Headnote

1 Written from Moscow on 14 September 1888 to the writer Ivan Leontiev, who published under the pen name I. Shcheglov and whom Chekhov called "Jean" (a nickname affectionately rendered here as "dear Jean"), still teasing him over his notoriously illegible hand. Chekhov reports on his own restless return to city life after a summer of idleness at Luka, his money worries, and a string of quick items of literary and personal news.

2 He complains he cannot afford to stay idle any longer, describes his plan to write hard for cash through the winter and place work again with his old outlets ("Oskolki,Peterburgskaya gazeta," and others, plus new venues such as "Sever" and "Niva"), and tosses off a half-joking "should I get married?" He asks whether Shcheglov likes his one-act farce "The Bear" before sending it to the censor, jokes about Shcheglov’s presumed earnings from his own play "Mountains of the Caucasus" against his own 15 roubles and mounting debts, and describes a first-year gymnasium boy he has taken in as a lodger. He invites Shcheglov to visit if he comes to Moscow, promises to ask at Korsh’s theater about Shcheglov’s play "The Summer Husband," and closes with news that Suvorin is still in Feodosia building a house, followed by a wry closing reflection on wasting one’s life.

Ah, dear Jean, may hell swallow you for your outrageous, sacrilegious handwriting! I couldn’t make out five words... I can just imagine what your handwriting costs the typesetters and copyists!
I am alive and well, living in Moscow. That’s all I have to report about myself. No offense to me intended, but nature and absolute idleness used to satisfy me no end: I was content and at peace; but now, when by lege necessitatis by the necessity of law (Lat.). I have to sit myself down to obligatory labor and, like everyone else, eat my bread by the sweat of my brow, I am discontented, I fall into the blues, I whine, I preach morals, I play the misanthrope, and I construct in my skull such final conclusions that God preserve us. In the 10 days I’ve been living in Moscow, I’ve left the house only twice, and then only for a minute; the rest of the time I sit within four walls, drive myself to work, and wait for spring, when I might again be free to loaf, to wander about, to eat, to write long letters, and to argue with liberal-minded young ladies.
My dream: to earn as much money as possible by spring, which I need in order to carry out my plans, conceived in silence. I shall try to write for all I’m worth, hither and yon, every which way, sparing no effort, until I’m sick of it; I’ll go back to the "Petersburg > gaz," to "Oskolki," and to the other cradles of my fame, I’ll go to "Sever," to "Niva," and wherever you like... Money, money!
Should I get married, or what???
Do you like "The Bear"? If so, I’ll send it to the censor. I can just imagine how much money you’ve made with your "Mountains of the Caucasus"! Here I sit with 15 roubles, and the future, when I begin to receive fees, seems to me as distant as the Last Judgment. I’ve run up more than 500 roubles in debt over the summer. Well, aren’t I a son of a hen?
To air out and freshen up my flat, I’ve taken in as a lodger youth in the form of a first-year gymnasium boy, who walks on his hands, gets failing marks, and jumps on everyone’s back.
How is your book trade going?
If you’re ever in Moscow, you’re most welcome at my den. Should you see Tikhonov, pass on my invitation to him as well. About "The Summer Husband" – the play – I’ve heard and read nothing yet; if I go to Korsh’s theater, I’ll ask around about new plays, toss a stone into your garden, and let you know the results of the conversation. But that is hardly likely to happen before 2–3 weeks.
Suvorin is still in Feodosia, where he is building himself a castle. Well, be happy.
And that we are wasting our lives – that is just as true as that you wear spectacles. Though the devil only knows!
