Reading notes

• To Al. P. Chekhov, 25 January 1883. Moscow. §7 the Nemirovich-Danchenkos

  The Nemirovich-Danchenko family (the surname later made famous by the theater director and playwright Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko), part of the same circle of Moscow literary acquaintances.

• To A. S. Kiselev, 8 December 1891. Moscow. §5 Nemirovich-Danchenko, a friend of mine who sits on the Theatrical-Literary Committee

  Vladimir Ivanovich Nemirovich-Danchenko (1858-1943), dramatist and critic, later co-founder of the Moscow Art Theatre with Stanislavsky; in 1891 he served on the state Theatrical-Literary Committee (\foreignlanguage{russian}{"Театрально-литературный комитет"}), the body that vetted plays for admission to the imperial (\foreignlanguage{russian}{"казенная"}) stage. Chekhov names him as his second, and evidently more consequential, contact -- someone on whom "depends the fate" of any play hoping to be produced at a state theater.

• To A. I. Sumbatov, 27 February 1891. Moscow. §4 My regards to Vl. Iv.

  "Vl Iv" almost certainly abbreviates Vladimir Ivanovich Nemirovich-Danchenko, writer and future Moscow Art Theatre co-founder, already identified by this same initialism elsewhere in the corpus and a close mutual friend of both Chekhov and Sumbatov in this period. The letter itself gives only the initials, so this identification is offered as probable rather than certain.

• The Mysteries of One Hundred and Forty-Four Catastrophes §33 Nemirovich-Danchenko

  The surname of a real, prominent Russian literary family of the era (the elder brother Vasily was a well-known journalist and novelist; the younger, Vladimir, later co-founded the Moscow Art Theatre with Stanislavsky) -- borrowed here as the narrator's loyal friend.
