To N. A. Leikin, 21 June 1888. Sumy.

Headnote

1 Written from Sumy on 21 June 1888 to Nikolai Leikin, editor of "Oskolki," on Chekhov’s return from a trip through Poltava province (Lebedin, Gadyach, Sorochintsy), country made famous by Gogol.

2 Chekhov describes the journey with enthusiasm – fine weather, a comfortable carriage, 400 versts covered, the start of haymaking – and confesses a passing wish to abandon literature for medicine and country life in Ukraine, praising the local peasantry’s contentment and culture. He then turns to magazine business: congratulating two "Oskolki" contributors, Lazarev and Ezhov, on their engagements, commenting on a piece by Leikin and on illustrations in the journal, noting his brother Alexander’s return to Petersburg with his children, mentioning an upcoming trip to Suvorin’s in Feodosia, confirming receipt of books Leikin had sent, passing on congratulations to Lazarev and Ezhov, and closing with news that the poet A. N. Pleshcheev had just spent three weeks as his guest.

Your second letter, kindest Nikolai Aleksandrovich, I received yesterday, on returning from Poltava province. The first letter had reached me shortly before I left. I was in Lebedin, in Gadyach, in Sorochintsy, and in many places made famous by Gogol. What places those are! I am simply enchanted. To my good fortune, the weather held magnificent and warm the whole time; I traveled in a comfortable spring-carriage and arrived in Poltava province just as the haymaking was beginning there. I covered 400 versts by carriage, and slept in ten different places... Everything I saw and heard was so new, so good, and so wholesome that all along the road the beguiling thought never left me – to throw over literature, which has grown loathsome to me, settle in some village on the bank of the Psel, and take up medicine. Were I alone in the world, I would have stayed in Poltava province, since nothing binds me to Moscow by way of affection. In summer I would live in Ukraine, and for the winter come to dearest Petersburg... Apart from the natural scenery, nothing strikes me so much in Ukraine as the general contentment, the good health of the people, and the high degree of development in the peasant here, who is at once intelligent, devout, musical, sober, moral, and always cheerful and well fed. Of any antagonism between peasants and landowners there is not a whisper.
That Lazarev and Ezhov are getting married, I had already heard. My congratulations to the editorial staff on the lawful marriage of its contributors, and my wish for offspring and an undefiled marriage bed. Let them marry! It is a good thing. Better a poor marriage than a fine bachelorhood. I myself would gladly bridle myself with the bonds of Hymen, but alas! circumstances are master of me, not I of them.
I liked your... "The First Night." It is very well written; only the title does not quite suit it: it intrigues the reader and makes him expect God knows what. I am reading "Oskolki." I like Kaktus’s dedications. That is fitting and handsome. Dalkevich’s drawings are nothing but fashion-plate stuff, fit to satisfy only a middling hairdresser.
My brother Alexander has returned to Petersburg with his children. He brought the children along only to show them off.
The weather here is warm. The fruits of the earth are ripening. In early July I am going to Feodosia, to Suvorin’s. Do you have any commission for me there?
Your books were received in my absence by Lazarev, who was charged with notifying you of their receipt and thanking you for your kindness. I am in your debt.
If you write to Lazarev and Ezhov, congratulate them on my behalf. I would congratulate them myself, but I do not have their addresses. Write to them that I wish them every good thing, especially literary success, to which their decency and industry give them full claim – the more so as both of them, Lazarev especially, are talented...
Well, keep well. I am sitting down now to write for my daily bread.
Did I write to you that A. N. Pleshcheev has been staying with me? He lived with me for three weeks.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
