1 Written from the Lintvaryov estate near Sumy in late May 1888 to the writer Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko, a fellow author Chekhov held in high regard and had recently gotten to know.
2 A warm, informal invitation. Chekhov sends Korolenko a copy of one of his books, reminds him of his earlier promise to visit, and paints an enthusiastic picture of the Sumy countryside – its air, light, and open space – to draw him there between late July and August, including an outing to the Sorochintsy Fair. He closes by passing on greetings from his houseguest, the poet A. N. Pleshcheyev, and from his own family.

I am sending you, dear Vladimir Galaktionovich, my little book, and I remind you, by the way, of your promise to visit Pel. It is so good here, so good that I cannot even describe it! The countryside is magnificent; everything is beautiful, there is a wealth of open space, the people are good, the air is warm, and the colors, too, are warm and soft. There is no dampness in the evenings, the nights are warm... In a word, you will not regret it if you come. I expect you at the end of July or in August, and I hope you will not refuse to go with me to the Sorochintsy Fair.
Посылаю Вам, милый Владимир Галактионович, свою книжицу и напоминаю Вам, кстати, о Вашем обещании побывать на Пеле. Уж очень у меня хорошо, так хорошо, что и описать нельзя! Природа великолепна; всюду красиво, простора пропасть, люди хорошие, воздух теплый, тоны тоже теплые, мягкие. Вечерами не бывает сырости, ночи теплые... Одним словом, Вы не раскаетесь, если приедете. Жду Вас в конце июля или в августе и надеюсь, что Вы не откажете мне съездить со мной на Сорочинскую ярмарку.
