A member of the Kiselev circle at Babkino or Voskresensk to whom Chekhov sends his bows alongside Alexei Sergeyevich, Vasilisa, and Sergei; addressed teasingly as "Lilisha" in the 10 November 1887 letter to Kiselev. Identified in the standard PSS commentary index as Yefremova, E. A. ("Елизавета Александровна (Лилиша) -- см. Ефремова Е. А."); not otherwise documented in this corpus, and distinct from other Elizaveta figures such as Elizaveta Mikhailovna and Elizaveta Sakharova.

"Зарубить на носу" ("to notch on one's nose") is a common Russian idiom for committing something firmly to memory, here given a literal comic twist: Lilisha's actual nose is to bear the notch, then be brandished at Kiselev as a reminder. Lilisha is Elizaveta Alexandrovna, identified in the standard PSS commentary index as Yefremova, E. A.
