Headnote

1 Written on April 4, 1886, in Moscow to Viktor Viktorovich Bilibin, a fellow humor writer and the secretary of the "Fragments" (Oskolki) circle around Nikolai Leikin. Chekhov races through a dense volley of small news and banter: Leikin’s mysterious silence, a bout of coughing blood, plans for a friend’s wedding at which he will stand as best man, a raise he intends to ask for, and — most notably — the arrival of an unsolicited, effusive letter of praise from the elder novelist Dmitry Grigorovich, urging him to abandon hack journalism for serious literary work.

2 The letter is a vivid specimen of Chekhov’s early comic-journalist voice: rapid-fire, self-deprecating, packed with in-jokes and throwaway lines ("write myself dry, couldn’t someone give me a flogging?"). It is also historically significant as one of Chekhov’s first reactions to the Grigorovich letter of March 1886, an encounter usually cited as a turning point that pushed him toward more serious fiction. The closing exchanges about handwriting and office work are genuine informal banter between friends, not editorial apparatus.

Dear
I am answering your letter at once, on condition that you hurry to answer the questions you will glean from all that follows.
For nearly two months now I have had no letters from Leikin. He is probably angry over "The Cricket," or something of the sort. From his wrath I suffer doubly: a) I get no letters, and so my archive is deprived of an extra two or three precious tomes, and b) I know nothing about my little book. Where is it, what’s happening with it, how, why? Has the vignette been received, and so on?
Why haven’t you bought the arsenic? Any pharmacy will give it to you. If there’s any doubt, make the pharmacist dig through the list of physicians and find my name there...
Why aren’t you working for "New Times"?
You write that my last two stories in the "Petersburg Gazette" are weak... I forgive you this liberalism on condition that you forgive me the stories to come, which will be weaker still... I’ve worn myself out and written myself dry... Listen, couldn’t someone give me a flogging?
As for the pretty women you ask about, I hasten to "constatate" that there are many of them in Moscow. Just now my sister had a whole flower-bed of them, and I melted like a Jew before a gold piece... By the way: in the latest "Wasps of Petersburg Life" you struck at the Jew three times. Now why?
I write this while dining... Barley soup, little pies, fried kasha, and cutlets, which I wish for you too.
Quite unexpectedly, suddenly, like a deus ex machina a god from the machine (Latin). Here in the sense of: a miracle., a letter came to me from Grigorovich. I answered and soon received another letter, with a photograph. The letters run a page and a half each; the hand is illegible, an old man’s hand; the old fellow demands that I write something substantial and abandon the hack work. He argues that I have real talent (underlined by him), and in proof of my artistry he makes excerpts from my stories. He writes warmly and sincerely. I am glad, of course, though I do feel that G. has overstepped the mark a bit.
You ask that, once I become famous, I bow to you on the street. Very well. I’ll even send you my facsimile...
When is your wedding? On Bright Week I am best man to two people: a doctor and an artist. The first is taking a merchant’s daughter with a dowry of 15,000. There will be music at the wedding. In my drawing room, at this very moment, some lawyer is singing: "I loved you once... love, perhaps, has not quite died within me." Singing tenor. Lawyers are mostly tenors...
Mr. Secretary, hurry and send the honorarium! I have only 4 rubles in my pocket.
On April 30 I go to the dacha. In summer I shall probably be in the south. I’ve had another spell of coughing blood.
My dear fellow, can it really be that we’ll soon be thirty? What a disgrace! After thirty comes old age...
I didn’t expect success from "The Nightmare." It’s hard to hit the right vein!
"Grisha" is your theme. Remember? Merci.
Merci.
"The Nightmare" brought me 87 rubles.
Why don’t you put together something big and fiery this summer?
The weather is splendid. Have you heard anything about Khudekov? Where is he? I want to ask for a raise.
Do you go to the bathhouse often?
Palmin and the Tsar Bell are alive and well.
My regards to your bride. And with that, be well and farewell.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
Ever since I became a celebrity, my handwriting has noticeably changed for the worse.
You write terribly! One could die from your handwriting.
What is it you do at the department?
