We are living in Tarusa district,
Kaluga province, in the village of Bogimovo, on the estate of a certain young squire who goes about in his shirt untucked and big boots, is very absent-minded, liberal, and keeps as housekeeper a red-haired, toothless young woman named
Amenaisa Erastovna. An enormous house, an excellent park, the inevitable views at the sight of which I am obliged for some reason to say "Ah!," a little river, a pond with hungry carp fond of getting themselves caught on a hook, a mass of patients, the smell of iodoform, and evening walks. I busy myself with my
Sakhalin, and in the intervals, so as not to starve my family to death, I caress the muse and write stories. Everything as before, nothing new. I get up every day at 5 in the morning and brew my own coffee with my own hands – a sign that I have already fallen into the rut of an old bachelor, à la
E. I. Tyshko, and have made my peace with it.
Masha paints in watercolors,
Misha wears his
cockade with honor,
Father discourses on bishops,
Mother bustles about,
Ivan fishes. On the same estate with us live
the zoologist Wagner with his family, and the Kiselevs – but not those Kiselevs, other ones, not the real ones. Wagner catches beetles and spiders, and
Kiselev the father paints studies, since he is an artist. We have theatricals, tableaux vivants, and picnics. It is all very funny and merry, but I need only catch a ruffe or find a mushroom, and my head droops, my thoughts carry me off into the past, and my brain and soul begin to sing a duet in sepulchral voices: "We have parted..." The overthrown idol and the abandoned temple rise up in my imagination, and I think reverently: "All the zoologists and great artists in the world I would trade for one little
Idiotik."
