Letter · 1888

To I. L. Leontyev, 14 August 1888. Sumy.

Headnote

1 Written from Sumy on 14 August 1888 to the writer Ivan Leontyevich Leontyev, who published under the pen name Shcheglov and whom Chekhov addresses here, as often, by the nicknames "Jean" and "captain." The letter follows on his summer travels through the Crimea and the Caucasus, much of it as a guest of the publisher Aleksey Suvorin.

2 Chekhov recounts his travels and his stay with Suvorin, then a frightening episode in Baku, where Suvorin’s son received a telegram warning of diphtheria in the family and the elder Suvorin passed anxious days awaiting further word. He gives his travel plans, chides Shcheglov for sending a registered letter, asks him to forward a copy of his play "The Theatrical Sparrow," complains of a reluctance to return to Moscow, offers a brief rural vignette of carts and a colt outside his window, and closes with a half-joking invitation and farewell.

Your letter, dear Jean, I received only at home, on returning to my household gods. It seems to me I have traveled the whole world. I was in the Crimea, in Batum, in Sukhum, in New Athos, in Tiflis, in Baku...
Suvorin, the whole time I was his guest, was cheerful, brisk, talkative; he sang, he fished, he settled the world’s great questions with me... In Baku, Suvorin’s son, with whom I was traveling, received an ominous telegram about diphtheria. All the telegrams that followed were full of despair and dread... As far as one could judge from them, the elder Suvorin was living through such days and nights as God grant no one else.
I leave for Moscow on the 2nd of September. So I shall still have time to receive a letter from you. You write that a great deal of news has piled up... If it isn’t too much trouble, pass along at least one item of it.
What notion possessed you to send your letter registered?
Be so good as to send "The Theatrical Sparrow" to this address: "Moscow, Kudrinskaya Sadovaya, own house, to Dr. Ya. A. Korneyev, for Chekhov."
Ah, dear captain, if you only knew what laziness has come over me, how little I want to write, to go to Moscow! When I read the Moscow chronicle in the newspaper, the theater announcements, the notices and so on, it all strikes me as something like a catarrh I have already been through... Why is it that you and I don’t live in Kiev, in Odessa, in the country, but insist on the capital? It would be one thing if we made use of the capital’s charms, but instead we sit at home, cooped up within four walls! We are wasting our lives...
The peasants are carting grain to the threshing floor... Past my door, creaking, cart after cart crawls by... Beside the last cart there is a colt – it has decidedly nothing to do: it just walks along after the carts and nothing more... The dogs too, for want of anything better to do, go chasing after the colt...
Next year I shall without fail drag you here to me on a lasso. I am setting up a climatic station for the literary brotherhood. Suvorin has borrowed this idea of mine and wants to set up the very same thing at his place in Feodosia.
Well, be happy.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
