you, creak so that there’s simply no bearing it. What ought I grease them with?
Lopakhin. Leave off. You’re tiresome.
Yepikhodov. Every day some misfortune happens to me. And I don’t grumble, I’ve grown used to it, I even smile.
Dunyasha enters, hands Lopakhin some kvass.
I’ll be going. (Bumps into a chair, which falls over.) There... (As if triumphant.) There, you see, pardon the expression, what a circumstance, incidentally... It’s simply remarkable, really! (Goes out.)
Dunyasha. And to me, Yermolai Alexeyich, I must confess, Yepikhodov has made a proposal.
Lopakhin. Ah!
Dunyasha. I don’t quite know how... He’s a quiet man, only sometimes when he starts talking, you can’t understand a thing. It’s nice, and it’s touching, only it’s incomprehensible. I think I like him. He loves me madly. He’s an unlucky man, something happens every day. They tease him about it here: two-and-twenty misfortunes...
Lopakhin (listening). There, I think they’re coming...
Dunyasha. They’re coming! What’s the matter with me... I’ve gone quite cold.
Lopakhin. They really are coming. Let’s go and meet them. Will she recognize me? Five years since we’ve seen each other.
Dunyasha (agitated). I’m going to fall down right now... Oh, I’ll fall!
Two carriages are heard driving up to the house. Lopakhin and Dunyasha go out quickly. The stage is empty. Noise starts up in the neighboring rooms. Firs, who has been to meet Lyubov Andreyevna, crosses the stage hurriedly, leaning on a little cane; he is in an old-fashioned livery and a tall hat; he is saying something to himself, but not a word can be made out. The noise offstage grows louder and louder. A voice: "Let’s go through this way..." Lyubov Andreyevna, Anya, and Charlotta Ivanovna with a little dog on a leash, dressed for travel. Varya in a coat and a kerchief, Gayev, Simeonov-Pishchik, Lopakhin, Dunyasha with a bundle and an umbrella, servants with luggage – all crossing through the room.
Anya. Let’s go through here. Mama, do you remember what room this is?
Lyubov Andreyevna (joyfully, through tears). The nursery!
Varya. How cold it is, my hands are quite numb. (To Lyubov Andreyevna.) Your rooms, the white one and the purple one, have stayed just the same, mamochka.
Lyubov Andreyevna. The nursery, my dear, lovely room... I slept here when I was little... (Weeps.) And now I feel like a little girl again... (Kisses her brother, Varya, then her brother again.) And Varya’s just the same as before, still looks like a little nun. And I recognized Dunyasha too... (Kisses Dunyasha.)
Gayev. The train was two hours late. What do you think of that? What sort of way is that to run things?
Charlotta (to Pishchik). My dog eats nuts too, you know.
Pishchik (astonished). Just imagine!
All go out except Anya and Dunyasha.
Dunyasha. We’ve been waiting so long for you... (Takes off Anya’s coat and hat.)
Anya. I didn’t sleep on the way, four nights... now I’m terribly cold.
Dunyasha. You left during Lent, there was snow then, there was frost, and now? My darling! (Laughs, kisses her.) I’ve been waiting for you so, my joy, my little light... I must tell you right now, I can’t bear to wait even one minute...
Anya (listlessly). Something again...
Dunyasha. The clerk Yepikhodov made me a proposal, after Easter.
Anya. You always go on about the same thing... (Fixes her hair.) I’ve lost all my hairpins... (She is very tired, even swaying on her feet.)
Dunyasha. I really don’t know what to think. He loves me, he loves me so!
Anya (looking through her doorway, tenderly). My room, my windows, just as if I’d never left. I’m home! Tomorrow morning I’ll get up and run into the orchard... Oh, if only I could sleep! I didn’t sleep the whole way, I was worn out with worry.
Dunyasha. The day before yesterday Pyotr Sergeyich arrived.
Anya (joyfully). Petya!
Dunyasha. He’s sleeping in the bathhouse, living there. Afraid, he says, of being in the way. (Glancing at her pocket watch.) We ought to wake him, but Varvara Mikhailovna told us not to. Don’t you wake him, she says.
Enter Varya, a bunch of keys at her waist.
Varya. Dunyasha, coffee, quickly... Mamochka’s asking for coffee.
Dunyasha. This very minute. (Goes out.)
Varya. Well, thank God, you’ve arrived. You’re home again. (Fondly.) My darling’s come home! My beauty’s come home!
Anya. I’ve been through so much.
Varya. I can just imagine!
Anya. I set out in Holy Week, it was cold then. Charlotta talks the whole way, does her tricks. And why did you saddle me with Charlotta...
Varya. You couldn’t very well travel alone, darling. At seventeen!
Anya. We arrive in Paris, it’s cold there, snow. My French is dreadful. Mama lives on the fifth floor, I come to her, and she’s got some Frenchmen there, ladies, an old priest with a little book, and it’s full of smoke, uncomfortable. I suddenly felt so sorry for Mama, so sorry, I put my arms round her head and held her tight and couldn’t let go. Mama kept caressing me after that, crying...
Varya (through tears). Don’t, don’t say it...
Anya. She’s already sold her little house near Menton, she’s got nothing left, nothing at all. I hadn’t a kopek left either, we barely made it here. And Mama doesn’t understand! We sit down to dinner at the station, and she orders the most expensive things and tips the waiters a ruble each. Charlotta does too. Yasha demands his own portion too, it’s simply dreadful. You know Mama has a valet, Yasha, we’ve brought him here with us...
Varya. I saw the scoundrel.
Anya. Well, how is it? Have they paid the interest?
Varya. Not a chance.
Anya. My God, my God...
Varya. In August they’ll be selling the estate...
Anya. My God...
Lopakhin (peeks in at the door and bleats). Meh-eh-eh... (Goes out.)
Varya (through tears). Oh, I’d give it to him... (Shakes her fist.)
Anya (embracing Varya, quietly). Varya, has he proposed? (Varya shakes her head no.) But he loves you, doesn’t he... Why don’t the two of you have it out, what are you waiting for?
Varya. I think nothing’s going to come of it, for us. He’s got so much business, he’s got no time for me... and pays me no attention at all. God be with him entirely, it’s hard for me to even see him... Everyone talks about our wedding, everyone congratulates us, and in fact there’s nothing there at all, it’s all like a dream... (In a different tone.) You’ve got a brooch like a little bee.
Anya (sadly). Mama bought that. (Goes into her own room, speaks cheerfully, childishly.) And in Paris I went up in a hot-air balloon!
Varya. My darling’s come home! My beauty’s come home!
Dunyasha has already come back with the coffeepot and is making coffee.
(Standing near the door.) I go about all day long, darling, seeing to the household, and I’m always dreaming. If only we could marry you off to a rich man, then I’d be at peace, I’d go off to a hermitage, then to Kiev... to Moscow, and just keep going like that from one holy place to another... I’d go on and on. What blessedness!..
Anya. The birds are singing in the orchard. What time is it now? Varya. Must be past two. Time for you to sleep, darling. (Going into Anya’s room.) What blessedness!
Enter Yasha with a travelling rug and a small travelling bag.
Yasha (crossing the stage, delicately). May one pass through here, if you please?
Dunyasha. I hardly recognize you, Yasha. How you’ve changed abroad.
Yasha. Hm... And who might you be?
Dunyasha. When you left here, I was about this high... (Shows the height from the floor.) Dunyasha, Fyodor Kozoyedov’s daughter. You don’t remember!
Yasha. Hm... A little cucumber! (Looks around and embraces her; she cries out and drops a saucer. Yasha quickly goes out.)
Varya (in the doorway, in a displeased voice). What now?
Dunyasha (through tears). I broke a saucer...
Varya. That’s good luck.
Anya (coming out of her room). We ought to warn Mama: Petya’s here...
Varya. I gave orders not to wake him.
Anya (thoughtfully). Six years ago Father died, and a month later my brother Grisha drowned in the river, a pretty seven-year-old boy. Mama couldn’t bear it, she went away, went away without looking back... (Shudders.) How well I understand her, if only she knew!

Firs (goes to the coffee pot, preoccupied). The mistress will be having her breakfast here... (Puts on white gloves.) Is the coffee ready? (Sternly, to Dunyasha.) You! And the cream?
Dunyasha. Ah, my God... (Hurries out.)
Firs (fussing about the coffee pot). Eh, you fumbler... (Mutters to himself.) Come back from Paris... And the master used to go to Paris too... by carriage... (Laughs.)
Varya. Firs, what are you talking about?
Firs. What is it you wish? (Joyfully.) My mistress has come home! I’ve lived to see it! Now I could even die... (Weeps with joy.)
Enter Lyubov Andreyevna, Gayev, Lopakhin, and Simeonov-Pishchik; Simeonov-Pishchik in a fine-cloth coat and wide trousers. Gayev, as he enters, makes movements with his arms and body, as if he were playing billiards.
Lyubov Andreyevna. How does it go? Let me remember... Yellow in the corner! Double into the middle!
Gayev. Cut into the corner! There was a time, sister, when you and I slept in this very room, and now I’m already fifty-one, strange as that is...
Lopakhin. Yes, time goes by.
Gayev. What?
Lopakhin. Time, I said, goes by.
Gayev. It smells of patchouli in here.
Anya. I’m going to bed. Good night, Mama. (Kisses her mother.)
Lyubov Andreyevna. My precious little girl. (Kisses her hands.) Are you glad to be home? I still can’t quite believe it.
Anya. Goodbye, Uncle.
Gayev (kisses her face and hands). God be with you. How like your mother you are! (To his sister.) At her age, Lyuba, you were just like her.
Anya gives her hand to Lopakhin and Pishchik, goes out and closes the door behind her.
Lyubov Andreyevna. She’s very tired.
Pishchik. It’s a long journey, I dare say.
Varya (to Lopakhin and Pishchik). Well, gentlemen? It’s past two, time you knew when to leave.
Lyubov Andreyevna (laughs). You’re just the same as ever, Varya. (Draws her close and kisses her.) I’ll just finish my coffee, and then we’ll all go.
Firs puts a small cushion under her feet.
Thank you, dear. I’ve grown used to my coffee. I drink it day and night. Thank you, my old dear. (Kisses Firs.)
Varya. I’ll go and see whether all the things have been brought in... (Goes out.)
Lyubov Andreyevna. Can it really be me sitting here? (Laughs.) I want to jump up, to wave my arms about. (Covers her face with her hands.) What if I’m dreaming! God knows, I love my homeland, I love it tenderly, I couldn’t bear to look out of the train window, I kept crying. (Through tears.) But still, I must drink my coffee. Thank you, Firs, thank you, my old dear. I’m so glad you’re still alive.
Firs. The day before yesterday.
Gayev. He doesn’t hear well.
Lopakhin. I have to leave for Kharkov now, around five in the morning. Such a pity! I wanted to look at you, to talk a while... You are still as splendid as ever.
Pishchik (breathing heavily). Even prettier... Dressed in the Paris fashion... may my cart and all four wheels go to ruin...
Lopakhin. Your brother, Leonid Andreyich here, calls me a boor, a money-grubber, but that’s entirely the same to me. Let him say what he likes. I only wish you would trust me as you used to, that your wonderful, touching eyes would look at me the way they once did. Merciful God! My father was a serf belonging to your grandfather and your father, but you yourself once did so much for me that I’ve forgotten all that and I love you as if you were my own... more than my own.
Lyubov Andreyevna. I can’t sit still, I simply can’t... (Jumps up and walks about in great agitation.) I won’t survive this happiness... Laugh at me, I’m being foolish... My own dear little cupboard... (Kisses the cupboard.) My little table.
Gayev. And Nanny died while you were away.
Lyubov Andreyevna (sits and drinks coffee). Yes, God rest her soul. I had a letter about it.
Gayev. And Anastasy died too. Petrushka the Squint-Eyed has left me and now lives in town with the police superintendent. (Takes a box of fruit drops from his pocket, sucks one.)
Pishchik. My daughter, Dashenka... sends you her regards...
Lopakhin. I’d like to tell you something very pleasant, something cheerful. (Glancing at his watch.) I have to leave soon, there’s no time to talk... well, I’ll say it in a few words. As you already know, your cherry orchard is being sold for debt, the auction is set for the twenty-second of August, but don’t worry, my dear lady, sleep soundly, there’s a way out... Here is my plan. Please listen! Your estate is only twenty versts from town, the railway line passes close by, and if the cherry orchard and the land along the river were divided into plots for summer cottages and then leased out, you would have at the very least twenty-five thousand a year in income.
Gayev. Excuse me, what nonsense!
Lyubov Andreyevna. I don’t quite understand you, Yermolai Alexeyich.
Lopakhin. You would charge the summer tenants at the very least twenty-five roubles a year per desyatina, and if you announce it now, I’ll guarantee you anything you like, by autumn there won’t be a single free plot left, they’ll all be taken. In a word, congratulations, you’re saved. The location is wonderful, the river is deep. Only, of course, it needs tidying up, clearing out... for instance, say, pull down all the old buildings, this house here, which is no longer good for anything, cut down the old cherry orchard...
Lyubov Andreyevna. Cut it down? My dear man, forgive me, you don’t understand anything. If there is anything interesting, even remarkable, in the whole province, it’s only our cherry orchard.
Lopakhin. The only remarkable thing about this orchard is that it’s very large. The cherries bear fruit once every two years, and even then there’s nowhere to put them, nobody buys them.
Gayev. And this orchard is even mentioned in the "Encyclopedic Dictionary."
Lopakhin (glancing at his watch). If we don’t think of anything, don’t come to any decision, then on the twenty-second of August both the cherry orchard and the whole estate will be sold at auction. Make up your minds! There’s no other way out, I swear to you. None whatsoever.
Firs. In the old days, forty or fifty years back, they used to dry the cherries, soak them, pickle them, make jam of them, and sometimes...
Gayev. Be quiet, Firs.
Firs. And sometimes they’d send the dried cherries by the cartload to Moscow and to Kharkov. There was money in it then! And the dried cherries in those days were soft, juicy, sweet, fragrant... They knew the method back then...
Lyubov Andreyevna. And where is that method now?
Firs. Forgotten. Nobody remembers it.
Pishchik (to Lyubov Andreyevna). What’s it like in Paris? Well? Did you eat frogs?
Lyubov Andreyevna. I ate crocodiles.
Pishchik. Just imagine...
Lopakhin. Until now, in the countryside, there were only gentry and peasants, but now summer tenants have appeared too. Every town, even the smallest, is now surrounded by summer cottages. And you might say that in twenty years or so the summer tenant will multiply beyond all measure. For now he only drinks his tea on the balcony, but it could well happen that on his one desyatina he’ll take up farming, and then your cherry orchard will become happy, rich, splendid...
Gayev (indignant). What nonsense!
Enter Varya and Yasha.
Varya. There are two telegrams for you here, Mama dear. (Picks out a key and unlocks the old cupboard with a jingle.) Here they are.
Lyubov Andreyevna. They’re from Paris. (Tears up the telegrams without reading them.) Paris is finished with...
Gayev. But do you know, Lyuba, how old that cupboard is? A week ago I pulled out the bottom drawer, and I looked, and there were numbers burned into it. The cupboard was made exactly a hundred years ago. What do you think of that? Eh? We might have celebrated its jubilee. It’s an inanimate object, and yet, all the same, it’s a bookcase.
Pishchik (astonished). A hundred years... Just imagine!..
Gayev. Yes... Now there’s a thing... (Feeling the cupboard.) Dear, most esteemed cupboard! I salute your existence, which for over a hundred years now has been directed toward the bright ideals of goodness and justice; your silent summons to fruitful labor has not weakened over the course of a hundred years, sustaining (through tears) in the generations of our family courage, faith in a better future, and cultivating in us the ideals of goodness and social awareness.
Pause.
Lopakhin. Yes...
Да...
Lyubov Andreyevna. You’re just the same as ever, Lenya.
Gayev (a little embarrassed). Off the ball to the right, into the corner! Cut into the middle!
Lopakhin (looking at his watch). Well, it’s time for me to go.
Yasha (handing Lyubov Andreyevna her medicine). Perhaps you’ll take your pills now...
Pishchik. Don’t take medicines, my dear lady... they do no harm and no good either... Give them here... most esteemed lady. (Takes the pills, pours them out onto his palm, blows on them, puts them in his mouth, and washes them down with kvass.) There!
Lyubov Andreyevna (frightened). Why, you’ve lost your mind!
Pishchik. I took all the pills.
Lopakhin. What a bottomless pit.
Everyone laughs.
Firs. They stayed with us at Easter, ate half a bucket of cucumbers... (Mutters.)
Lyubov Andreyevna. What’s he going on about?
Varya. He’s been muttering like that for three years now. We’re used to it.
Yasha. His advanced age.
Charlotta Ivanovna, in a white dress, very thin and tightly laced, with a lorgnette at her belt, crosses the stage.
Lopakhin. Forgive me, Charlotta Ivanovna, I haven’t had a chance to greet you yet. (Tries to kiss her hand.)
Charlotta (drawing back her hand). If I let you kiss my hand, next you’ll want my elbow, then my shoulder...
Lopakhin. No luck for me today.
Everyone laughs.
Charlotta Ivanovna, show us a trick!
Lyubov Andreyevna. Charlotta, show us a trick!
Charlotta. No need. I want to sleep. (Goes out.)
Lopakhin. In three weeks we’ll meet again. (Kisses Lyubov Andreyevna’s hand.) For now, goodbye. Time to go. (To Gayev.) Until we meet again. (Kisses Pishchik.) Until we meet again. (Shakes hands with Varya, then with Firs and Yasha.) I don’t feel like leaving. (To Lyubov Andreyevna.) If you think it over about the cottages and decide, then let me know, I’ll get you a loan of fifty thousand or so. Think about it seriously.
Varya (angrily). Will you just go already!
Lopakhin. I’m going, I’m going... (Goes out.)
Gayev. A boor. Though, pardon me... Varya’s marrying him, that’s Varya’s little bridegroom.
Varya. Don’t say too much, dear uncle.
Lyubov Andreyevna. Well, Varya, I’ll be very glad. He’s a good man.
Pishchik. A man, one has to admit the truth... most worthy... And my Dashenka too... says the same, that... she says all sorts of things. (Snores, but at once wakes up.) All the same, most esteemed lady, lend me... a loan of two hundred and forty roubles... tomorrow I have to pay the interest on the mortgage...
Varya (frightened). There isn’t any, there isn’t!
Lyubov Andreyevna. I really don’t have anything.
Pishchik. It’ll turn up. (Laughs.) I never lose hope. Just when I think, well, it’s all over, I’m done for, look there — a railway line went right through my land, and... they paid me for it. And who knows, something else may well turn up any day now... Dashenka will win two hundred thousand... she has a ticket.
Lyubov Andreyevna. The coffee’s finished, we can go to rest.
Firs (brushing off Gayev, instructively). You’ve put on the wrong trousers again. Whatever am I to do with you!
Varya (quietly). Anya’s asleep. (Quietly opens the window.) The sun’s already up, it isn’t cold. Look, Mama dear: what wonderful trees! My God, the air! The starlings are singing!
Gayev (opens another window). The whole orchard is white. You haven’t forgotten, Lyuba? That long avenue running straight, straight ahead, like a stretched-out belt, it shines on moonlit nights. Do you remember? You haven’t forgotten?
Lyubov Andreyevna (looks out the window at the orchard). Oh, my childhood, my innocence! I slept in this very nursery, I looked out from here at the orchard, happiness woke with me every morning, and back then it was just as it is now, nothing has changed. (Laughs with joy.) All, all white! Oh, my orchard! After the dark, stormy autumn and the cold winter, you’re young again, full of happiness, the heavenly angels haven’t abandoned you... If only I could lift the heavy stone from my breast and my shoulders, if only I could forget my past!
Gayev. Yes, and the orchard will be sold for debt, strange as that is...
Lyubov Andreyevna. Look, there’s Mother walking through the orchard... in a white dress! (Laughs with joy.) It’s her.
Gayev. Where?
Где?
Varya. God be with you, mama dear.
Lyubov Andreyevna. There’s no one there, I imagined it. To the right, at the bend toward the arbor, a white little tree bent over – it looked like a woman...
Enter Trofimov, in a shabby student’s uniform, wearing spectacles.
What an astonishing garden! White masses of blossoms, blue sky...
Trofimov. Lyubov Andreyevna!
She glances round at him.
I’ll only bow to you and be off at once. (Fervently kisses her hand.) I was told to wait until morning, but I hadn’t the patience...
Lyubov Andreyevna looks at him in bewilderment.
Varya (through tears). It’s Petya Trofimov...
Trofimov. Petya Trofimov, your Grisha’s former tutor... Have I really changed so much?
Lyubov Andreyevna embraces him and weeps quietly.
Gayev (embarrassed). There, there, Lyuba.
Varya (weeping). I told you, Petya, to wait until tomorrow.
Lyubov Andreyevna. My Grisha... my boy... Grisha... my son...
сын...
Varya. What’s to be done, mama. It’s God’s will.
Trofimov (gently, through tears). There, there...
Lyubov Andreyevna (weeping quietly). My boy perished, drowned... What for? What for, my friend? (More quietly.) Anya’s asleep in there, and I’m speaking loudly... making a racket... Well, Petya? Why have you grown so plain? Why have you aged?
Trofimov. On the train some peasant woman called me this: a mangy gentleman.
Lyubov Andreyevna. You were quite a boy then, a dear little student, and now your hair’s thin, and spectacles. Can you really still be a student? (Goes toward the door.)
Trofimov. I suppose I’m fated to be an eternal student.
Lyubov Andreyevna (kisses her brother, then Varya). Well, go to bed... You’ve aged too, Leonid.
Pishchik (following her). So, off to bed then... Oh, my gout. I’ll stay the night with you... If only, Lyubov Andreyevna, my dear soul, tomorrow morning... two hundred forty roubles...
Gayev. There he goes again, the same old tune.
Pishchik. Two hundred forty roubles... to pay the interest on the mortgage.
Lyubov Andreyevna. I have no money, my dear fellow.
Pishchik. I’ll pay it back, my dear... It’s a trifling sum...
Lyubov Andreyevna. Well, all right, Leonid will give it to you... Give it to him, Leonid.
Gayev. I’ll give him something – don’t hold your breath.
Lyubov Andreyevna. What’s to be done, give it to him... He needs it... He’ll pay it back.
Lyubov Andreyevna, Trofimov, Pishchik, and Firs go out. Gayev, Varya, and Yasha remain.
Gayev. My sister still hasn’t broken the habit of throwing money about. (To Yasha.) Step back, my good fellow, you smell of chicken.
Yasha (with a smirk). And you, Leonid Andreich, are just the same as ever.
Gayev. What? (To Varya.) What did he say?
Varya (to Yasha). Your mother’s come from the village, she’s been sitting in the servants’ hall since yesterday, she wants to see you...
Yasha. Oh, never mind her!
Varya. Ah, shameless creature!
Yasha. A lot I need that. She could’ve come tomorrow just as well. (Goes out.)
Varya. Mama’s just the same as she was, hasn’t changed a bit. If she had her way, she’d give everything away.
Gayev. Yes...
Да...

If a great many remedies are offered against some illness, it means the illness is incurable. I think, I rack my brains, I have many remedies, a great many, and so, in essence, none at all. It would be good to receive an inheritance from someone, good to marry our Anya off to a very rich man, good to go to Yaroslavl and try our luck with the countess-aunt. The aunt, after all, is very, very rich.
Varya (weeping). If only God would help.
Gayev. Don’t blubber. The aunt is very rich, but she doesn’t care for us. My sister, to begin with, married a barrister, not a nobleman...
Anya appears in the doorway.
She married a non-nobleman and did not behave, one might say, very virtuously. She’s a good woman, kind, splendid, I love her dearly, but however one might invent mitigating circumstances, still, one must admit, she is sinful. It’s felt in her slightest movement.
Varya (in a whisper). Anya’s standing in the doorway.
Gayev. What?
Pause.
Strange, something’s got into my right eye... I’ve started seeing poorly. And on Thursday, when I was at the district court...
Enter Anya.
Varya. Why aren’t you asleep, Anya?
Anya. I can’t sleep. I just can’t.
Gayev. My little one. (Kisses Anya’s face, her hands.) My child... (Through tears.) You’re not my niece, you’re my angel, you’re everything to me. Believe me, believe me...
Anya. I believe you, uncle. Everyone loves you, respects you... but, dear uncle, you must be silent, only silent. What were you just saying about my mother, about your own sister? Why did you say it?
Gayev. Yes, yes... (Covers his face with her hand.) It really is dreadful! My God! God, save me! And today I made a speech to the bookcase... so foolish! And only when I’d finished did I realize how foolish it was.
Varya. It’s true, dear uncle, you ought to be silent. Just stay silent, that’s all.
Anya. If you stay silent, it’ll be more peaceful for you too.
Gayev. I’ll be silent. (Kisses Anya’s and Varya’s hands.) I’m silent. Only, about the matter at hand. On Thursday I was at the district court, well, a group of us gathered, the conversation turned to this and that, one thing and another, and it seems it may be possible to arrange a loan against promissory notes, to pay the bank’s interest.
Varya. If only the Lord would help!
Gayev. On Tuesday I’ll go, I’ll talk it over once more. (To Varya.) Don’t blubber. (To Anya.) Your mother will speak with Lopakhin; he certainly won’t refuse her... And you, once you’ve rested, will go to Yaroslavl to the countess, your grandmother. That way we’ll be working from three directions at once – and our business is in the bag. We’ll pay the interest, I’m convinced of it... (Puts a candy drop in his mouth.) On my honor, I swear by whatever you like, the estate will not be sold! (Excitedly.) I swear by my happiness! Here’s my hand on it, call me a worthless, dishonorable man if I let it come to auction! I swear it with my whole being!
Anya (her calm has returned to her, she is happy). How good you are, uncle, how clever! (Embraces her uncle.) I’m at peace now! I’m at peace! I’m happy!
Enter Firs.
Firs (reproachfully). Leonid Andreich, have you no fear of God! When will you go to sleep?
Gayev. In a moment, in a moment. You go on, Firs. I’ll undress myself this once, so be it. Well, children, off to bye-bye... Details tomorrow, but now go to sleep. (Kisses Anya and Varya.) I am a man of the eighties... People don’t praise those times, but still I can say I’ve suffered a good deal in life for my convictions. It’s not for nothing the peasant loves me. One must know the peasant! One must know from which...
Anya. There you go again, uncle!
Varya. Be silent, dear uncle.
Firs (angrily). Leonid Andreich!
Gayev. I’m coming, I’m coming... Go to bed. Off two cushions into the middle pocket! I’m playing it clean... (Goes out, Firs trotting after him.)
Anya. I’m at peace now. I don’t want to go to Yaroslavl, I don’t love grandmother, but still I’m at peace. Thank you, uncle. (Sits down.)
Varya. Time for bed. I’ll go. There was some unpleasantness here while you were away. In the old servants’ quarters, as you know, only the old servants live: Yefimyushka, Polya, Yevstigney, and Karp too. They took to letting some vagrants stay the night there – I said nothing. Only now, I hear, they’ve spread a rumor that I ordered them fed on nothing but peas. Out of stinginess, you see... And it’s all Yevstigney’s doing... Very well, I think. If that’s how it is, I think, then just you wait. I call Yevstigney... (Yawns.) He comes... Now then, I say, Yevstigney... you fool, you... (Looking at Anya.) Anechka!..
Pause.
She’s fallen asleep!.. (Takes Anya by the arm.) Let’s go to bed... Come along!.. (Leads her.) My darling’s fallen asleep! Come along...
They go.
Far beyond the orchard a shepherd plays on his pipe.
Trofimov crosses the stage and, seeing Varya and Anya, stops.
Shh... she’s asleep... asleep... Come along, dear.
Anya (quietly, half asleep). I’m so tired... all those little bells... Uncle... dear... both mama and uncle...
Varya. Come along, dear, come along... (They go into Anya’s room.)
Trofimov (with tender feeling). My sunshine! My springtime!

ACT TWO
A field. An old, crooked, long-abandoned little chapel, near it a well, large stones that once, apparently, were gravestones, and an old bench. A road to Gayev’s estate can be seen. Off to one side, rising up, poplars stand dark: there the cherry orchard begins. In the distance a row of telegraph poles, and far, far off on the horizon a large town is faintly outlined, visible only in very fine, clear weather. The sun will soon set. Charlotta, Yasha, and Dunyasha are sitting on the bench; Yepikhodov stands nearby playing the guitar; all sit lost in thought. Charlotta wears an old peaked cap; she has taken the rifle off her shoulder and is adjusting the buckle on the strap.
Charlotta (musing). I have no proper papers, I don’t know how old I am, and it always seems to me that I’m quite young. When I was a little girl, my father and mother used to travel round the fairs giving performances, very good ones. And I would do the salto mortale and various little tricks. And when papa and mama died, a German lady took me in and began to teach me. Very well. I grew up, then went to be a governess. But where I’m from and who I am – I don’t know... Who my parents were, perhaps they weren’t even married... I don’t know. (Takes a cucumber from her pocket and eats it.) I know nothing at all.
Pause.
I so want to talk to someone, but there’s no one... I have no one at all.
Yepikhodov (plays the guitar and sings). "What is the noisy world to me, what are friends and foes to me..." How pleasant it is to play the mandolin!
Dunyasha. That’s a guitar, not a mandolin. (Looks in a small mirror and powders her face.)
Yepikhodov. For a madman who’s in love, it’s a mandolin... (Hums.) "If only the heart were warmed by the ardor of mutual love..."
Yasha hums along.
Charlotta. These people sing dreadfully... ugh! Like jackals.
Dunyasha (to Yasha). What happiness it must be, all the same, to have been abroad.
Yasha. Yes, of course. I can’t but agree with you. (Yawns, then lights a cigar.)
Yepikhodov. That stands to reason. Abroad everything’s long since been in full complexion.
Yasha. Naturally.
Yepikhodov. I am a cultivated man, I read all sorts of remarkable books, but I simply cannot make out the direction, what it is I actually want, whether to live or to shoot myself, properly speaking, but nevertheless I always carry a revolver on me. Here it is... (Shows the revolver.)
Charlotta. I’m finished. I’ll go now. (Puts the rifle on.) You, Yepikhodov, are a very clever man and a very frightening one; women must love you madly. Brrr! (Goes.) All these clever men are so stupid, there’s no one for me to talk to... Always alone, alone, I have no one and... and who I am, why I am, unknown... (Goes out unhurriedly.)
Yepikhodov. Properly speaking, without touching on other matters, I must express myself about myself, among other things, that fate treats me without mercy, as a storm treats a small ship. If, let us suppose, I am mistaken, then why is it that this morning I wake up, to give an example, I look, and there on my chest is a spider of terrible size... Like this. (Shows with both hands.) And likewise you take some kvass to have a drink, and there, you look, something in the highest degree improper, like a cockroach.

I wish to trouble you, Avdotya Fyodorovna, for a couple of words.
Dunyasha. Speak.
Yepikhodov. I should like it to be with you alone... (Sighs.)
Dunyasha (embarrassed). Very well... only first bring me my little shawl... It’s by the cupboard... it’s a bit damp here...
Yepikhodov. Very good, ma’am... I’ll bring it, ma’am... Now I know what to do with my revolver... (Takes the guitar and goes out, strumming.)
Yasha. Two-and-twenty misfortunes! A stupid man, between you and me. (Yawns.)
Dunyasha. God forbid he should shoot himself.
A pause.
I’ve become anxious, I worry all the time. They took me in when I was still a girl, to serve the gentry, and now I’ve grown unused to the plain life, and see, my hands are white, white, like a young lady’s. I’ve become delicate, so refined, so genteel, afraid of everything... It’s frightening. And if you deceive me, Yasha, I don’t know what will become of my nerves.
Yasha (kisses her). My little cucumber! Of course, every girl ought to keep herself respectable, and what I dislike most of all is a girl of poor conduct.
Dunyasha. I’ve fallen passionately in love with you, you’re an educated man, you can discourse on anything.
A pause.
Yasha (yawns). Yes indeed... The way I see it: if a girl loves someone, that means she’s immoral.
A pause.
It’s pleasant to smoke a cigar in the fresh air... (Listens.) Someone’s coming this way... It’s the gentlefolk...
Dunyasha embraces him impulsively.
Go on home, as if you’d been down to bathe in the river, go by this path, or else they’ll meet you and think I’ve been keeping a rendezvous with you. I can’t bear that.
Dunyasha (coughs softly). The cigar’s given me a headache... (Goes out.)
Yasha remains, sitting near the old chapel. Lyubov Andreyevna, Gayev, and Lopakhin enter.
Lopakhin. We must decide once and for all – time won’t wait. The question, after all, is quite simple. Will you let the land for summer cottages, or won’t you? Answer in one word: yes or no? Just one word!
Lyubov Andreyevna. Who’s smoking such vile cigars here... (Sits down.)
Gayev. Now that they’ve built the railway, it’s become so convenient. (Sits down.) We went into town and had lunch... yellow ball, into the middle pocket! I ought to go into the house first, play just one game...
Lyubov Andreyevna. You’ll have time.
Lopakhin. Just one word! (Imploringly.) Give me an answer!
Gayev (yawning). Give whom?
Lyubov Andreyevna (looking into her purse). Yesterday there was a lot of money, and today there’s hardly any at all. My poor Varya feeds everyone on milk soup out of economy, in the kitchen the old folk are given nothing but peas, and I go and spend money so senselessly somehow... (Drops the purse, gold coins scatter.) There, they’ve spilled... (She is vexed.)
Yasha. Allow me, I’ll gather them up at once. (Collects the coins.)
Lyubov Andreyevna. Thank you, Yasha. And why did I go out to lunch at all... That wretched restaurant of yours with its music, tablecloths smelling of soap... Why drink so much, Lyonya? Why eat so much? Why talk so much? Today at the restaurant you were talking too much again, and all of it beside the point. About the seventies, about the decadents. And to whom? Talking to the waiters about decadents!
Lopakhin. Yes.
Да.
Gayev (waves his hand). I’m incorrigible, that’s plain to see... (Irritably, to Yasha.) What is it, you’re forever hovering before my eyes...
Yasha (laughs). I can’t help laughing whenever I hear your voice.
Gayev (to his sister). Either I go, or he does...
Lyubov Andreyevna. Go on, Yasha, off you go...
Yasha (hands Lyubov Andreyevna her purse). I’m going at once. (Barely able to keep from laughing.) This very minute... (Goes out.)
Lopakhin. That rich man Deriganov is planning to buy your estate. He’s said to be coming to the auction in person.
Lyubov Andreyevna. And where did you hear that?
Lopakhin. They’re saying it in town.
Gayev. Our aunt in Yaroslavl promised to send money, but when, and how much, nobody knows...
Lopakhin. How much will she send? A hundred thousand? Two hundred?
Lyubov Andreyevna. Well... Ten or fifteen thousand, and we’ll be grateful even for that.
Lopakhin. Forgive me, but such frivolous people as you, such unbusinesslike, strange people, I’ve never met before. You’re told in plain Russian that your estate is being sold, and you seem simply not to understand.
Lyubov Andreyevna. Well, what are we to do? Teach us, what?
Lopakhin. I teach you every single day. Every day I say the very same thing. Both the cherry orchard and the land absolutely must be let out for summer cottages, and it must be done now, at once – the auction is right around the corner! Do understand! Once you finally decide there are to be cottages, they’ll give you as much money as you like, and then you’re saved.
Lyubov Andreyevna. Cottages and summer people – forgive me, but that’s so vulgar.
Gayev. I entirely agree with you.
Lopakhin. I’ll either burst into sobs, or scream, or faint clean away. I can’t bear it! You’ve worn me out! (To Gayev.) You’re an old woman!
Gayev. Who is?
Lopakhin. An old woman! (Starts to leave.)
Lyubov Andreyevna (frightened). No, don’t go, stay, my dear. I beg you. Perhaps we’ll think of something!
Lopakhin. What is there to think about!
Lyubov Andreyevna. Don’t go, I beg you. It’s more cheerful with you here, at least...

I keep waiting for something, as if the house were about to collapse on top of us.
Gayev (deep in thought). Double into the corner pocket... Cannon into the middle...
Lyubov Andreyevna. We’ve sinned so very much...
Lopakhin. What sins could you possibly have...
Gayev (puts a lozenge in his mouth). They say I’ve eaten up my whole fortune in lozenges... (Laughs.)
Lyubov Andreyevna. Oh, my sins... I always squandered money without any restraint, like a madwoman, and I married a man who did nothing but run up debts. My husband died of champagne – he drank terribly – and to my misfortune I fell in love with another man, took up with him, and just at that time – it was the first punishment, a blow straight to the head – right here, on the river... my little boy drowned, and I went abroad, went away for good, never to return, never to see this river again... I shut my eyes and ran, beside myself, and he followed me... mercilessly, roughly. I bought a house near Menton, since he’d fallen ill there, and for three years I had no rest, by day or by night; the sick man wore me out, my soul withered. And last year, when the house was sold for debts, I went to Paris, and there he stripped me of everything, abandoned me, took up with another woman, I tried to poison myself... So foolish, so shameful... And suddenly I was drawn back to Russia, to my homeland, to my little girl... (Wipes away her tears.) Lord, Lord, be merciful, forgive me my sins! Don’t punish me anymore! (Takes a telegram from her pocket.) I got this today from Paris... He begs forgiveness, implores me to come back... (Tears up the telegram.) Somewhere there’s music, it seems. (Listens.)
Gayev. That’s our famous Jewish orchestra. Remember, four violins, a flute, and a double bass.
Lyubov Andreyevna. Does it still exist? We ought to invite them over sometime, arrange an evening.
Lopakhin (listens). I don’t hear anything... (Softly hums.) "For money the Germans will turn a Russian into a Frenchman." (Laughs.) What a play I saw at the theater yesterday, terribly funny.
Lyubov Andreyevna. And most likely there was nothing funny about it at all. You oughtn’t to go watching plays, but to look at yourselves a little more often. How drably you all live, how much needless talking you do.
Lopakhin. That’s true. One must say it plainly, our life is a foolish one...

My father was a peasant, an idiot, understood nothing, taught me nothing, only beat me when he was drunk, and always with a stick. In essence, I’m just the same sort of blockhead and idiot myself.
Lyubov Andreyevna. You ought to get married, my friend.
Lopakhin. Yes... That’s true.
Lyubov Andreyevna. To our Varya. She’s a good girl.
Lopakhin. Yes.
Да.
Lyubov Andreyevna. She’s of simple stock, works all day long, and, most important, she loves you. And you, too, have long been fond of her.
Lopakhin. Well, why not? I’m not opposed... She’s a good girl.

Firs enters; he has brought a coat.
Firs (to Gayev). If you please, sir, put this on, it’s damp.
Gayev (putting on the coat). You do pester me, old fellow.
Firs. Never mind that... You went off this morning without a word. (Looks him over.)
Lyubov Andreyevna. How you’ve aged, Firs!
Firs. What is it you wish?
Lopakhin. They say you’ve aged a great deal!
Firs. I’ve lived a long time. They were arranging to marry me off before your father was even born in this world... (Laughs.) And when the emancipation came, I was already head valet. I didn’t consent to the freedom then, I stayed on with the masters...

Lopakhin. Things were very good in the old days. At least there was flogging.
Firs (not having heard). Just so. The peasants kept to the masters, the masters kept to the peasants, and now it’s all come apart, you can’t make sense of anything.
Gayev. Be quiet, Firs. Tomorrow I have to go into town. I’ve been promised an introduction to a certain general who might give us a loan against a note.
Lopakhin. Nothing will come of it. And you won’t pay the interest, you may rest assured of that.
Lyubov Andreyevna. He’s raving. There’s no such thing as any generals.
Trofimov, Anya, and Varya enter.
Gayev. And here come our own folk.
Anya. Mama’s sitting here.
Lyubov Andreyevna (tenderly). Come, come... My dear ones... (Embracing Anya and Varya.) If only you both knew how I love you. Sit down beside me, just so.
Everyone sits down.
Lopakhin. Our eternal student is forever walking about with the young ladies.
Trofimov. That’s none of your business.
Lopakhin. He’ll soon be fifty, and he’s still a student.
Trofimov. Leave off your foolish jokes.
Lopakhin. Why so cross, you odd fellow?
Trofimov. Just don’t pester me.
Lopakhin (laughs). Allow me to ask you, what do you make of me?
Trofimov. This is what I make of you, Yermolai Alexeyich: you’re a rich man, soon you’ll be a millionaire. Just as, in the exchange of matter, a beast of prey is needed, one that devours everything in its path, so you too are needed.
Everyone laughs.
Varya. Petya, you’d better tell us about the planets instead.
Lyubov Andreyevna. No, let’s go on with yesterday’s conversation.
Trofimov. About what?
Gayev. About the proud man.
Trofimov. We talked a long time yesterday, but came to nothing. There’s something mystical about the proud man, as you understand him. Perhaps you’re right in your own way, but if we reason plainly, without embellishment, then what is there to be proud of, what sense is there in it, if a man is physiologically none too well made, if in his overwhelming majority he is coarse, unintelligent, and profoundly unhappy. We ought to stop admiring ourselves. We ought simply to work.
Gayev. You’ll die all the same.
Trofimov. Who knows? And what does it mean – to die? Perhaps a person has a hundred senses, and at death only the five we know perish, while the remaining ninety-five go on living.
Lyubov Andreyevna. How clever you are, Petya!..
Lopakhin (ironically). A regular passion!
Trofimov. Mankind is moving forward, perfecting its powers. Everything that is unattainable to it now will someday become near and understood, only one must work, help with all one’s strength those who seek the truth. Here in Russia, as yet, very few people work. The overwhelming majority of the educated people I know seek nothing, do nothing, and are as yet incapable of labor. They call themselves the educated class, yet they speak to their servants as inferiors, treat the peasants like animals, study poorly, read nothing serious, do absolutely nothing at all, only talk about the sciences, and understand little of art. They are all solemn, all wear stern faces, all talk only of weighty matters, philosophize, and meanwhile, before everyone’s eyes, the working people eat abominably, sleep without pillows, thirty and forty to a room, with bedbugs everywhere, stench, damp, moral squalor... And evidently all our fine talk exists only so that we may divert our own eyes and other people’s. Show me where our nurseries are, the ones so much and so often talked about, where are the reading rooms? They only write of them in novels, but in reality there are none at all. There is only filth, vulgarity, Asiatic backwardness... I am afraid of, and do not love, very solemn faces, I am afraid of solemn conversations. Better that we keep silent!
Lopakhin. You know, I get up at four in the morning, I work from morning till evening, well, I always have money of my own and other people’s passing through my hands, and I see what sort of people are around me. One need only begin to do something, to understand how few honest, decent people there are. Sometimes, when I can’t sleep, I think: Lord, you have given us immense forests, boundless fields, the deepest horizons, and living here, we ourselves ought truly to be giants...
Lyubov Andreyevna. You’ve taken a fancy to giants... They’re only good in fairy tales, otherwise they’re frightening.
Upstage, Yepikhodov crosses, playing the guitar.
(Musingly.) There goes Yepikhodov...
Anya (musingly). There goes Yepikhodov...
Gayev. The sun has set, ladies and gentlemen.
Trofimov. Yes.
Да.
Gayev (quietly, as if declaiming). O nature, wondrous, you shine with eternal radiance, beautiful and indifferent, you whom we call mother, you unite within yourself being and death, you give life and you destroy...
Varya (imploringly). Uncle dear!
Anya. Uncle, you’re doing it again!
Trofimov. Better pot the yellow into the middle off the cushion.
Gayev. I’m quiet, I’m quiet.
They all sit, lost in thought. Silence. Only Firs can be heard quietly muttering. Suddenly a distant sound is heard, as if from the sky, the sound of a snapped string, dying away, mournful.
Lyubov Andreyevna. What was that?
Lopakhin. I don’t know. Somewhere far off in the mines a bucket must have broken loose. But somewhere very far off.
Gayev. Or perhaps some kind of bird... a heron, maybe.
Trofimov. Or an eagle-owl...
Lyubov Andreyevna (shudders). Somehow unpleasant.
Pause.

Firs. There was the same before the misfortune too: the owl screeched, and the samovar hummed without stopping.
Gayev. Before what misfortune?
Firs. Before the liberation.

Lyubov Andreyevna. You know, friends, let’s go, it’s getting on toward evening. (To Anya.) There are tears in your eyes... What is it, girl? (Embraces her.)
Anya. It’s nothing, mama. Nothing at all.
Trofimov. Someone’s coming.
A Passerby appears, in a shabby white cap and an overcoat; he is slightly drunk.
Passerby. Allow me to ask, can I get through here straight to the station?
Gayev. You can. Go along this road.
Passerby. Deeply grateful to you. (Coughs.) The weather is superb... (Declaiming.) My brother, my suffering brother... go down to the Volga, whose groan... (To Varya.) Mademoiselle, allow a starving Russian thirty kopecks...
Varya, frightened, cries out.
Lopakhin (angrily). Even bad behavior has its proper bounds!
Lyubov Andreyevna (taken aback). Here... take this... (Searches in her purse.) No silver... Never mind, here’s a gold piece for you...
Passerby. Deeply grateful to you! (Exits.)
Laughter.
Varya (frightened). I’ll go... I’ll go away... Oh, mama, at home there’s nothing for people to eat, and you gave him a gold piece.
Lyubov Andreyevna. What’s to be done with me, foolish as I am! I’ll give you everything I have when we get home. Yermolai Alexeyich, will you lend me some more!..
Lopakhin. At your service.
Lyubov Andreyevna. Let’s go, ladies and gentlemen, it’s time. And by the way, Varya, we’ve gone and got you engaged, congratulations.
Varya (through tears). That’s not something to joke about, mama.
Lopakhin. Okhmelia, get thee to a nunnery...
Gayev. And my hands are trembling: it’s been a long time since I played billiards.
Lopakhin. Okhmelia, o nymph, remember me in thy prayers!
Lyubov Andreyevna. Let’s go, ladies and gentlemen. Supper will be soon.
Varya. He gave me such a fright. My heart’s still pounding.
Lopakhin. Let me remind you, ladies and gentlemen: on the twenty-second of August the cherry orchard will be sold. Think about that!.. Think about it!..
All exit except Trofimov and Anya.
Anya (laughing). Thanks to the passerby, he frightened Varya off, now we’re alone.
Trofimov. Varya is afraid that we might fall in love with each other, and so she doesn’t leave our side for whole days at a time. With her narrow mind she can’t understand that we are above love. To get past everything petty and illusory that keeps us from being free and happy — that is the goal and the meaning of our life. Forward! We are moving irresistibly toward the bright star that burns there in the distance! Forward! Don’t fall behind, friends!
Anya (clasping her hands). How well you speak!
Pause.
It’s wonderful here today!
Trofimov. Yes, the weather is marvelous.
Anya. What have you done to me, Petya, that I no longer love the cherry orchard as I used to. I loved it so tenderly, it seemed to me there was no better place on earth than our orchard.
Trofimov. All of Russia is our orchard. The earth is vast and beautiful, and there are many wonderful places on it.

Just think, Anya: your grandfather, your great-grandfather, and all your ancestors were serf-owners, owners of living souls, and can it be that from every cherry in the orchard, from every leaf, from every trunk, human beings are not looking out at you, that you don’t hear their voices... To own living souls — why, that transformed all of you, those who lived before and those living now, so that your mother, you yourself, your uncle no longer notice that you are living on credit, at another’s expense, at the expense of the very people whom you don’t allow past the front hall... We are at least two hundred years behind, we still have nothing at all, no settled relation to the past, we only philosophize, complain of boredom, or drink vodka. It’s so plain that in order to begin living in the present, we must first atone for our past, put an end to it, and it can only be atoned for through suffering, through extraordinary, unceasing labor. Understand this, Anya.
Anya. The house we live in has long since stopped being our house, and I will leave it, I give you my word.
Trofimov. If you have the keys to the household, throw them into the well and go. Be free, like the wind.
Anya (in rapture). How well you said that!
Trofimov. Believe me, Anya, believe me! I’m not yet thirty, I’m young, I’m still a student, but I’ve already endured so much! Come winter, I’m hungry, sick, anxious, poor as a beggar, and — wherever fate hasn’t driven me, wherever I haven’t been! And yet my soul, always, at every moment, day and night, has been full of inexplicable premonitions. I sense happiness coming, Anya, I can already see it...
Anya (musingly). The moon is rising.
Yepikhodov can be heard playing the same mournful song on the guitar. The moon is rising. Somewhere near the poplars Varya is looking for Anya and calling: "Anya! Where are you?"
Trofimov. Yes, the moon is rising.
Pause.
There it is, happiness, there it comes, drawing nearer and nearer, I can already hear its footsteps. And if we don’t see it, don’t come to know it, then what does it matter? Others will see it!
Varya’s voice: "Anya! Where are you?"
That Varya again! (Angrily.) It’s outrageous!
Anya. Well then? Let’s go to the river. It’s nice there.
Trofimov. Let’s go.
They go.
Varya’s voice: "Anya! Anya!"

ACT THREE
A drawing room, separated from the ballroom by an arch. A chandelier is lit. A Jewish orchestra can be heard playing in the entrance hall, the same one mentioned in Act Two. Evening. In the ballroom they are dancing the grand-rond. Simeonov-Pishchik’s voice: "Promenade a une paire!" They come out into the drawing room: in the first pair, Pishchik and Charlotta Ivanovna; in the second, Trofimov and Lyubov Andreyevna; in the third, Anya with the post-office clerk; in the fourth, Varya with the stationmaster, and so on. Varya is quietly crying and, as she dances, wipes away her tears. In the last pair, Dunyasha. They pass through the drawing room, Pishchik shouts: "Grand-rond, balancez!" and "Les cavaliers a genoux et remerciez vos dames" "Promenade in pairs!"... "Grand circle, balance!"... "Gentlemen, on your knees and thank your ladies" (French)..
Голос Симеонова-Пищика: "Promenade a une paire!" и "Les cavaliers a genoux et remerciez vos dames" "Променад парами!"...
Firs, in a tailcoat, carries seltzer water past on a tray. Pishchik and Trofimov come into the drawing room.
Pishchik. I’m full-blooded, I’ve already had two strokes, dancing is hard for me, but, as they say, once you’re in the pack, bark or don’t bark, you’d better wag your tail. My health, though, is like a horse’s. My late father, a joker, God rest him, used to say about our origins that our ancient line of Simeonov-Pishchiks descends, if you please, from that very horse that Caligula seated in the Senate... (Sits down.) But here’s the trouble: no money! A hungry dog believes in nothing but meat... (Snores and immediately wakes up.) Same with me... I can only talk about money...
Trofimov. And there really is something horse-like about your figure.
Pishchik. Well... a horse is a fine animal... A horse can be sold...
Billiards can be heard being played in the next room. Varya appears in the ballroom, under the arch.
Trofimov (teasing). Madame Lopakhina! Madame Lopakhina!..
Varya (angrily). Mangy gentleman!
Trofimov. Yes, I’m a mangy gentleman, and proud of it!
Varya (in bitter reflection). Here we’ve hired musicians, and what are we going to pay them with? (Exits.)
Trofimov (to Pishchik). If the energy that you’ve spent your whole life searching for money to pay your interest had gone into something else instead, you probably could have turned the earth upside down in the end.
Pishchik. Nietzsche... the philosopher... the greatest, the most famous... a man of enormous intellect, says in his writings that it’s possible to make counterfeit money.
Trofimov. And have you read Nietzsche?
Pishchik. Well... Dashenka told me about it. And I’m in such a position now that I might as well make counterfeit money myself... The day after tomorrow I have to pay three hundred and ten rubles... I’ve already got hold of a hundred and thirty... (Pats his pockets, anxiously.) The money’s gone! I’ve lost the money! (Through tears.) Where’s the money? (Joyfully.) Here it is, in the lining... It even threw me into a sweat...
Lyubov Andreyevna and Charlotta Ivanovna enter.
Lyubov Andreyevna (humming a lezginka). Why is Leonid gone so long? What is he doing in town? (To Dunyasha.) Dunyasha, offer the musicians some tea...
Trofimov. The auction most likely didn’t take place.
Lyubov Andreyevna. The musicians came at the wrong time, and we started this ball at the wrong time too... Well, never mind... (Sits down and hums quietly.)
Charlotta (handing Pishchik a deck of cards). Here’s a deck of cards for you, think of any one card.
Pishchik. Done.
Charlotta. Now shuffle the deck. Very good. Give it here, oh my dear Mr. Pishchik. Ein, zwei, drei! Now look, it’s in your side pocket...
Ein, zwei, drei!
Pishchik (takes a card from his side pocket). The eight of spades, absolutely right! (Marveling.) Just imagine!
Charlotta (holding the deck of cards on her palm, to Trofimov). Quick, tell me, which card is on top?
Trofimov. Well? All right, the queen of spades.
Charlotta. There it is! (To Pishchik.) Well? Which card is on top?
Pishchik. The ace of hearts.
Charlotta. There it is!.. (Claps her palm, the deck of cards vanishes.) And what fine weather we’re having today!
A mysterious woman’s voice answers her, as if from beneath the floor: "Oh yes, the weather is splendid, madam." You are just my ideal... Voice: "You too, madam, I liked very much."
Stationmaster (applauding). Bravo, madam ventriloquist!
Pishchik (marveling). Just imagine! Most enchanting Charlotta Ivanovna... I’m simply in love...
Charlotta. In love? (Shrugging.) Can you really love? Guter Mensch, aber schlechter Musikant A good man, but a poor musician (German)..
Trofimov (slapping Pishchik on the shoulder). You old horse, you...
Charlotta. Attention, please, one more trick. (Takes a lap-rug from a chair.) Here’s a very good lap-rug, I wish to sell it... (Shakes it out.) Doesn’t anyone want to buy it?
Pishchik (marveling). Just imagine! Charlotta. Ein, zwei, drei! (Quickly lifts the lowered lap-rug.)
Ein, zwei, drei!
Behind the lap-rug stands Anya; she curtsies, runs to her mother, embraces her, and runs back into the ballroom amid general delight.
Lyubov Andreyevna (applauds). Bravo, bravo!..
Charlotta. Now another one! Ein, zwei, drei!
Ein, zwei, drei!
She lifts the plaid; behind the plaid stands Varya, bowing.
Pishchik (astonished). Just imagine!
Charlotta. The end! (Throws the plaid over Pishchik, curtsies, and runs off into the ballroom.)
Pishchik (hurrying after her). The villainess... what a woman! What a woman! (Goes out.)
Lyubov Andreyevna. And still no Leonid. What is he doing in town all this time, I don’t understand! Surely it’s all decided there by now – the estate sold, or the auction fell through – why keep us so long in the dark!
Varya (trying to comfort her). Uncle bought it, I’m sure of it.
Trofimov (mockingly). Yes.
Да.
Varya. Grandmother sent him power of attorney to buy it in her name, with the debt transferred to her. It’s for Anya’s sake. And I’m sure, God willing, Uncle will buy it.
Lyubov Andreyevna. The Yaroslavl grandmother sent fifteen thousand to buy the estate in her name – she doesn’t trust us – and that sum wouldn’t even cover the interest. (Covers her face with her hands.) Today my fate is being decided, my fate...
Trofimov (teasing Varya). Madame Lopakhina!
Varya (angrily). Eternal student! Already expelled from the university twice.
Lyubov Andreyevna. Why be angry, Varya? So he teases you with Lopakhin, well, what of it? If you want, marry Lopakhin, he’s a good, interesting man. If you don’t want to, don’t; no one is forcing you, my dear...
Varya. I take this matter seriously, Mama, I must speak plainly. He’s a good man, I like him.
Lyubov Andreyevna. Then marry him. What is there to wait for, I don’t understand!
Varya. Mama, I can’t very well propose to him myself. For two years now everyone has been talking to me about him, everyone talks, but he either says nothing or makes a joke of it. I understand. He’s getting rich, he’s busy with his affairs, he has no time for me. If I had money, even a little, even a hundred roubles, I’d throw everything over and go far away. I’d go into a convent.
Trofimov. Sublime!
Varya (to Trofimov). A student ought to have some sense! (Gently, with tears.) How plain you’ve become, Petya, how you’ve aged! (To Lyubov Andreyevna, no longer crying.) It’s just that I can’t do without work, Mama. I need to be doing something every minute.
Yasha enters.
Yasha (barely holding back laughter). Yepikhodov broke a billiard cue!... (Goes out.)
Varya. What is Yepikhodov doing here anyway? Who let him play billiards? I don’t understand these people... (Goes out.)
Lyubov Andreyevna. Don’t tease her, Petya, you can see she’s troubled enough as it is.
Trofimov. She’s altogether too zealous, meddling where it’s not her business. All summer she gave neither me nor Anya any peace, afraid a romance might spring up between us. What business is it of hers? Besides, I never gave any sign of it, I’m so far above vulgarity. We are above love!
Lyubov Andreyevna. And I, it seems, am below love. (In great agitation.) Why isn’t Leonid here? If only I knew whether the estate is sold or not! The misfortune seems so unbelievable to me that I don’t even know what to think, I’m at a loss... I could scream right now... I could do something foolish. Save me, Petya. Say something, say anything...
Trofimov. Whether the estate is sold today or not – what difference does it make? It’s long since finished with, there’s no turning back, the path is overgrown. Calm yourself, dear lady. You mustn’t deceive yourself; for once in your life you must look the truth straight in the eye.
Lyubov Andreyevna. What truth? You can see where the truth is and where the falsehood is, but I seem to have lost my sight, I see nothing. You boldly settle every important question, but tell me, my dear, isn’t it because you’re young, because you haven’t yet had time to suffer through even one of your own questions? You look boldly ahead, and isn’t it because you don’t see and don’t expect anything dreadful, since life is still hidden from your young eyes? You are bolder, more honest, deeper than we are, but think it over, be generous just the width of a fingertip, spare me. I was born here, you know, my father and mother lived here, my grandfather, I love this house, without the cherry orchard I don’t understand my life, and if it really must be sold, then sell me along with the orchard... (Embraces Trofimov, kisses him on the forehead.) My son drowned here, you know... (Weeps.) Have pity on me, good, kind man.
Trofimov. You know I sympathize with all my soul.
Lyubov Andreyevna. But it should be said differently, differently... (Takes out a handkerchief; a telegram falls to the floor.) My heart is heavy today, you can’t imagine. Everything here is noisy for me, my soul trembles at every sound, I’m trembling all over, and yet I can’t go to my room, I’m afraid to be alone in the quiet. Don’t judge me, Petya... I love you as my own. I’d gladly give you Anya, I swear it, only, my dear, you must study, you must finish your course. You do nothing, fate simply tosses you from place to place, it’s so strange... Isn’t it true? Yes? And you really must do something about that beard, so it would grow somehow or other... (Laughs.) You’re a funny one!
Trofimov (picks up the telegram). I have no wish to be a handsome man.
Lyubov Andreyevna. This is a telegram from Paris. I get one every day. Yesterday, and today too. That wild man has fallen ill again, things are bad with him again... He begs my forgiveness, implores me to come, and truly I ought to go to Paris, to be near him. You have a stern face, Petya, but what’s to be done, my dear, what am I to do, he’s sick, he’s alone, unhappy, and who’s there to look after him, who will keep him from his mistakes, who will give him his medicine in time? And why hide it or stay silent about it – I love him, that’s clear. I love him, I love him... He’s a stone around my neck, I’m going to the bottom with him, but I love that stone and cannot live without it. (Presses Trofimov’s hand.) Don’t think ill of me, Petya, don’t say anything to me, don’t say it...
Trofimov (through tears). Forgive my frankness, for God’s sake: he robbed you clean!
Lyubov Andreyevna. No, no, no, you mustn’t say that... (Covers her ears.)
Trofimov. He’s a scoundrel, you’re the only one who doesn’t know it! He’s a petty scoundrel, a nonentity...
Lyubov Andreyevna (growing angry, but restrained). You’re twenty-six or twenty-seven years old, and you’re still a second-form schoolboy!
Trofimov. Let it be so!
Lyubov Andreyevna. You must be a man, at your age you must understand those who love. And you must love yourself... you must fall in love! (Angrily.) Yes, yes! And you have no purity in you, you’re simply a prude, a funny crank, a freak...
Trofimov (in horror). What is she saying!
Lyubov Andreyevna. "I am above love!" You are not above love, you’re simply, as our Firs puts it, a fumbler. At your age, not to have a mistress!...
Trofimov (in horror). This is dreadful! What is she saying?! (Walks quickly toward the ballroom, clutching his head.) This is dreadful... I can’t bear it, I’m leaving... (Goes out, but returns at once.) Everything between us is finished! (Goes out into the front hall.)
Lyubov Andreyevna (calling after him). Petya, wait! You funny man, I was joking! Petya!
Someone can be heard running quickly down the stairs in the front hall and suddenly tumbling down with a crash. Anya and Varya cry out, but at once laughter is heard.
What’s that?
Anya runs in.
Anya (laughing). Petya fell down the stairs! (Runs out.)
Lyubov Andreyevna. What a strange fellow that Petya is...
The stationmaster stops in the middle of the ballroom and begins to read A. Tolstoy’s "The Sinner." They listen to him, but no sooner has he read a few lines than the sounds of a waltz come from the front hall, and the reading breaks off. Everyone dances. Trofimov, Anya, Varya, and Lyubov Andreyevna cross over from the front hall.
Well, Petya... you pure soul... I beg your pardon... Let’s go dance... (Dances with Petya.)
Anya and Varya dance.
Firs enters, sets his cane down by the side door.
Yasha has also come in from the drawing room, watching the dancing.
Yasha. Well, old man?
Firs. I’m not feeling well. In the old days, generals, barons, admirals danced at our balls, and now we send for the post-office clerk and the stationmaster, and even they come unwillingly. I’ve grown weak somehow. The old master, grandfather, treated everyone with sealing wax, for every illness. I’ve been taking sealing wax every day for twenty years now, maybe more; perhaps that’s what’s kept me alive.
Yasha. You bore me, old man. (Yawns.) I wish you’d hurry up and die already.
Firs. Ah, you... you fumbler! (Mutters.)
Trofimov and Lyubov Andreyevna dance in the ballroom, then in the drawing room.
Lyubov Andreyevna. Merci! I’ll sit down for a while... (Sits.) I’m tired.
Merci!
Anya enters.
Anya (agitated). Just now in the kitchen some man was saying the cherry orchard was sold today.
Lyubov Andreyevna. Sold to whom?
Anya. He didn’t say to whom. He left. (Dances with Trofimov; the two go off into the ballroom.)
Yasha. That was some old man babbling. A stranger.
Firs. And Leonid Andreyich still isn’t here, hasn’t come back. He’s wearing his light coat, the between-seasons one, he’ll catch cold before you know it. Ah, young and green.
Lyubov Andreyevna. I could die right now. Go, Yasha, find out to whom it was sold.
Yasha. But he left long ago, that old man. (Laughs.)
Lyubov Andreyevna (with mild annoyance). Well, what are you laughing at? What’s there to be glad about?
Yasha. It’s just that Yepikhodov is so funny. An empty-headed man. Two-and-Twenty Misfortunes.
Lyubov Andreyevna. Firs, if they sell the estate, where will you go?
Firs. Wherever you tell me, that’s where I’ll go.
Lyubov Andreyevna. Why does your face look like that? Aren’t you well? You should go to bed, you know...
Firs. Yes... (With a wry smile.) I’ll go off to bed, and without me who’ll serve, who’ll see to things here? I’m the only one for the whole house.
Yasha (to Lyubov Andreyevna). Lyubov Andreyevna! Allow me to trouble you with a request, be so kind! If you go to Paris again, take me with you, do me that favor. It’s absolutely impossible for me to stay here. (Glancing around, in a low voice.) Well, what’s there to say, you can see for yourself, an uncivilized country, an immoral people, and besides it’s tedious, they feed us disgracefully in the kitchen, and on top of it there’s this Firs wandering about, muttering all sorts of unsuitable words. Take me with you, be so kind!
Pishchik enters.
Pishchik. Allow me to ask you... for a little waltz, most lovely lady... (Lyubov Andreyevna goes with him.) Enchanting creature, I really must take a hundred and eighty little roubles from you all the same... I’ll take them... (Dances.) A hundred and eighty little roubles...
They have passed into the ballroom.
Yasha (softly humming). "Will you understand the turmoil of my soul..."
In the ballroom a figure in a gray top hat and checked trousers waves its arms and jumps about; cries of: "Bravo, Charlotta Ivanovna!"
Dunyasha (stopping to powder her face). The young mistress tells me to dance – there are many gentlemen and few ladies – and dancing makes my head spin, my heart pounds, Firs Nikolayevich, and just now the clerk from the post office said something to me that quite took my breath away.
The music dies down.
Firs. Well, what did he say to you?
Dunyasha. He says, you’re like a flower.
Yasha (yawning). Ignorance... (Goes out.)
Dunyasha. Like a flower... I’m such a delicate girl, I love tender words terribly.
Firs. You’ll spin yourself silly.
Yepikhodov enters.
Yepikhodov. You, Avdotya Fyodorovna, don’t wish to see me... as though I were some kind of insect. (Sighs.) Ah, life!
Dunyasha. What do you want?
Yepikhodov. Undoubtedly, perhaps you’re right. (Sighs.) But, of course, if one looks at it from a certain point of view, then you, if I may put it that way, forgive my frankness, have thoroughly reduced me to a certain state of mind. I know my fortune, some misfortune befalls me every day, and I’ve long since grown used to it, so that I look upon my fate with a smile. You gave me your word, and although I...
Dunyasha. Please, we’ll talk later, but now leave me in peace. Just now I’m dreaming. (Plays with her fan.)
Yepikhodov. I have a misfortune every day, and I, if I may put it that way, merely smile, even laugh.
Varya enters from the ballroom.
Varya. Still haven’t gone, Semyon? What a disrespectful man you really are. (To Dunyasha.) Go on, off with you, Dunyasha. (To Yepikhodov.) First you play billiards and break a cue, then you go strolling through the drawing room like a guest.
Yepikhodov. You cannot, if I may say so, call me to account.
Varya. I’m not calling you to account, I’m telling you. All you know how to do is wander from place to place, and you never attend to your work. We keep a clerk, and for what purpose, no one knows.
Yepikhodov (offended). Whether I work, or walk about, or eat, or play billiards, that is a matter only understanding people, and my elders, may judge.
Varya. You dare say that to me! (Flaring up.) You dare? So I understand nothing, is that it? Get out of here this instant! This very minute!
Yepikhodov (frightened). I beg you to express yourself in a delicate manner.
Varya (beside herself). Out of here this very minute! Out!
He goes toward the door, she after him.
Two-and-twenty misfortunes! Let there be no trace of you here! Let my eyes never see you again!
Yepikhodov has gone out; from behind the door his voice: "I shall complain about you."
Ah, you’re coming back? (Snatches up the cane Firs had set by the door.) Come on... Come on... Come on, I’ll show you... Ah, you’re coming? Coming? Well then, take this... (Swings the cane.)
At this moment Lopakhin enters.
Lopakhin. Much obliged to you, I’m sure.
Varya (angrily and mockingly). My mistake!
Lopakhin. It’s nothing, sir. Much obliged for the pleasant welcome.
Varya. Don’t mention it. (Moves away, then glances back and asks gently.) I didn’t hurt you, did I?
Lopakhin. No, it’s nothing. There’ll be an enormous bump, though.
Voices in the ballroom: "Lopakhin has arrived! Yermolai Alexeyich!"
Pishchik. Sight to see, tale to tell... (Kisses Lopakhin.) You smell of cognac, my dear fellow, my dear soul. Well, we’re having a merry time here too.
Lyubov Andreyevna enters.
Lyubov Andreyevna. Is that you, Yermolai Alexeyich? Why so long? Where is Leonid?
Lopakhin. Leonid Andreyich came with me, he’s coming...
Lyubov Andreyevna (agitated). Well, what? Was there a sale? Speak, then!
Lopakhin (embarrassed, afraid to show his joy). The sale was over by four o’clock... We missed the train, had to wait till half past nine. (Sighing heavily.) Ugh! My head’s spinning a little...
Gayev enters; in his right hand he has parcels, with his left he wipes away tears.
Lyubov Andreyevna. Lyonya, what is it? Lyonya, well? (Impatiently, with tears.) Quickly, for God’s sake...
Gayev (says nothing to her, only waves his hand; to Firs, weeping). Here, take this... Here’s anchovies, Kerch herring... I haven’t eaten a thing today... What I’ve suffered!
The door to the billiard room is open; the click of balls can be heard, and Yasha’s voice: "Seven and eighteen!" Gayev’s expression changes, he is no longer crying.
I’m terribly tired. Help me change, Firs. (Goes off to his room through the hall, Firs following him.)
Pishchik. What happened at the sale? Tell us! Lyubov Andreyevna. Was the cherry orchard sold?
Lopakhin. It was sold.
Lyubov Andreyevna. Who bought it?
Lopakhin. I bought it.
Pause.
Lyubov Andreyevna is crushed; she would fall if she were not standing beside the armchair and table. Varya takes the keys from her belt, throws them on the floor in the middle of the drawing room, and goes out.
I bought it! Wait, ladies and gentlemen, do me a kindness, my head’s gone cloudy, I can’t speak... (Laughs.) We came to the auction, and Deriganov was already there. Leonid Andreyich only had fifteen thousand, and Deriganov, on top of the debt, offered thirty straight off. I saw how things stood, I went at him, offered forty. He said forty-five. I said fifty-five. So he kept adding five, and I added ten... Well, it ended. On top of the debt I offered ninety, and it was left to me. The cherry orchard is mine now! Mine! (Laughs loudly.) My God, Lord, the cherry orchard is mine! Tell me I’m drunk, out of my mind, that all this is just my fancy... (Stamps his feet.) Don’t laugh at me! If my father and my grandfather could rise from their graves and look at the whole affair, how their Yermolai, beaten, half-literate Yermolai, who used to run about barefoot in winter, how this very Yermolai bought an estate more beautiful than anything in the world. I’ve bought the estate where my father and grandfather were slaves, where they weren’t even allowed into the kitchen. I’m asleep, this is only a dream, it only seems so... It’s a figment of your imagination, wrapped in the darkness of the unknown... (Picks up the keys, smiling tenderly.) She threw down the keys, wants to show she isn’t mistress here any longer... (Jingles the keys.) Well, no matter.
The orchestra can be heard tuning up.
Hey, musicians, play, I want to hear you! Come, everyone, come and watch Yermolai Lopakhin take an axe to the cherry orchard, watch the trees fall to the ground! We’ll put up summer cottages, and our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will see a new life here... Music, play!
The music plays, Lyubov Andreyevna has sunk into a chair and weeps bitterly.
(Reproachfully.) Why, why didn’t you listen to me? My poor, dear one, there’s no bringing it back now. (With tears.) Oh, if only all this could pass quickly, if only our awkward, unhappy life could somehow change.
Pishchik (takes him by the arm, in an undertone). She’s crying. Let’s go into the hall, let her be alone... Come along...
(Takes him by the arm and leads him into the hall.)
Lopakhin. What of it? Music, play properly! Let everything be as I wish! (Ironically.) Here comes the new landowner, the master of the cherry orchard! (Accidentally jostles a little table, nearly knocks over the candelabra.) I can pay for everything! (Goes out with Pishchik.)
There is no one left in the hall and drawing room except Lyubov Andreyevna, who sits huddled up, weeping bitterly. The music plays softly. Anya and Trofimov come in quickly. Anya goes up to her mother and kneels before her. Trofimov remains by the entrance to the hall.
Anya. Mama!... Mama, you’re crying? My dear, kind, good mama, my beautiful one, I love you... I bless you. The cherry orchard is sold, it’s gone now, that’s true, it’s true, but don’t cry, mama, you still have your life ahead of you, you still have your good, pure soul... Come with me, come, my dear, come away from here!... We’ll plant a new orchard, more splendid than this one, you’ll see it, you’ll understand, and joy, quiet, deep joy will settle on your soul, like the sun at evening, and you’ll smile, mama! Come, my dear! Come!...
Curtain
ACT FOUR
The setting of the first act. There are no curtains on the windows, no pictures, what little furniture remains has been stacked in one corner as if for sale. A sense of emptiness. Near the outer door and at the back of the stage are stacked suitcases, travelling bundles, and the like. On the left the door is open, from there the voices of Varya and Anya can be heard. Lopakhin stands waiting. Yasha holds a tray with little glasses filled with champagne. In the front hall Yepikhodov is tying up a crate. From offstage, at the back, a hum of voices. These are the peasants who have come to say goodbye.
Gayev’s voice: "Thank you, my friends, thank you."
Yasha. Simple folk have come to say goodbye. In my opinion, Yermolai Alexeyich, they’re good people, but they don’t understand much.
The hum dies down. Lyubov Andreyevna and Gayev come in through the front hall; she is not crying, but she is pale, her face trembling, she cannot speak.
Gayev. You gave them your purse, Lyuba. That won’t do! That won’t do!
Lyubov Andreyevna. I couldn’t help it! I couldn’t help it!
Both go out.
Lopakhin (in the doorway, calling after them). Please, I humbly beg you! A glass each, for the road. I didn’t think to bring any from town, and at the station I could only find one bottle. Please!
Pause.
Well, ladies and gentlemen! Don’t you want any? (Steps away from the door.) If I’d known, I wouldn’t have bought it. Well, then I won’t drink either.
Yasha carefully sets the tray down on a chair.
Drink up, Yasha, at least you.
Yasha. To those departing! Good luck to those who stay! (Drinks.) This champagne isn’t the real thing, I can assure you.
Lopakhin. Eight roubles a bottle.
Pause.
It’s devilishly cold in here.
Yasha. They didn’t heat it today, since we’re leaving anyway. (Laughs.)
Lopakhin. What’s that for?
Yasha. From pleasure.
Lopakhin. It’s October out there, but sunny and calm as summer. Good weather for building. (Glancing at his watch, through the door.) Ladies and gentlemen, bear in mind, there’s only forty-six minutes left till the train! So we leave for the station in twenty minutes. Hurry up.
Trofimov, in an overcoat, comes in from outside.
Trofimov. I think it must be time to go. The horses are ready. The devil only knows where my galoshes are. They’ve vanished. (Through the door.) Anya, my galoshes aren’t here! I can’t find them!
Lopakhin. And I have to go to Kharkov. I’ll travel on the same train as you. I’ll spend the whole winter in Kharkov. I’ve been hanging about with all of you, worn out from idleness. I can’t do without work, I don’t know what to do with my hands; they dangle about somehow strangely, as if they belonged to someone else.
Trofimov. We’ll be leaving in a moment, and you’ll go back to your useful labors again.
Lopakhin. Have a glass.
Trofimov. I won’t.
Lopakhin. So, off to Moscow now?
Trofimov. Yes, I’ll see them into town, and tomorrow to Moscow.
Lopakhin. Yes... Well, I suppose the professors aren’t giving their lectures, waiting for you to show up, no doubt!
Trofimov. That’s none of your business.
Lopakhin. How many years is it now you’ve been studying at the university?
Trofimov. Think of something newer. That’s stale and flat. (Searches for his galoshes.) You know, we’ll likely never see each other again, so let me give you one piece of parting advice: don’t wave your arms about! Break yourself of that habit – waving them about. And this business too, of building summer cottages, of reckoning that in time the summer tenants will become individual landowners, reckoning like that – that’s also a kind of arm-waving... Still, all the same, I’m fond of you. You have fine, delicate fingers, like an artist’s, you have a fine, delicate soul...
Lopakhin (embraces him). Farewell, my dear fellow. Thank you for everything. If you need it, take some money from me for the journey.
Trofimov. What for? I don’t need it.
Lopakhin. But you haven’t any!
Trofimov. I have. Thank you. I got paid for a translation. Here it is, right here, in my pocket. (Anxiously.) But my galoshes aren’t here!
Varya (from another room). Take your filthy things! (Throws a pair of rubber galoshes onto the stage.)
Trofimov. Now why are you so angry, Varya? Hm... But these aren’t my galoshes!
Lopakhin. This spring I sowed a thousand acres of poppies, and now I’ve cleared forty thousand net. And when my poppies were in bloom, what a picture that was! So there, I say, I’ve cleared forty thousand, and so I’m offering you a loan, because I can afford it. Why turn up your nose? I’m a peasant... plain and simple.
Trofimov. Your father was a peasant, mine was a chemist, and nothing whatsoever follows from that.
Lopakhin takes out his wallet.
Leave it, leave it... Even if you gave me two hundred thousand, I wouldn’t take it. I am a free man. And everything that all of you, rich and poor alike, hold so dear and so precious, has not the slightest power over me, no more than a bit of fluff drifting in the air. I can manage without you, I can walk right past you, I am strong and proud. Humanity is moving toward the highest truth, toward the highest happiness possible on earth, and I am in the front ranks!
Lopakhin. Will you get there?
Trofimov. I’ll get there.
Pause.
I’ll get there, or I’ll show others the way to get there.
The sound of an axe striking a tree can be heard in the distance.
Lopakhin. Well, farewell, my dear fellow. Time to go. We turn up our noses at one another, and meanwhile life just goes on passing by. When I work for a long stretch, without tiring, then my thoughts are lighter, and it seems as though I too know what I exist for. But how many people there are in Russia, brother, who exist for no one knows what. Well, no matter, that’s not what makes the wheels turn. Leonid Andreyich, they say, has taken a position, he’ll be at the bank, six thousand a year... Only he won’t sit still, he’s much too lazy...
Anya (in the doorway). Mama asks that, until she’s gone, they not cut down the orchard.
Trofimov. Really, is there truly not enough tact for that... (Goes out through the front hall.)
Lopakhin. At once, at once... What people, really. (Goes out after him.)
Anya. Was Firs sent to the hospital?
Yasha. I said so this morning. He was sent, I should think.
Anya (to Yepikhodov, who is crossing the hall). Semyon Panteleyich, please find out whether Firs was taken to the hospital.
Yasha (offended). I told Yegor this morning. Why ask ten times over!
Yepikhodov. In my final opinion, long-lived Firs is past repairing, he ought to go join his forefathers. And I can only envy him. (Sets his suitcase down on a hatbox and crushes it.) Well, there, of course. I knew it. (Goes out.)
Yasha (mockingly). Twenty-two misfortunes...
Varya (behind the door). Was Firs taken to the hospital?
Anya. He was.
Varya. Then why didn’t they take the letter for the doctor?
Anya. It will have to be sent on after them... (Goes out.)
Varya (from the next room). Where’s Yasha? Tell him his mother has come, she wants to say goodbye to him.
Yasha (waves his hand). They’ll try anyone’s patience.
Dunyasha has been busy the whole time with the things; now, seeing Yasha alone, she comes up to him.
Dunyasha. You might at least look at me once, Yasha. You’re leaving... you’re abandoning me... (Weeps and throws herself on his neck.)
Yasha. What is there to cry about? (Drinks champagne.) In six days I’ll be back in Paris. Tomorrow we’ll board the express and off we’ll roll, and that’s the last you’ll see of us. It hardly seems real, even. Vive la France!... Long live France!... (French: Vive la France!) It’s not for me here, I can’t live here... there’s nothing to be done about it. I’ve seen enough ignorance – that’s plenty for me. (Drinks champagne.) What is there to cry about? Behave decently, and then you won’t have to cry.
Vive la France!)
Dunyasha (powders her face, looking in a small mirror). Send me a letter from Paris. After all, I loved you, Yasha, I loved you so! I’m a tender creature, Yasha!
Yasha. Someone’s coming. (Busies himself with the suitcases, humming quietly.)
Lyubov Andreyevna, Gayev, Anya, and Charlotta Ivanovna enter.
Gayev. We really ought to be going. There isn’t much time left. (Looking at Yasha.) Who is it that smells of herring!
Lyubov Andreyevna. In about ten minutes let’s already be getting into the carriages... (Looks around the room.) Farewell, dear house, old grandfather. Winter will pass, spring will come, and by then you won’t be here any more, they’ll tear you down. How much these walls have seen! (Kisses her daughter warmly.) My treasure, you’re radiant, your eyes are sparkling like two diamonds. Are you glad? Very?
Anya. Very! A new life is beginning, mama!
Gayev (cheerfully). Indeed, everything is fine now. Before the sale of the cherry orchard we were all anxious, all suffering, but then, once the matter was settled once and for all, beyond recall, everyone calmed down, even grew cheerful... I’m a bank official now, a financier... yellow into the middle pocket, and you, Lyuba, whatever else, you’re looking better, that’s certain.
Lyubov Andreyevna. Yes. My nerves are better, that’s true.
They bring her hat and coat.
I sleep well. Carry out my things, Yasha. It’s time. (To Anya.) My little girl, soon we’ll see each other again... I’m going to Paris, I’ll live there on the money your Yaroslavl grandmother sent to buy the estate – long live grandmother! – though that money won’t last long.
Anya. You’ll come back soon, mama, soon... won’t you? I’ll prepare myself, I’ll pass the examination at school, and then I’ll work, I’ll help you. We’ll read all kinds of books together, mama... won’t we? (Kisses her mother’s hands.) We’ll read on the autumn evenings, we’ll read many books, and a new, wonderful world will open up before us... (Dreamily.) Mama, come back...
Lyubov Andreyevna. I’ll come, my precious one. (Embraces her daughter.)
Lopakhin enters. Charlotta hums a little song softly.
Gayev. Lucky Charlotta – singing!
Charlotta (picking up a bundle that looks like a swaddled baby). My little baby, hush, hush...
A baby’s cry is heard: "Wah, wah!..."
Hush now, my good one, my dear little boy.
"Wah!... wah!..."
I feel so sorry for you! (Tosses the bundle back in its place.) So please, do find me a position. I can’t go on like this.
Lopakhin. We’ll find one, Charlotta Ivanovna, don’t worry.
Gayev. Everyone is abandoning us – Varya is leaving... we’ve suddenly become unneeded.
Charlotta. I’ve nowhere to live in town. I must be off... (Hums.) It’s all the same...
Pishchik enters.
Lopakhin. A wonder of nature!...
Pishchik (out of breath). Oh, let me catch my breath... I’m worn out... my most esteemed friends... give me some water...
Gayev. After money, no doubt? Your humble servant – I’ll get out of harm’s way... (Exits.)
Pishchik. Haven’t been to see you in a good while... most lovely lady... (To Lopakhin.) You’re here... glad to see you... a man of the most enormous intellect... here, take this... take it... (Hands Lopakhin money.) Four hundred rubles... I still owe eight hundred and forty...
Lopakhin (shrugging in bewilderment). Just like a dream... Where did you get it?
Pishchik. Wait... it’s hot... A most extraordinary event. Some Englishmen came to see me and found some sort of white clay in the ground... (To Lyubov Andreyevna.) And four hundred for you... lovely lady... marvelous... (Hands over money.) The rest later. (Drinks water.) Just now a young man on the train was telling how some... great philosopher advises jumping off roofs... "Jump!" he says, and that’s the whole answer. (Astonished.) Just think of it! Water!...
Lopakhin. What Englishmen are these?
Pishchik. I leased them the plot with the clay for twenty-four years... And now, forgive me, no time... must gallop on... I’m off to Znoykov’s... to Kardamonov’s... I owe everyone... (Drinks.) Wishing you well... I’ll stop by Thursday...
Lyubov Andreyevna. We’re moving into town this very moment, and tomorrow I go abroad.
Pishchik. What? (Alarmed.) Why into town? So that’s why I see the furniture... the trunks... Well, no matter... (Through tears.) No matter... People of the greatest intellect... these Englishmen... No matter... Be happy... God will help you... No matter... Everything in this world comes to an end... (Kisses Lyubov Andreyevna’s hand.) And if word ever reaches you that my end has come, remember this very... horse, and say: "There once lived such a fellow... Simeonov-Pishchik... God rest his soul"... Most remarkable weather... Yes... (Exits in great confusion, but at once returns and speaks from the doorway.) Dashenka sends her regards! (Exits.)
Lyubov Andreyevna. Now one may sigh. I’m leaving with two worries. The first is poor sick Firs. (Glancing at her watch.) There are still about five minutes...
Anya. Mama, Firs has already been sent to the hospital. Yasha sent him off this morning.
Lyubov Andreyevna. My second sorrow is Varya. She’s used to rising early and working, and now, without work, she’s like a fish out of water. She’s grown thin, pale, and she cries, poor thing...
Pause.
You know this very well, Yermolai Alexeyich; I dreamed... of marrying her to you, and by every sign it looked as though you would marry her. (Whispers to Anya, who nods to Charlotta, and both exit.) She loves you, you’re to her liking, and I don’t know, I don’t know why it is you two seem to keep clear of one another. I don’t understand it!
Lopakhin. I confess I don’t understand it myself. It’s all rather strange somehow... If there’s still time, I’m ready even now... Let’s finish it at once and be done, but without you I feel I won’t manage to propose.
Lyubov Andreyevna. And splendid. It only takes a minute, after all. I’ll call her right now...
Lopakhin. And there’s champagne handy, too. (Looking at the glasses.) Empty – somebody’s already drunk it.
Yasha coughs.
That’s what’s called lapping it up...
Lyubov Andreyevna (animated). Splendid. We’ll step out... Yasha, allez! I’ll call her... (Through the door.) Varya, leave everything, come here. Come! (Exits with Yasha.)
Lopakhin (glancing at his watch). Yes...
Pause.
Behind the door, restrained laughter, whispering; at last Varya enters.
Varya (examining the belongings for a long while). Strange, I simply can’t find it...
Lopakhin. What are you looking for?
Varya. I packed it myself and now I don’t remember where.
Pause.
Lopakhin. Where are you off to now, Varvara Mikhailovna?
Varya. Me? To the Ragulins’... I’ve arranged to keep house for them... as a housekeeper, more or less.
Lopakhin. That’s out at Yashnevo? Must be seventy versts.
Pause.
So life in this house has come to an end...
Varya (looking over the belongings). Now where can it be... Or maybe I packed it in the trunk... Yes, life in this house has ended... it won’t come again...
Lopakhin. And I’m off to Kharkov now myself... on this very train. A great deal of business. I’m leaving Yepikhodov here on the grounds... I’ve taken him on.
Varya. Well, then!
Lopakhin. Last year at this time it was already snowing, if you recall, but now it’s calm and sunny. Only rather cold... About three degrees of frost.
Varya. I didn’t look.
Pause.
And besides, our thermometer is broken...
Pause.
A voice through the door from the yard: "Yermolai Alexeyich!..."
Lopakhin (as though he had long been waiting for that call). This minute! (Exits quickly.)
Varya, sitting on the floor with her head on a bundle of clothes, weeps quietly. The door opens; Lyubov Andreyevna enters cautiously.
Lyubov Andreyevna. Well?
Что?
Pause.
We must go.
Varya (no longer crying, having wiped her eyes). Yes, it’s time, mama. I’ll get to the Ragulins’ today, if only I don’t miss the train...
Lyubov Andreyevna (through the door). Anya, get dressed!
Anya enters, then Gayev, then Charlotta Ivanovna. Gayev wears a warm coat with a hood. The servants and cab drivers gather. Yepikhodov bustles about the luggage.
Now we can be on our way.
Anya (joyfully). On our way!
Gayev. My friends, my dear, precious friends! In leaving this house forever, can I hold my tongue, can I keep from voicing, at this parting, the feelings that now fill my whole being...
Anya (pleading). Uncle!
Varya. Uncle dear, don’t!
Gayev (dejectedly). Double the yellow into the middle pocket... I’ll be silent...
Trofimov enters, then Lopakhin.
Trofimov. Well then, ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to go!
Lopakhin. Yepikhodov, my coat!
Lyubov Andreyevna. I’ll sit just one more minute. It’s as if I never before saw what walls, what ceilings this house has, and now I look at them so hungrily, with such tender love...
Gayev. I remember, when I was six years old, on Trinity Sunday, I sat in this very window and watched my father walking to church...
Lyubov Andreyevna. Has everything been taken?
Lopakhin. I think so, everything. (To Yepikhodov, putting on his coat.) Now, Yepikhodov, see that everything’s kept in order.
Yepikhodov (speaking in a hoarse voice). Rest assured, Yermolai Alexeyich!
Lopakhin. What’s the matter with your voice?
Yepikhodov. Just now I drank some water, swallowed something wrong.
Yasha (contemptuously). Such ignorance...
Lyubov Andreyevna. We’ll leave, and not a soul will remain here...
Lopakhin. Until spring.
Varya pulls an umbrella out of a bundle, as though about to swing it.
Lopakhin makes as if he is frightened.
What is it, what is it... I never meant anything by it.
Trofimov. Ladies and gentlemen, let’s go and get into the carriages... It’s time! The train will be here any moment!
Varya. Petya, here are your galoshes, by the trunk. (Through tears.) And how dirty and worn they’ve become...
Trofimov (putting on the galoshes). Let’s go, everyone!...
Gayev (deeply distressed, afraid he will cry). The train... the station... Cross the middle, double the white into the corner pocket...
Lyubov Andreyevna. Let’s go!
Lopakhin. Is everyone here? No one left inside? (Locks the side door on the left.) The things are stored in here, it needs locking up. Let’s go!...
Anya. Farewell, house! Farewell, old life!
Trofimov. Welcome, new life!... (Exits with Anya.)
Varya casts a glance around the room and leaves unhurriedly. Yasha and Charlotta exit with the little dog.
Lopakhin. Until spring, then. Out you go, everyone... So long!... (Exits.)
Lyubov Andreyevna and Gayev are left alone. As if they had been waiting for precisely this, they throw themselves into each other’s arms and sob, restrained and quiet, afraid of being overheard.
Gayev (in despair). My sister, my sister...
Lyubov Andreyevna. Oh my dear, my tender, my beautiful orchard!... My life, my youth, my happiness, farewell!... Farewell!...
Anya’s voice (cheerful, calling out): "Mama!..."
Trofimov’s voice (cheerful, excited): "Halloo!..."
To look one last time at the walls, at the windows... Our late mother loved to walk about this very room...
Gayev. My sister, my sister!...
Anya’s voice: "Mama!..."
Trofimov’s voice: "Halloo!..."
Lyubov Andreyevna. We’re coming!...
They exit.
The stage is empty. The sound of all the doors being locked can be heard, and then the carriages driving off. It grows quiet. Amid the silence comes the dull knock of an axe against wood, sounding lonely and sorrowful.
Footsteps are heard. From the door on the right, Firs appears. He is dressed, as always, in a jacket and white waistcoat, with slippers on his feet. He is ill.
Firs (goes up to the door, touches the handle). Locked. They’ve gone... (Sits down on the sofa.) Forgot all about me... No matter... I’ll just sit here a while... And Leonid Andreyich, I’ll wager, didn’t put on his fur coat – went off in just his overcoat... (Sighs anxiously.) I didn’t see to it myself... So young, so green! (Mutters something unintelligible.) As for life – it’s gone by, and it’s as if I never even lived it at all... (Lies down.) I’ll lie down a bit... There’s no strength left in you, nothing left at all, nothing... Ah, you... you old fumbler!... (Lies motionless.)
A distant sound is heard, as though from the sky, the sound of a snapped string, dying away, mournful. Silence falls, and all that can be heard is an axe, far off in the orchard, striking against wood.
