Headnote
1 Written in Moscow on 6 January 1888 to Maria Vladimirovna Kiseleva, a family friend, fellow writer, and the Chekhovs’ host at their summer estate of Babkino. Kiseleva wrote children’s stories for the journal "Rodnik" (edited by a woman Chekhov nicknames "Sysoikha," playing off the name of its previous editor, whom he nicknames "Yashenka"), and this letter is chiefly literary business: congratulating her on the acceptance of her story "Larka," coaching her – half in earnest, half in jest – on how to negotiate a higher fee from the editor, and urging her to keep writing for the journal.
2 The letter closes with news of the Chekhovs’ journey home from a visit to Kiseleva’s estate, an elaborate mock-formal menu for an upcoming dinner party (sturgeon selyanka, pheasant, several named wines), and closing greetings to members of the Kiseleva household, including the housekeeper Vasilisa and household members Chekhov calls "Gripp" and "the Permanent Member." The comic exaggeration – "psychopaths,luminary," the mock book-jacket credit for "Larka" – is characteristic of Chekhov’s bantering correspondence with Kiseleva.

I am sending you a letter concerning you and your literary activity. So, it seems, in the new year you will be corresponding no longer with the overboiled Yashenka, but with the thunderous Sysoikha. Now I may boldly congratulate you: happy New Year, happy new fortune, happy new psychopaths! I am glad for "Larka"... Its success, of course, I put down not so much to its doubtful literary merits as to the patronage of such a luminary as myself... It will be printed in March, with the following heading: ""Larka the Hercules" (printed through the patronage of A. P. Chekhov)." Without what is in the parentheses, the story will lose all its savor. Now you and your whole household may judge how little you valued me!!!
Посылаю Вам письмо, которое касается Вас и Вашей литературной деятельности. Итак, значит, в новом году Вы будете вести переписку уж не с переваренной Яшенькой, а с гремучей Сысоихой. Теперь я смело могу поздравить Вас: с Новым годом, с новым счастьем, с новыми психопатками! Я рад за "Ларьку"... Успех его, конечно, я объясняю не столько его сомнительными литературными достоинствами, сколько протекцией такого светила, как я... Будет он напечатан в марте и с таким оглавлением: ""Ларька-Теркулес" (напечатан по протекции А. П. Чехова)". Без того, что в скобках, рассказ потеряет всю свою соль. Теперь Вы и Ваше семейство можете судить, как Вы мало меня ценили!!!
Furthermore, for the Creator’s sake, do not neglect the following advice. Ask Sysoikha no less than 50 rubles a sheet. I implore you! For once in your life, do me this honor! If she, whimpering psychopathically and wagging her bustle in her letter, complains of poverty and offers you 30–40 rubles, then, for the sake of all that is holy, have the courage not to agree. Remember that even 50 rubles is a beggarly fee. If you take less, you will spoil my own trade as well: after all, I too am a contributor to "Rodnik"!
За сим, ради создателя, не пренебрегите следующим советом. Запросите с Сысоихи не менее 50 рублей за лист. Умоляю Вас! Хоть раз в жизни уважьте меня! Если она, психопатически ноя и виляя в письме турнюром, будет жаловаться на бедность и предлагать Вам 30–40 руб., то, ради всего святого, имейте мужество не согласиться. Помните, что и 50 руб.– нищенская плата. Если Вы возьмете дешево, то испортите и мне коммерцию: ведь я тоже сотрудник "Родника"!
Prepare your next story for March, not stinting on length, but as short as possible. Now your affair is in the bag, and as for "Rodnik" you may rest easy. Sysoeva will overwhelm you with letters, and you, in revenge, will overwhelm her with stories – and so on to the grave.
Следующий рассказ готовьте к марту, не стесняясь размером, но возможно короче. Теперь уж Ваше дело в шляпе и насчет "Родника" можете быть покойны. Сысоева одолеет Вас письмами, а Вы в отместку будете одолевать ее рассказами – и этак до гробовой доски.
Don’t forget: "Rodnik" does not escape the critics. It is a privileged journal, not on a level with "Detsky Otdykh."
Не забудьте: "Родник" не минуется критикою. Это привилегированный журнал, не чета "Детскому отдыху".
We arrived safely. To my great shame, I remembered at the station that I had given nothing to Nikifor... I sent him some small change by Gavrila, but I suspect that small change will get no further than the Kryukovo tavern.

The road back seemed short, for it was light and warm, but – alas! – arriving home, I sorely regretted that this road had been the way back: my study seemed repellent to me, and the dinner they served (they were not expecting us) was such that I recalled your artistic vareniki with longing.
