Headnote

Written on 27 December 1889 in Moscow to Aleksei Sergeyevich Suvorin, the wealthy newspaper publisher (Novoye Vremya) who was Chekhov’s closest correspondent and unofficial patron through the late 1880s and 1890s. This is one of Chekhov’s most-quoted "literary manifesto" letters, written in the aftermath of the death of his brother Nikolai in June 1889 and amid his own increasingly dark assessment of contemporary letters.

Contents: Chekhov opens with a small practical matter – forwarding a young writer’s story, "The Morning of Notary Gorshkov," for possible use in a Saturday supplement of Suvorin’s paper. He then pivots into an extended, agitated meditation on Paul Bourget’s novel Le Disciple (1889) and on Tolstoy, whom Chekhov accuses (via paraphrase, not quotation of any specific Tolstoy text) of a nihilistic, life-denying misogyny dressed as moral seriousness. He contrasts this with what he sees as Bourget’s more subtly corrosive move: inventing a seductive pseudo-scientific "psychological experiment" plot (the character Sixte) that discredits science and morality alike in the public mind. From there Chekhov generalizes into a bitter denunciation of the Russian "intelligentsia" as degenerate, apathetic, sexually corrupt, and unpatriotic – concluding that Germany’s freedom from this kind of writer is a source of national strength. The letter then breaks off (he was interrupted) and shifts abruptly to theater business: a performance that day of his own play The Wood Demon (Леший), whose newly rewritten Act IV he credits to Suvorin and to Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko. He closes with holiday greetings.

Young maidens and unblemished lambs bring me their compositions; out of a heap of rubbish I have picked out one little story, blotted it up a bit, and am sending it to you. Read it. It is small and without pretensions. It will probably do for a Saturday number. It is called "The Morning of Notary Gorshkov."
In the tone of Jean Shcheglov begging you to talk with him about the theater, I ask you: "Allow me to talk with you about literature!" When in one of my last letters I wrote to you about Bourget and Tolstoy, I was thinking least of all about lovely odalisques, or about the idea that a writer ought to depict only the quiet joys. I meant only to say that the best contemporary writers, the ones I love, serve evil, because they destroy. Some of them, like Tolstoy, say: "do not make use of women, because they have the whites; a wife is repellent, because her mouth smells; life is one long hypocrisy and deception, since a man gives himself an enema in the morning and, before death, can hardly sit on the close-stool, seeing his own wasted thighs." Others, not yet impotent, not yet sated in the body, but already sated in the spirit, sharpen their fancy to little green devils and invent a nonexistent demigod Sixtus and "psychological" experiments. True, Bourget tacked on a happy ending, but that banal ending is soon forgotten, and what remains in the memory is only Sixtus and the "experiments," which kill a hundred hares at once: they compromise science in the eyes of the crowd – science, which, like Caesar’s wife, must not be suspected – and from the height of a writer’s grandeur they hold in contempt conscience, freedom, love, honor, morality, instilling in the crowd the certainty that all of this, which restrains the beast in it and distinguishes it from the dog, and which has been won by centuries of struggle with nature, may easily be discredited by "experiments," if not now then in the future. Do such authors really "make one seek what is better, make one think and acknowledge that the vile is truly vile"? Do they really make one "renew" oneself? No, they make France degenerate, and in Russia they help the devil multiply the slugs and woodlice we call the intelligentsia. A limp, apathetic, lazily philosophizing, cold intelligentsia, which cannot for the life of it think up a decent design for its own paper money, which is unpatriotic, dreary, colorless, which gets drunk on a single glass and visits the fifty-kopeck brothel, which grumbles and readily denies everything, since for a lazy brain it is easier to deny than to affirm; which does not marry and refuses to raise children, and so on. A limp soul, limp muscles, an absence of movement, an unsteadiness of thought – and all this because life has no meaning, because women have the whites, and because money is evil.
Where there is degeneration and apathy, there is sexual perversion, cold depravity, miscarriages, premature old age, a grumbling youth, there is the decline of the arts, indifference to science, there is injustice in its every form. A society which does not believe in God but fears omens and the devil, which denies all physicians and at the same time hypocritically mourns Botkin and worships Zakharyin, dare not so much as stammer of being acquainted with justice.
Germany does not know authors like Bourget and Tolstoy, and in this lies her good fortune. In her there is science, and patriotism, and good diplomats, and everything you like. She will defeat France, and her allies will be the French authors themselves.
I was interrupted in my writing, or else I would have dashed off five sheets to you today. Some other time.
Today The Wood Demon is playing. Act IV is entirely new. It owes its existence to you and to Vlad. Nemirovich-Danchenko, who, having read the play, gave me a few remarks, quite practical ones. The men do not know their roles and act tolerably; the ladies know their roles and act badly. How my play comes off will be reported to you by the tiresome Filippov, who asked me the other day for a subject for a letter to you. Dull people.
I congratulate you on the holiday.
My heartfelt greetings to all of yours.
