Letter · 1888

To V. A. Tikhonov, 4 May 1888. Moscow.

В. А. ТИХОНОВУ, 4 мая 1888 г. Москва.

Headnote

1 Written from Moscow on 4 May 1888 to the writer and playwright Vladimir Alekseevich Tikhonov, just as Chekhov was setting off for the summer.

2 A brief, hurried business note, dashed off on a letterhead while packing. Chekhov apologizes for the haste, explains that he is writing to Tikhonov’s old Petersburg address on Povarskoy Lane for lack of a summer one, welcomes Tikhonov’s wish to correspond, and gives his own summer address at the Lintvaryov estate near Sumy, asking Tikhonov to send his in return. The reverse of the note carries Tikhonov’s Petersburg mailing address.

Dear
Уважаемый
I am packing for the road, and so, forgive me, I am in a hurry and am writing on a letterhead. Not having received your summer address, I am taking the risk of writing to you at Povarskoy Lane, where you, perhaps, have long since ceased to be...
Укладываюсь в путь, а потому, простите, тороплюсь и пишу на бланке. Не дождавшись Вашего дачного адреса, рискую писать в Поварской пер, где Вас, быть может, уже нет давно...
Your wish to write to me pleases me. Here is my summer address: "the town of Sumy, Kharkov Province, the estate of A. V. Lintvaryova."
Ваше желание – писать мне – меня радует. Вот Вам мой летний адрес: "г. Сумы Харъков губ., усадьба А. В. Линтваревой".
Write, and be so good as to send me your summer address.
Пишите и благоволите прислать свой дачный адрес.
With regards, A. Chekhov.
Уважающий А. Чехов.
