A house-painting contractor of about fifty, gaunt and visibly ill for years yet astonishingly agile on rooftops and church domes; nicknamed "Radish" (Редька) in town, reportedly his actual surname. A devout, aphoristic craftsman ('the plant-louse eats the grass, rust eats the iron, and the lie eats the soul') who takes Misail on as a workman, shelters Kleopatra and Misail in his home, and becomes the moral center of the story's working-class world.

Редька ("Redka," Radish) is the house-painter Andrei Ivanov's town nickname; the source itself explains at this point that it was said to be his real surname, which is why the translation renders it in English ("Radish") rather than leaving it transliterated -- the joke only reads coherently in translation if the name is legible as a word.
