Referent tracking: this is a resemblance-comparison, not an appearance -- the crewman working the wheel merely LOOKS LIKE Pavel Mikhailovich Lintvaryov, the eldest son of the Lintvaryov household where Chekhov summered near Sumy; Pavel himself is not aboard the "Dir" and plays no part in the scene.

Pavel Mikhailovich Lintvaryov, son of Alexandra Vasilyevna Lintvaryova and brother of Georgy ("Georges," mentioned in section 8), Elena, Zinaida, and Natalya, of the Lintvaryov estate near Sumy where the Chekhovs summered -- a different Lintvaryov sibling from Georges, not the same person despite both being introduced in this letter.

Chekhov states plainly that Pavel Lintvaryov is "under police surveillance" (под надзором) -- translated faithfully and unsoftened. This is real period political surveillance (likely connected to populist/revolutionary sympathies common among educated young men of the family's circle), not a euphemism or figure of speech, and should be preserved as historical fact rather than glossed over.

Chekhov emphatically denies that the Ukrainophile minor character in "Good People" is a satirical portrait of the real Pavel Mikhailovich Lintvaryov, a member of the family the Chekhovs summered with near Sumy. This is the REAL Pavel Mikhailovich, distinct from the fictional "Pyotr Dmitrich" and "Olga Mikhailovna" discussed in the same section, who belong only to Chekhov's story.
