The Siren

Headnote

1 "The Siren" ("Сирена") was first published in the newspaper Novoye Vremya in 1887, in Chekhov’s mature magazine period, after judges’ chambers and provincial courtrooms had become one of his favorite comic settings (see also "A Malefactor" and the many justice-of-the-peace sketches of these years). The frame is a district congress of justices of the peace, pausing between sittings before going home to dinner – a slim pretext for the story’s real subject, which is a single uninterrupted set piece of talk.

2 The secretary of the congress, Zhilin, launches into an unstoppable, increasingly rapturous monologue on the proper way to eat a Russian dinner from aperitif to nightcap – vodka poured just so, herring and caviar and salted mushrooms, kulebyaka pastry, borshch, fried fish, roast fowl, ratafia, a cigar, and bed with a newspaper – while the chairman, trying to finish a dissenting opinion, is repeatedly derailed into spoiling fresh sheets of paper by the sound of Zhilin’s voice. The comedy is escalatory and almost musical: each of Zhilin’s listeners is undone in turn by pure sensory suggestion, the philosopher Milkin and then the fat honorary justice bolting from the room mid-sentence, until the chairman himself abandons his unfinished opinion and flees. The title’s irony is the point: this "siren" lures men not with song but with food, and no one on stage, however irritated, proves immune.

After one of the sittings of the N— district congress of justices, the judges gathered in the deliberation room to take off their uniforms, rest for a minute, and set off home for dinner. The chairman of the congress, a very distinguished-looking man with fluffy side-whiskers, who had been left with a "dissenting opinion" on one of the cases just decided, sat at the table hurrying to write it out. The district justice of the peace Milkin, a young man with a languid, melancholy face who passed for a philosopher dissatisfied with his surroundings and in search of life’s purpose, stood at the window gazing sadly out into the yard. The other district justice and one of the honorary justices had already left. The honorary justice who remained, a flabby, heavily breathing fat man, and the deputy prosecutor, a young German with a catarrhal complexion, sat on the little sofa waiting for the chairman to finish writing so they could go to dinner together. Before them stood the secretary of the congress, Zhilin, a little man with side-whiskers by his ears and an expression of sweetness on his face. Smiling honeyedly and looking at the fat man, he was saying in a low voice:
"All of us want to eat just now, because we’re tired and it’s already past three, but that, my dear soul Grigory Savvich, isn’t a real appetite. A real, wolfish appetite, the kind where it seems you could eat your own father, only comes after physical exertion – after hunting with the hounds, say, or when you’ve driven a hundred versts on post-horses without a rest. The imagination counts for a great deal too. Suppose you’re driving home from the hunt and you want to have a hearty dinner – you must never think about anything clever; anything clever or learned always kills the appetite. As you well know, philosophers and scholars are the very last people when it comes to eating, and pigs, if you’ll excuse me, eat better than they do. Driving home, you must take care that your head thinks of nothing but the little decanter and the hors d’oeuvres. Once, on the road, I shut my eyes and pictured to myself a little suckling pig with horseradish, and it gave me such a fit of appetite it was almost hysterics. Well, sir, and when you drive into your own yard, you need something to be smelling from the kitchen just then, you know, something of that sort..."
"Roast goose knows how to smell," said the honorary justice, breathing heavily.
"Don’t say it, my dear soul Grigory Savvich, a duck or a snipe can give a goose ten points ahead. There’s no tenderness, no delicacy in the goose’s bouquet. Nothing smells more enticing than young onion when it’s just starting to fry, you know, and hissing, the rascal, through the whole house. Well, sir, when you come into the house the table ought already to be laid, and when you sit down, you tuck your napkin into your collar straight off and, unhurried, reach for the little decanter of vodka. And you don’t pour it, my dear, into a wine-glass, but into some antediluvian grandfatherly little tumbler of silver, or one of those pot-bellied ones with the inscription ’Even monks partake of this,’ and you don’t drink it down at once, but first you sigh, rub your hands, look indifferently up at the ceiling, and then, unhurried like that, you bring it, the little vodka, up to your lips, and – at once sparks go from your stomach through your whole body..."
The secretary’s sweet face took on an expression of bliss.
"Sparks..." he repeated, screwing up his eyes. "The moment you’ve drunk, you must have a bite at once."
"Listen," said the chairman, raising his eyes to the secretary, "speak more quietly! You’ve made me spoil a second sheet already, on your account."
"Ah, I beg your pardon, Pyotr Nikolaich! I’ll be quiet," said the secretary, and went on in a half-whisper: "Well, sir, and the bite, my dear soul Grigory Savvich, that too must be done with skill. You must know what to eat with your drink. The very best appetizer, if you want to know, is herring. You’ve eaten a bit of it with onion and mustard sauce, and then at once, my benefactor, while you still feel the sparks in your stomach, you have some caviar by itself, or, if you like, with a bit of lemon, then plain radish with salt, then herring again, but best of all, my benefactor, are salted saffron milk-caps, if you chop them fine, like caviar, and, you know, with onion, with Provençal oil... a delight! But burbot liver – now that’s a tragedy!"
"M-yes..." agreed the honorary justice, screwing up his eyes. "Also good for the bite are, that... stewed white mushrooms..."
"Yes, yes, yes... with onion, you know, with bay leaf and all sorts of spices. You open the pot, and out of it steam, the smell of mushrooms... it can even bring a tear sometimes! Well, sir, the moment they’ve dragged the kulebyaka in from the kitchen, you must at once, without delay, have a second drink."
"Ivan Guryich!" said the chairman in a tearful voice. "You’ve made me spoil a third sheet, on your account!"
"The devil only knows, all he thinks about is food!" muttered the philosopher Milkin, making a face of contempt. "Are there really no other interests in life besides mushrooms and kulebyaka?"
"Well, sir, before the kulebyaka, a drink," the secretary went on in a low voice; he had grown so carried away by now that, like a singing nightingale, he heard nothing but his own voice. "The kulebyaka must be appetizing, shameless, in all its nakedness, so that it’s a temptation. You wink an eye at it, cut off a great chunk like this, and wiggle your fingers over it just so, from an excess of feeling. You start eating it, and the butter runs from it like tears, the filling rich, juicy, with eggs, with giblets, with onion..."
The secretary rolled his eyes up and twisted his mouth clear to one ear. The honorary justice grunted and, probably picturing the kulebyaka to himself, wiggled his fingers.
"The devil only knows what this is..." muttered the district justice, moving off to another window.
"Ate two pieces, and saved the third for the shchi," the secretary continued, inspired. "The moment you’ve finished with the kulebyaka, so as not to spoil the appetite, you must at once order the shchi brought in... The shchi must be hot, fiery. But best of all, my benefactor, is beetroot borshch in the Ukrainian style, with a bit of ham and with sausages. With it you’re served sour cream and fresh parsley with dill. Splendid too is rassolnik made of giblets and young kidneys, and if you love soup, then of all soups the best is the one filled out with roots and greens: carrots, asparagus, cauliflower, and all that sort of jurisprudence."
"Yes, a splendid thing..." sighed the chairman, tearing his eyes from the paper, but at once he caught himself and groaned: "Have some fear of God! At this rate I won’t finish my dissenting opinion till evening! I’m spoiling a fourth sheet!"
"I won’t, I won’t! I beg your pardon!" the secretary apologized, and went on in a whisper: "Well, sir, the moment you’ve finished the borshch or the soup, you must at once order the fish course brought in, my benefactor. Of the voiceless fish the very best is fried crucian carp in sour cream; only, so that it doesn’t smell of mud and has delicacy, you must keep it alive in milk for a whole day and night."
"Sterlet in rings is good too," said the honorary justice, closing his eyes, but at once, unexpectedly for everyone, he jerked himself up from his seat, made a savage face, and roared toward the chairman: "Pyotr Nikolaich, will it be soon? I can’t wait any longer! I can’t!"
"Let me finish!"
"Well, then I’ll go by myself! The devil take you all!"
The fat man waved his hand, snatched up his hat, and without saying goodbye ran out of the room. The secretary sighed and, bending toward the deputy prosecutor’s ear, went on in a low voice:
"Pike-perch or carp with a tomato-and-mushroom gravy is good too. But you won’t fill up on fish, Stepan Frantsych; fish is not the substantial part of a dinner, the main thing in a dinner isn’t the fish, isn’t the sauces, but the roast. What bird do you love best?"
The deputy prosecutor made a sour face and said with a sigh:
"Unfortunately, I can’t share your enthusiasm: I have catarrh of the stomach."
"Come now, sir! Catarrh of the stomach was invented by doctors! That illness comes more from freethinking and from pride. Pay it no mind. Suppose you don’t feel like eating, or feel sick – pay it no mind and eat anyway. Suppose, say, they bring a pair of woodcock to go with the roast, and if you add to that a young grouse or a pair of plump little quails, then you’ll forget all about any catarrh, upon my word of honor. And roast turkey? White, fat, juicy, you know, rather like a nymph..."
"Yes, that’s probably tasty," said the prosecutor, smiling sadly. "Turkey I might eat."
"Lord, and duck? If you take a young duck, one that’s just caught the ice of the first frosts, and roast it on a pan together with potatoes, and the potatoes finely cut, and browned, and soaked through with the duck’s fat, and..."
The philosopher Milkin made a savage face and appeared to want to say something, but suddenly smacked his lips, evidently picturing roast duck to himself, and, without a word, drawn on by some unknown force, snatched up his hat and ran out.
"Yes, I suppose I could eat some duck too..." sighed the deputy prosecutor.
The chairman stood up, walked about, and sat down again.
"After the roast a man grows full and falls into a sweet stupor," the secretary continued. "At such a time the body feels good and the soul is touched. To sweeten it you might drink three little glasses of ratafia."
The chairman grunted and crossed out the sheet.
"I’m spoiling a sixth sheet," he said angrily. "This is shameless!"
"Write, write, my benefactor!" the secretary whispered. "I won’t say another word! I’ll be quiet as anything. I tell you honestly, Stepan Frantsych," he went on in a barely audible whisper, "home-made ratafia is better than any champagne. After the very first glass your whole soul is seized by a kind of fragrance, a sort of mirage, and it seems to you you’re not sitting in an armchair at home, but somewhere in Australia, on the softest sort of ostrich..."
"Ah, let’s go, Pyotr Nikolaich!" said the prosecutor, jerking his foot impatiently.
"Yes, sir," the secretary went on. "While drinking the ratafia it’s good to smoke a little cigar and blow rings, and at such a time such dreamy thoughts come into your head – that you’re a generalissimo, say, or married to the foremost beauty in the world, and that this beauty swims all day long before your very windows in a sort of pool with goldfish. She swims, and you call to her: ’My darling, come and kiss me!’"
"Pyotr Nikolaich!" groaned the deputy prosecutor.
"Yes, sir," the secretary went on. "Once you’ve had your smoke, gather up the skirts of your dressing-gown and off to bed! Lie down on your back like this, belly up, and take the newspaper in your hands. When your eyes are sticking together and drowsiness stands in your whole body, it’s pleasant to read about politics: there, you see, Austria’s blundered, there France hasn’t managed to please someone, there the Pope’s gone against the grain – you read it, and it’s pleasant."
The chairman leapt up, flung his pen aside, and seized his hat with both hands. The deputy prosecutor, who had forgotten his catarrh and was languishing with impatience, leapt up too.
"Let’s go!" he cried.
"Pyotr Nikolaich, but what about the dissenting opinion," said the secretary, frightened. "When will you write it, my benefactor? You have to be in town at six o’clock!"
The chairman waved his hand and rushed to the door. The deputy prosecutor too waved his hand and, snatching up his briefcase, vanished together with the chairman. The secretary sighed, looked after them reproachfully, and began gathering up the papers.
