A decrepit, disgraced sixty-five-year-old priest under diocesan investigation for drunkenness and alleged sale of false certificates; overstays his visit to the archpriest out of loneliness and shame, and later, drunk on the deacon's vodka, is the story's lone voice arguing for mercy toward the deacon's estranged son.
