Loss of the Vesta

the Vesta

also: Веста, Vesta

The Russian steamer "Vesta," famous for an 1877 Russo-Turkish War engagement, which later collided with two other steamers and sank; recalled by Chekhov and the captain of the "Dir" in conversation after their own near collision, souring the mood and prompting Chekhov's passing pity for the captain's fate.
