Headnote
1 Written from Sumy on Trinity Sunday, 12 June 1888, to the poet Aleksey Pleshcheyev shortly after his three-week visit to the Lintvaryov estate at Luka broke up and he was seen off at the station.
2 Chekhov thanks Pleshcheyev warmly for the visit, describes the household’s mournful, tipsy send-off (including a middle-of-the-night telegram sent after too much claret-cup) and the raucous third-class train ride home, then runs through small news of the day: a country fair with trinket purchases, plans to drive out to the Smagins’ and Sorochintsy, greetings from family and the estate’s dogs, a good catch of fish, and a closing description of the night sky.
First of all, dear and precious Aleksey Nikolayevich, my warm and heartfelt thanks to you for having come to see me; I tell you sincerely that the three weeks I spent at Luka in your irreplaceable company make up one of the best and most interesting pages of my life’s story. Second, you cannot imagine how put out I am that you’ve gone, and how downcast and sour we all turned once we had seen you into the railway carriage. The ladies could barely hold back their tears, and I inwardly vowed to heaven that next year, too, I shall try to lure you off to the promised land.
No sooner had you gone than we went back to the station and drank another jug of claret-cup to your health. Having drunk it, we sent off a telegram, and only 2–3 hours later did it occur to us that it – the telegram, that is – would alarm you. I expect it woke you up.
We made the return trip from Vorozhba in third class: we made a racket, shouted, and listened to the Ukrainians singing in the carriage. At home we drank to your health once more and went to sleep with the sad thought that tomorrow we should no longer see you. Even Censorship had a drink – that must mean something!
There’s a fair on today in Sumy. I bought two little whistles, 8 spoons nobody needs, 4 cups that smell of varnish, and a pair of earrings for 10 kopecks, which I gave to an esteemed comrade of mine. I also bought, by the way, a cigarette case with a young lady on it, for 15 kopecks.
We’ve hired a team of four horses to drive tomorrow to the Smagins’ and on to Sorochintsy. I’ll write you a letter from the Smagins’.
All the Chekhovs and Lintvaryovs send you their greetings. The personable Zhuk, the good-natured Barbos, the dandyish Pulka, and the ingenue Rozka are all alive and well, and as before go about nipping the pigs’ ears and pushing their way into our dining room.
Artemenko caught a pike today, and I took 6 crucian carp out of the fish-traps.
Tomorrow we’re driving off in the most enormous ancestral barouche, the very one that came down to the Lintvaryovs as an inheritance from the aunt of Ivan Fyodorovich Shponka.
Well, keep well, keep calm, keep happy, and don’t forget us poor sinners.
My respects to all your family,
I’m off to bed.
A beautiful night. Not a cloud in the sky, and the moon is shining for all it’s worth.
