The "good-natured" (добродушный) household dog at the Lintvaryov estate at Luka, one of the pack -- with Zhuk, Pulka, Rozka, and Tsenzura -- that habitually nips at the pigs' ears and pushes into the family's dining room.

Barbos, one of the Lintvaryov household's dogs at Luka (see also, where he and Zhuk first appear together with the same epithets, "добродушный Барбос" / "good-natured Barbos"). Barbos is a dog, not a person -- his "Jesuitical smile" is comic personification, distinct from the direct second-person address ("you") that Chekhov uses for Barantsevich throughout the letter.
