Headnote

1 Written from Moscow on 3 May 1888 to the writer Ivan Leontiev, who published under the pen name I. Shcheglov and whom Chekhov nicknamed "Alba" (and elsewhere "Zhean," a play on "Jean"). Chekhov announces his departure two days hence for the Lintvaryov estate near Sumy, gives his new mailing address, and invites Shcheglov to visit over the summer – though not in June, which he plans to spend travelling.

2 He reports sending a story to "Severny Vestnik" that he is not proud of, and another nearly finished for "Novoye Vremya." The bulk of the letter is a reply to a proposal from the writer B. B. Leman that Petersburg authors agree to advertise one another’s books in their own volumes, on condition of being "in solidarity" with one another. Chekhov, writing to Shcheglov as "dear Zhean," rejects the whole idea of literary solidarity as a clique loyalty test, arguing that ordinary decency between colleagues needs no such artificial bond – and promises Shcheglov his own goodwill and support regardless of any disagreement between them.

Dear Alba! At last you may congratulate me: the day after tomorrow, that is on the 5th of May, I am off dahin there (German)... So you must address your answer to this letter thus: "Sumy, Kharkov province, the estate of A. V. Lintvaryova." After the 10th of May A. N. Pleshcheyev will be coming to see me... Why shouldn’t you come too? Ah, you! In any case I shall expect you for the whole summer. Perhaps you’ll think it over and come! Only don’t expect me to wait for you in June – the whole of that month I shall be travelling. If you do come, bring three pounds of good ham sausage, the most expensive kind (on my account).
I’ve sent a story to "Severny Vestnik." I’m a little ashamed of it. It’s deadly dull and so full of philosophizing-wisdom that it’s positively sickening... Unpleasant, but there was no help for it, since I need money like air. Tomorrow I finish a story for "Novoye Vremya." This summer I shall write nothing but trifles.
I’ve had a letter from Leman; he informs me that "we (that is, all you Petersburgers) have agreed" to print announcements of one another’s books, invites me to agree as well, and warns that only those persons "more or less in solidarity with us" may be included among the elect. In reply I sent my consent, along with the question: "How do you know with whom I am in solidarity and with whom I am not?" How you Petersburgers love stuffiness! Doesn’t it stifle all of you, words like solidarity, the union of young writers, community of interests, and so on? Solidarity and such things I understand on the stock exchange, in politics, in religious matters (a sect) and the like, but solidarity among young literary men is neither possible nor necessary... We cannot think and feel alike; our aims are different, or we have none at all; we know one another little or not at all, and so there is nothing for solidarity to fasten onto securely... And is it needed? No... To help a colleague, to respect his person and his work, not to gossip about him and not to envy him, not to lie to him and not to play the hypocrite before him – for all this one need be, not so much a young literary man, as simply a human being... Let us be ordinary people, let us treat everyone alike, and then there will be no need of an artificially wound-up solidarity. The insistent striving after a private, professional, clique solidarity, of the sort wanted among you, will breed an involuntary spying on one another, suspicion, surveillance, and we shall, without meaning to, become something like Jesuit confederates set to watch each other... I, dear Zhean, am not in solidarity with you, but I promise you, for as long as I live, full freedom as a writer; that is, you may write wherever and however you please, think after the fashion of Koreisha even, change your convictions and directions a thousand times over and so on and so forth, and my human relations to you will not shift by a single grain, and I shall always print announcements of your books on my own covers. The very same I can promise all my other colleagues, and the very same I should wish for myself. To my mind these are the most normal relations. Only on such terms are respect, and even friendship, and sympathy in life’s hard moments, possible.
But I’ve run on too long. Heaven keep you!
Yours, A. Chekhov.
