1 Written from Moscow on 15 April 1888 to Ivan Leontyevich Leontyev, who wrote under the pen name "Shcheglov" – hence Chekhov’s affectionate "Captain" (Shcheglov had served as an army officer before turning to literature).
2 A bantering, cajoling letter urging Shcheglov to join Chekhov that summer at the Lintvaryov estate near Sumy, in the Kharkov province of Ukraine, where Chekhov was about to install himself for the season. Chekhov good-humoredly notes a slip in the address of his previous letter, reports on travel and living costs, and needles Shcheglov – still in Petersburg, cast here as staying behind "in the tundra" – with promises of cheap living, fishing on the river Psyol, and a trip to the Poltava fair. The "Baroness" of section 9 is an in-joke between the two correspondents whose referent is not established from this letter alone.

Did you get my letter? Through carelessness I wrote "Shcheglov" instead of "Leontyev" on the address... Having noticed the mistake, I was too lazy to change the envelope and simply confined myself to putting "Leontyev" in front of "Shcheglov"...
Получили ли мое письмо? Я по рассеянности в адресе написал вместо "Леонтьеву" – "Щеглову"... Увидевши ошибку, я поленился переменять конверт и ограничился только тем, что впереди Щеглова поставил Леонтьева...
Has your new book come out? Yes? Send me a copy... After the first of May my address will be as follows: "The town of Sumy, Kharkov Province, the estate of A. V. Lintvaryova, for Dr. Chekhov." In general, whenever you address anything to me in the provinces, don’t forget to style me on the envelope as "doctor"... The post office never forgets a doctor’s address.

So then, I am off to Ukraine, while you, you crocodile, are staying behind in the tundra... Why are you staying? What for? Don’t tell me you have no money for the journey... Being short of cash cannot be an obstacle. One need only make up one’s mind... If you have 100 roubles, go. You’ll earn enough for food and pocket money on the spot. And food in Ukraine is cheaper than the prose of "The Son of the Fatherland." You could live the whole summer splendidly on 300 roubles, even lavishly... You yourself would come back the better for it, and your wife would thank you into the bargain. For the winter you can give up your flat and stack the furniture in some kindly soul’s shed... If you like, I’ll rent you a little flat in Sumy. The journey there, third class (from Petersburg), costs 19 roubles. Lodgings run no more than 10-15 roubles a month. Meat is 6-7 kopecks the pound. A single "Saturday spree" a month would be quite enough to live on in comfort. Ah, what pies I would treat you to! What a river! What fishing! Do you know what? Wave your hand at everything, send the whole business to the devil’s own mother, and make up your mind. If you haven’t the hundred roubles for the journey (that is, 40 or 50 roubles for the journey for the two of you, and 30 roubles in advance for lodgings), then take an advance from "New Times." They’ll give it to you, especially if you tell Suvorin that you’re coming with me to the river Psyol.

На зиму Вы можете Вашу квартиру бросить, а мебель сложить в сарае какого-нибудь благоприяте-ля... Если хотите, я найму Вам квартирку в Сумах. Проезд туда в III классе стоит (из Питера) 19 руб. Квартира не дороже 10–15 р. в месяц. Мясо 6–7 коп. фунт. Довольно одного "субботника" в месяц, чтобы прожить безбедно. Ах, какими бы я пирогами угощал Вас! Какая река! Какая рыбная ловля! Знаете что? Махните на всё рукой, пошлите всё к чертовой матери и решайтесь. Если у Вас нет на дорогу ста рублей (т. е. на дорогу за двоих 40 руб. или 50 и за квартиру вперед 30 р.), то возьмите в "Нов вр" авансом. Вам дадут, особливо если Вы скажете Суворину, что едете со мной на реку Псёл.
I promise you: a) a wondrous river; b) woods and orchards; c) an absurd public; d) pies; e) a boredom which you will remember with pleasure come winter; and f) an excursion to Poltava for the fair.

In Moscow they are selling splendid folding camp beds with mattresses, at 5 roubles apiece. I bought one and sent it off to Sumy by goods train. If you decide to come, I’ll buy a pair for you too. But now, farewell.
В Москве продаются прекрасные походные кровати с матрасами, складные, по 5 р. за штуку. Купил и отправил в Сумы товарным поездом. Если решитесь, то я и Вам куплю парочку. Однако прощайте.
