Addressee: Maria Pavlovna Chekhova (Chekhov’s sister), at the Lintvarev family estate in Sumy, where she was spending the summer. The telegram is Chekhov’s reply to one she had sent him, presumably anxious for word after his arrival.

Content: written six days after Chekhov reached Sakhalin Island (11 July 1890, per the standard chronology), this is his first reassurance home. He confirms receipt of the family’s telegram, reports himself in good health, satisfied with his lodgings and the people around him, and the conditions generally favorable for the work ahead. He commits to returning in the autumn and promises to bring back "much of interest" – an early, characteristically understated nod to the scale of the Sakhalin project. He sends regards to a named group at Sumy, says he misses them, and closes with a one-word weather note ("Hot") – the same withheld, concrete-carries-the-feeling economy that governs his prose, compressed here to the telegraph wire’s own economy.
