A young peasant from the village of Rovnoye who joins the wagon train's campfire for a night, newly and radiantly happily married and unable to speak of anything but his wife; his uncomplicated joy stands in sharp, deliberate contrast to the bored, quarrelsome mood otherwise hanging over the drivers on the eve of the novella's thunderstorm. A fictional character of "The Steppe," not a real person.
