A Russian gold coin (plural chervontsy); by the mid-19th century the term was used loosely for a ten-ruble gold piece. The colonel boasts of winning five chervontsy at cards from the steward on the night of the blizzard, part of his self-portrait as a lucky, free-spending young officer.
