Headnote

1 Written from the Lintvaryovs’ Luka estate near Sumy, 5 or 6 July 1888, to the poet and editor Aleksey Pleshcheyev, during Chekhov’s summer stay there.

2 Chekhov opens with a comic scene of the household in an uproar over a birth on the estate, gives his forwarding address for an upcoming trip to Feodosia (care of the publisher Suvorin), and shares a mixed assessment of the writer Vladimir Gilyarovsky – talented but literarily timid, unable to risk plain sincerity. He notes the confiscation of Gilyarovsky’s book, teases Pleshcheyev about a forgotten shirt, reports on a poem circulating locally, and describes a local acquaintance, Vorontsov (nicknamed "Veve"), who has been socializing more than usual. He closes with household news, greetings, and a reminder to Nikolai Alekseyevich about a promised visit.

I write you this, dear Aleksey Nikolayevich, at a moment when the whole of Luka has reared up on its hind legs, is kicking up dust to the heavens, is noisy, thunderous, and groaning: Antonida Fyodorovna, Pavel Mikhailovich’s wife, is giving birth. Every few minutes I have to run over to the little wing U18-a-u15, where the freshly-minted parents live. The labor is not hard, but it is long...
I am leaving for Feodosia on the 10th of July. My address is this: Feodosia, care of Suvorin, for Chekhov. Drop me a couple of words, and I’ll drop you some in return, if I haven’t gone stupid from the scorching heat.
I am glad for Gilyarovsky’s sake. He’s a good sort of fellow, and not without talent, but literarily uneducated. He’s terribly prone to commonplaces, pitiful phrases, and crackling descriptions, believing that the thing can’t be done without such ornaments. He senses beauty in other men’s work, he knows that the first and chief charm of a story is simplicity and sincerity, but he himself cannot be sincere and simple in his own stories: he lacks the courage. In this he is like those believers who dare not pray to God in Russian rather than in Church Slavonic, though they are well aware that Russian is closer both to the truth and to the heart.
His little book was confiscated back in November, because in it all the characters – retired soldiers – go begging and die of hunger. The general tone of the book is dismal and gloomy, like the bottom of a well where toads and woodlice live.
You left a shirt behind at our place. That means you’ll be visiting me once more. I’m happy to believe in old wives’ omens, and I mean to insist that they come true.
The Smagins received your letter. The poem is still causing a sensation in Mirgorod district even now. People keep copying it out without end.
Vorontsov (Veve) has little by little loosened up, and even – oh, horror! – danced a waltz. The poor fellow is oppressed by dry intellectuality and is through and through rotten with other people’s ideas, but by all appearances Vorontsov is a kind, unhappy sort, and pure in his intentions. Your guess that he means to entangle the Lintvaryovs by way of the "Epokha" is hardly well-founded. He, being an old acquaintance of the Lintvaryovs, knows perfectly well that they have no money at all.
It’s raining. The amiable Zhuk is jealous of Rozka’s fondness for the good-natured Barbos and keeps snapping at him.
Everyone here sends you their greetings and wishes you clear days. Be well, be happy, and may the heavenly powers keep you for many years to come.
My bow to all your family. My thanks to Nikolai Alekseyevich for his greeting. Remind him of his promise to come and visit us.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
