Misail's schoolmate, expelled from the gymnasium's second form; a fussy, weak-willed young man who works first at the Dubechnya telegraph office and then as a railway conductor. His family's estate (Dubechnya) is sold to Dolzhikov; he drifts into drunkenness and, by the story's end, is reported to have urged the workmen to help him kill Moisei and rob his own mother.
