  Chekhov reports having found a dacha on an estate near Sumy for the coming summer and invites Barantsevich to visit -- an early mention of what would become the Chekhov family's extended stay at the Lintvaryovs' estate near Sumy.

The translator has preserved the discrepancy as-is rather than silently correcting it; see the note at section 2.

  Source's internal date inconsistency: the header (section 1) dates the letter "4 июля 1888 г." (4 July 1888), but this second line reads simply "4 июнь" (4 June), with no year and a different month, in the standard published Russian edition. The translator preserves this discrepancy as-is per the source, rather than emending it to match the header date.
