The Night Before the Trial

Ночь перед судом (рассказ подсудимого)

Headnote

"The Night Before the Trial" (1884) is a longer comic story following a man anxious on the eve of a court appearance, his nerves and self-justifications spinning out across a sleepless night. It shows Chekhov working at greater length than most of his 1884 sketches, building a sustained comic interior monologue rather than a brief anecdote.
