Irina

also: Ирина Сергеевна Прозорова, Ирина, Ирочка, Irina Sergeyevna

The youngest Prozorov sister, twenty at the play's opening on her name day, initially rapturous about the meaning of work; a succession of disillusioning jobs (the telegraph office, then the town council) exhausts that ideal, and in Act Four, having given up hope of Moscow, she agrees to marry Baron Tuzenbach without loving him, only for him to be killed in a duel with Solyony on the eve of their wedding, leaving her to face a solitary future of work alone.
