To I. L. Leontyev, 10 May 1888. Sumy.
Headnote
1 Written from the Lintvaryov estate near Sumy on 10 May 1888 to Ivan Leontyev, who wrote under the pen name Shcheglov, a fellow writer and friend Chekhov addresses here by his nickname "Captain."
2 Chekhov paints an idyllic scene of country life – birdsong, riverside scenery, boats and fiddles – and needles Shcheglov, still stuck in the city, to make the trip down for a visit, arguing the cost is trivial against the material he’ll gather for future stories. He closes with a half-serious, half-comic postscript about the lack of an outhouse and the mosquitoes.

10 May. Sumy, Kharkov province, the estate of A. V. Lintvaryova.
Captain! I am no longer a man of letters, nor an Egmont. I sit at an open window listening to the nightingales, cuckoos, and hoopoes calling in the old, overgrown garden. I can hear the Ukrainian lads riding past our door down to the river on horseback, and the foals whinnying. The sun is blazing.
I’m off to town in a moment for provisions and the post. When I get back from town I’ll go fishing at the river. The river is wide, deep, with islands... One bank is high and steep, grown over with oaks and willow, the other slopes gently down, scattered with white huts and orchards. Boats dart about on the water. Yesterday, on St. Nicholas’s day, the local lads rowed up and down the river playing fiddles. Frogs and all sorts of birds are calling. Somewhere in the reeds some mysterious bird is crying out – hard to catch sight of, and known around here as the "bugai." It cries like a cow shut up in a barn, or like a trumpet rousing the dead. You can hear it day and night. Along the bank the lads walk about with fishing rods.
Lots of boats. We ride out to the mill every day. The country here is marvelous. Really, one has to be quite the crocodile to go on stewing in the city the way you do. Listen, why don’t you come down? If you have 70 roubles, I assure you that’s quite enough to make the trip, enjoy yourself thoroughly, and get home safely again. And if you don’t have the money, borrow it, steal it, but come. You’ll spend 70 roubles and bring back 700. You’ll find no end of subjects here and lay in enough trimmings for five novellas. And the scenery here – it would serve you so well!
Come. There’s room enough for everyone.
I’m inviting you in earnest, so think it over in earnest too.
Write to me. Out in the country newspapers and letters are of great interest. Keep well, and God keep you.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
P.S. There’s no privy. One has to pay nature’s debt in full view of nature, in the gullies and under the bushes. My whole backside is bitten to pieces by mosquitoes.
