A second decoration pun, echoing the story's title pun: Modest Alexeich jokes that after the Anna he need only await 'the appearance in the world of a little Vladimir' -- ostensibly a hoped-for son, but punning on the Order of St. Vladimir, fourth class (see Section 73), the next and more prestigious decoration above the Anna in the Russian honors system. His Excellency's failure to react confirms that the joke, unlike his own earlier one, falls flat.

The Order of St. Vladimir ranked above both the Stanislaus and the Anna in the hierarchy of imperial Russian orders; its fourth (lowest) class was nonetheless a step up from the Anna, second class Modest Alexeich has just received, making it the next object of his decoration-hunting ambition.
