1 28 July 1888. The steamer "
Dir."

5 The mangy little cargo steamer "Dir" is tearing along at full steam (eight knots an hour)
from Sukhum to Poti. It is nearly midnight... In the little cabin – the only one on the steamer, and about the size of a water closet – it is unbearably stuffy and hot. It reeks of smoke, rope, fish, and the sea... You can hear the engine working: "boom, boom, boom"... Overhead and underfoot some unclean spirit creaks and groans... The darkness in the cabin sways, and the berth now rises, now sinks... My stomach’s whole attention is fixed on that berth, and it keeps, as if leveling a spirit-gauge, now rolling the seltzer water I drank up to my very throat, now sending it back down to my heels... So as not to be sick over my clothes in the dark, I dress quickly and go out... It is pitch black... My feet stumble against invisible iron fittings, against rope; wherever you step there are barrels, sacks, rags... Coal dust underfoot. In the darkness I run into something made of bars; it is the cage with the roe deer I saw during the day; they are not asleep, and are listening anxiously to the pitching... Beside the cage sit two Turks, also not asleep... Groping my way, I climb the little ladder to the captain’s bridge... A warm but sharp, disagreeable wind tries to snatch off my cap... The ship is rolling... The mast ahead of the bridge sways evenly and unhurriedly, like a metronome; I try to look away from it, but my eyes will not obey and, together with my stomach, follow only what is moving... Sea and sky are dark, no shore is visible, the deck looks like a black smear... Not a single light...
6 Behind me is a window... I look in and see a man
with the face of Pavel Mikhailovich... He is gazing intently at something and turning a wheel with the air of a man performing the Ninth
Symphony... Beside me stands a small, stout captain in yellow boots,
resembling Korneli Pushkaryov in build and face... He is talking to me about Caucasian settlers, about the stifling heat, about winter storms, and all the while peering intently into the dark distance and toward the shore...
7 "And you seem to be pulling to the left again!" he says in passing to someone; or: "There ought to be lights visible here... Do you see them?"
8 "No, sir!" answers someone out of the darkness.
9 "Get up to the upper platform and take a look!"
10 A dark figure looms up on the bridge and climbs unhurriedly upward somewhere... A minute later comes the answer:
12 I peer to the left, where the lighthouse lights should be, take the captain’s binoculars, and see nothing... Half an hour passes, an hour... The mast sways evenly, the unclean spirit creaks, the wind makes another try at my cap... There is no nausea now, but it is eerie...
13 Suddenly the captain bolts from his place and, with the words "Damned puppet!" runs off somewhere aft.
14 "Left!" he shouts anxiously at the top of his voice. "Left... right! A-r-r-ya... va... aaah!"
15 An unintelligible command is heard, the steamer gives a shudder, the unclean spirit shrieks... "A va-va-va!" shouts the captain; close by the bow a bell is rung, on the black deck there is running about, banging, alarmed cries... "Dir" gives another shudder, pants with strain, and seems to want to go into reverse...
16 "What is it?" I ask, feeling something like a small terror. There is no answer.
17 "He means to collide with us, the damned puppet!" comes the captain’s sharp cry. "Le-e-eft!"
18 Near the bow some red lights appear, and suddenly, amid the noise, comes a whistle – not from the "Dir," but from some other steamer. Now it is clear: we are going to collide! "Dir" pants, shudders, and seems not to be moving at all, as if waiting for the moment it must go to the bottom... (Here a small misunderstanding befell me, lasting no more than half a minute but costing me no small torment... For half a minute I was convinced that it was I who had wrecked the steamer. I will tell you about this misunderstanding when we meet; it is too long a business to write out here.)
19 But then, just when in my opinion everything was already lost, red lights appear off to the left and the silhouette of a steamer begins to take shape. A long black hull glides past, blinking its red eyes guiltily and whistling guiltily...
20 "Phew!
What steamer is that?" I ask the captain. The captain looks at the silhouette through his binoculars and says:
21 "That is the ’Tweedie.’"
22 After a short silence we get to talking about
the "Vesta," which collided with two steamers and went down. Under the influence of this conversation the sea, the night, the wind begin to seem hateful things, made for man’s destruction, and, looking at the stout little captain, I feel pity for him... Something whispers to me that this poor fellow too, sooner or later, will go to the bottom and choke on the salt water...
23 I go back to my cabin... It is stuffy and smells of the galley...
My travelling companion, Suvorin-fils, is already asleep... I strip bare and lie down... The darkness sways, the berth seems to breathe... Boom, boom, boom... Bathed in sweat, gasping for breath, and feeling a heaviness through my whole body from the pitching, I ask myself: "Why am I here?"
24 I wake... It is no longer dark... Soaking wet, with a foul taste in my mouth, I dress and go out... Everything is covered in dew... The roe deer look out through the bars of their cage with an almost human expression, as if wanting to ask: why are we here? The captain still stands motionless, peering into the distance, just as before...
