Headnote

1 Written from Sumy on 12 August 1888 to the publisher and editor Nikolai Aleksandrovich Leikin, who ran the humor magazine "Fragments" ("Oskolki") where Chekhov had gotten his start. Chekhov had just returned from an extended trip through the Crimea and the Caucasus.

2 Chekhov gives Leikin a travelogue of his journey: twelve days at Feodosia with the publisher Suvorin, a steamer trip to Batum with stops at Sukhum and the New Athos monastery, the Rioni valley and Poti, the Surami Pass road to Tiflis, and the bleak run on to Baku, where a planned crossing of the Caspian toward Bukhara and Persia was cut short. He praises the Georgian Military Highway extravagantly, gives his return date to Moscow, sends regards, dismisses the fashionable spas (Kislovodsk, Yalta) as spoiled, asks Leikin to send a book to a Moscow address, and closes with good wishes to Leikin’s family.

Returned from distant wanderings, I send you, most kind Nikolai Aleksandrovich, my greetings and my report. The report will of necessity be brief, for the places I was in and the people I saw are too numerous. I went to the Crimea. I lived twelve days in Feodosia with Suvorin, bathed in the sea, idled about; I drove out to Aivazovsky’s estate. From Feodosia I dashed by steamer to Batum. On the way I put in for half a day at Sukhum – a most beautiful little town with a tropical heat, all drowned in dense, un-Russian greenery – and for a day at New Athos, the monastery. Here at Athos it is so good that words fail: waterfalls, eucalyptus, tea bushes, cypresses, olive trees, and above all – sea and mountains, mountains, mountains... From Athos and Sukhum I came to Poti. Here is the river Rioni, famous for its Rioni valley and its sturgeon. An abundance of greenery. Every street forms itself into an avenue of poplars. Batum is a large, military-commercial-foreign-café-chantant town, in which at every step you feel that we have conquered the Turks. There is nothing particular about it in itself (though it does abound in houses of ill repute), but the surroundings are ravishing. Especially fine is the road to Kars and the swift little river Chorokhi.
The road from Batum to Tiflis, with its famous Surami Pass, is original and full of poetry; the whole way you keep looking out the window and gasping: mountains, tunnels, crags, rivers, waterfalls, little waterfalls. But the road from Tiflis to Baku is an abomination of desolation, a bald patch covered in sand and made for the habitation of Persians, tarantulas, and solifuges; not a single tree, not a blade of grass... a hellish tedium. Baku itself and the Caspian Sea are such trash that not for a million would I agree to live there. No roofs, no trees either, Persian mugs everywhere, a heat of 50 degrees, it reeks of kerosene, oily mud squelches underfoot, the drinking water is salt...
From Baku I meant to sail across the Caspian to Uzun-Ada, to the Transcaspian railway, on to Bukhara and Persia, but I had to turn the shafts back: my travelling companion, Suvorin’s son, received a telegram about the death of his brother and could go no farther...
You have seen the Caucasus. It seems you have also seen the Georgian Military Highway. But if you have not yet travelled that road, then pawn your wife, your children, "Fragments," and go. Never in my life have I seen anything like it. It is poetry through and through, not a road but a wondrous, fantastic tale written by a demon who is in love with Tamara.
I shall be in Moscow by the 5th of September. For now I am living at Pel. The weather is not bad.
All our people send you their regards.
I was not at Kislovodsk, nor at the spas generally. Travellers say that all those charming places are dreadful trash. I cannot bear it when poetry is mixed with whoring and fisticuffs. Yalta made a nasty impression on me.
If you would be so good as to make a gift of "Down and Feathers" to your admirer, then be so kind as to send the little book to Moscow, addressed to Yakov Alekseyevich Korneev, at the Korneev house (Kudrinskaya-Sadovaya). I shall receive it upon my arrival in Moscow.
Be well for many years to come. My regards to Praskovya Nikiforovna and to Fedya.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
