Tears Invisible to the World
Headnote
A comic dialogue story (1884) built around a household roused at midnight by a pair of drunken officers demanding supper, its title borrowed ironically from Gogol’s famous formula for laughter mixed with unseen tears. Chekhov’s version keeps to broad, fine-grained farce – the "tears" here are entirely absent, the joke residing in the mismatch between the grand literary tag and the story’s petty domestic comedy.

the deputy police chief Pruzhina-Pruzhinsky. – By the way... have you ever, gentlemen,

chewed unconsciously, and did not notice mud gathering in his galoshes.
– No, I can’t! – he said. – I can’t bear it any longer!
I’ll go home and satisfy myself. Here’s what, gentlemen, come along to my place too!
I swear to God! We’ll drink a glass each, have a bite of whatever God sends. A little cucumber, some sausage...
