1 Written from Moscow on 25 March 1888 to Maria Vladimirovna Kiseleva, a family friend and writer who, with her husband Alexei Sergeyevich Kiselev, owned the Babkino estate where the Chekhovs summered. The occasion is Kiseleva’s approaching name-day, and the letter mixes warm congratulation with a light, teasing account of Chekhov’s recent trip to Petersburg.
2 Chekhov reports on the success of his story "The Steppe" and his stay with the publisher Alexei Suvorin, describes being feted in literary Petersburg society – including dinners with Anna Evreinova, the editor of "Severny Vestnik" – and mentions a visit from Alexander Almedingen, editor of the children’s journal "Rodnik" and nephew of Kiseleva’s own acquaintance nicknamed "Sysoikha" (distinct from Evreinova, whom Chekhov did visit). He closes with news of a second printing of "In the Twilight," an account of his earnings, joking greetings to the Kiselev household and its members, and a wish to spend the coming season at Babkino.

First of all, much-esteemed Maria Vladimirovna, let me congratulate you on your approaching name-day. May God keep you for many years! I wish you eighty-seven more years of life and eighty-seven more chances to watch the starlings and larks return, with which you are now so in love.

I have read your letter to Misha, and in answer to your wish to have an offprint of my "Steppe," I send you my promise to present you, in the not too distant future, with my new little book, in which this "Steppe" will be included.

I got back from Petersburg the other day. I bathed there in glory and sniffed incense. I stayed with Suvorin, grew used to his family, and in the spring I am going to join him in the Crimea. In the character of a great writer, I spent the whole time in Petersburg riding about in a landau and drinking champagne. On the whole I felt like a scoundrel.
I did not call on Sysoikha, but I did call – three times, in fact, and even dined – on the editress of "Severny Vestnik," Evreinova, a very sweet and clever old maid who holds the degree of "Doctor of Laws" and in profile resembles a roasted starling. In general there are so many clever ladies and maidens in Petersburg that I was quite glad your watchful eye was not there beside me. Today I was visited by the editor of "Rodnik," Almedingen, an officer of the General Staff and nephew of your honey-tongued Sysoikha. He will call on me again tomorrow. We talked about you. He praises you, and I say: "Hm..."
У Сысоихи я не был, но зато 3 раза был и даже обедал у редакторши "Северного вестника" Евреиновой, очень милой и умной старой девы, имеющей степень "доктора прав" и похожей в профиль на жареного скворца. Вообще в Питере столько умных дам и дев, что я был очень рад отсутствию возле меня Вашего наблюдающего ока. Сегодня у меня был редактор "Родника" Альмединген, офицер генерального штаба, племянник Вашей медоточивой Сысоихи. Будет он у меня и завтра. Говорили мы с ним о Вас. Он хвалит, а я говорю: "гм..."

In Petersburg they took to calling me Potemkin, though I have no Catherine of my own. Evidently they take me for a favorite among the muses.

Work is going badly. I feel like falling in love, or getting married, or flying off in a balloon.
