2 – You see how it is, Grisha, – he said to
the lieutenant, after the usual New Year’s greetings. – I wouldn’t trouble you if it weren’t urgent. Do me a favor, my dear fellow, lend me your
Stanislaus for the day. You see, I’m dining today at
the merchant Spichkin’s. And you know that scoundrel Spichkin: he’s mad for decorations, and all but takes for a blackguard any man who hasn’t got something dangling from his neck or his buttonhole. And besides, he has two daughters...
Nastya, you know, and
Zina... I speak to you as a friend... You understand me, my dear man. Give it here, do me the kindness!
3 Pustyakov said all this stammering, blushing, and glancing timidly at the door. The lieutenant swore, but agreed.
4 At two o’clock in the afternoon Pustyakov was riding in a cab to the Spichkins’, and, throwing open his coat a little, kept glancing down at his chest. On his chest, gold and enamel, glittered someone else’s
Stanislaus.
5 "Somehow one feels more respect for oneself! – thought the teacher, clearing his throat with satisfaction. – A little thing, worth five roubles, no more, and what an effect it produces!"
6 Pulling up at Spichkin’s house, he threw open his coat and began slowly settling with the
cabman. The cabman, it seemed to him, caught sight of his shoulder-straps, his buttons, and his Stanislaus, and turned to stone. Pustyakov coughed with satisfaction and went into the house. Taking off his coat in the hall, he glanced into the drawing room. There, at the long dining table, some fifteen people were already seated at dinner. There was a hum of talk and the clink of dishes.
7 – Who’s that ringing? – came the host’s voice. – Ah, Lev Nikolaich! Do come in. A little late, but no matter... We’ve only just sat down.
8 Pustyakov thrust out his chest, lifted his head, and, rubbing his hands, walked into the room. But here he saw something dreadful. At the table, next to Zina, sat his colleague from the school,
the teacher of French, Tramblyan. To show the Frenchman the decoration would mean inviting a mass of the most unpleasant questions, would mean disgracing himself forever, ruining his name... Pustyakov’s first thought was to tear off the decoration or to flee; but it was sewn on firmly, and retreat was already impossible. Quickly covering the decoration with his right hand, he hunched his shoulders, bowed awkwardly to the company in general, and, offering his hand to no one, sank heavily onto the one free chair, directly opposite his French colleague.
9 "Been drinking, I daresay!" – thought Spichkin, glancing at his flustered face.
10 A plate of soup was set before Pustyakov. He took up the spoon in his left hand, but, recalling that in well-ordered society it is not proper to eat with the left hand, announced that he had already dined and did not care to eat.
11 – I’ve had my dinner already, sir... Merci, sir... – he muttered. – I was paying a call on
my uncle,
archpriest-eleyev/">the archpriest Eleyev, and he pressed me to... that is... to dine with him.
12 Pustyakov’s soul filled with a gnawing anguish and a raging vexation: the soup gave off a delicious smell, and from the steamed sturgeon rose an extraordinarily appetizing fragrance. The teacher tried to free his right hand and cover the decoration with his left, but this proved awkward.
13 "They’ll notice... And my arm stretched clear across my chest, as if I were about to sing. Lord, if only dinner would end sooner! I’ll dine at the tavern after!"
14 After the third course he glanced timidly, with one eye, at the Frenchman. Tramblyan, for some reason greatly abashed, was looking at him and likewise eating nothing. Having looked at one another, both grew still more abashed and dropped their eyes to their empty plates.
15 "He noticed, the scoundrel! – thought Pustyakov. – I can see by his mug that he noticed! And he’s a blackguard, a tattletale. He’ll report it to the
director tomorrow!"
16 The hosts and guests ate through the fourth course, and, by fate’s decree, the fifth as well...
17 A tall gentleman rose, with broad, hairy nostrils, a hooked nose, and eyes narrowed by nature. He stroked his own head and proclaimed:
18 – Er-r-r... I pro... I pro-pose we drink to the flourishing of the ladies present!
19 The diners rose noisily and took up their glasses. A loud "hurrah" swept through every room. The ladies smiled and reached out to clink glasses. Pustyakov rose and took his glass in his left hand.
20 – Lev Nikolaich, be so good as to pass this glass to
Nastasya Timofeyevna! – some man addressed him, holding out a glass. – Make her drink it!
21 This time Pustyakov, to his very great horror, was forced to put his right hand to use as well. The Stanislaus, with its crumpled red ribbon, at last saw the light and shone forth. The teacher went pale, lowered his head, and glanced timidly toward the Frenchman. The Frenchman was looking at him with astonished, questioning eyes. His lips smiled slyly, and the confusion slowly melted from his face...
22 – Yuly Avgustovich! – the host addressed the Frenchman. – Pass the bottle along, if you please!
23 Tramblyan reached his right hand toward the bottle, hesitating, and – oh, joy! Pustyakov caught sight of a decoration on his chest. And it was no Stanislaus, but
an Anna entire! So the Frenchman had cheated too! Pustyakov laughed with pleasure, sat back in his chair and sprawled... Now there was no more need to hide his Stanislaus! Both were guilty of the same sin, and so there was no one left to inform on him and disgrace him...
24 – A-a-ah... hm!.. – Spichkin mumbled, catching sight of the decoration on the teacher’s chest.
25 – Indeed, sir! – said Pustyakov. – An astonishing thing, Yuly Avgustovich! How few of us were put forward before the holidays! So many of us, and only you and I received one! An a-sto-nish-ing thing!
26 Tramblyan nodded his head merrily and thrust forward his left lapel, on which an Anna of the third degree made a fine show.
27 After dinner Pustyakov walked through every room showing the young ladies his decoration. His heart was light, at ease, though hunger still pinched him under the spoon.
28 "If only I’d known such a trick, – he thought, casting an envious glance at Tramblyan, who was chatting with Spichkin about decorations, – I’d have pinned on
a Vladimir. Ah, I never thought of it!"
29 That single thought alone tormented him. In all else he was perfectly happy.
