Headnote

1 Written from Moscow on 14 October 1888 to Alexei Suvorin, this letter continues the run of correspondence begun with the long letter of 2 October and the brief note of 10 October. It answers Suvorin’s last letter point by point – Chekhov’s own coughing up of blood, Suvorin’s recent kindness toward Chekhov’s troubled brother, a bout of fever in the household’s young lodger, an unstageable play, and a bit of literary business – before closing with an unexpected second item that is NOT part of the letter to Suvorin proper.

Hello again, Alexei Sergeyevich! Jean Shcheglov probably passed on to you yesterday or today my letter enclosing the story by my protege Yezhov. Today I’m writing in answer to your last letter. First, about the coughing up of blood... I first noticed it in myself three years ago, in the District Court: it lasted some three or four days and caused no small commotion in my soul and in my apartment. It was copious. The blood was coming from the right lung. After that I noticed blood in myself about twice a year, sometimes copious, that is, thickly coloring every bit of spit, sometimes not copious... The day before yesterday, or the day before that – I don’t remember – I noticed blood in myself; it was there yesterday too, but today it’s gone already. Every winter, autumn, and spring, and on every damp summer day, I cough. But all this frightens me only when I see blood: in blood flowing from the mouth there is something ominous, as in a lurid glow in the sky. But when there’s no blood, I don’t get alarmed and don’t threaten Russian literature with "yet another loss." The fact is that consumption or some other serious lung ailment is recognized only by a whole combination of symptoms, and in my case that very combination is precisely what’s missing. Bleeding from the lungs is not in itself serious; sometimes blood pours from the lungs for a whole day, gushing, and the whole household and the patient himself are in terror, but it ends with the patient not ending – and that’s the case more often than not. So take note, just in case: if someone who is known not to be consumptive suddenly starts bleeding from the mouth, there’s no need to be horrified. A woman can lose half her blood with impunity, and a man a little less than half.
If the bleeding that happened to me in the District Court had been a symptom of incipient consumption, I would long since have been in the next world – that’s my logic.
As for my brother, I have only to thank you. You’ll agree it would have been a bad thing if a man who hallucinates, or who lies compulsively when on a drinking bout, had been left without any moral support at all. You wrote to me, I wrote to him, and between the two of us we did what needed doing. If not for your letter about my brother, a great deal would have remained unclear to me, and that is worse than any amount of distress.
For a full twenty-four hours my lodger, the schoolboy, Ashanin’s grandson, lay in bed with a temperature of 40°, a headache, and delirium. Imagine the general terror, and mine especially! His mother is a woman of a rare and likeable sort. I was tormented by the question: send her a telegram or not? A telegram would have stunned her – the boy is her only son – but not to send one – I have no right. Fortunately, the fledgling revived, and the question resolved itself. By the way: the fledgling’s form-master came from the gymnasium to see him, a downtrodden man, cowed by official circulars, none too bright, and hated by the children for his severity (his method is to take hold of a boy by the shoulders and shake him; imagine the hands of someone you hate clamped onto your own shoulders). He grew embarrassed in my presence, never once sat down, and complained the whole time about his superiors, who have turned schoolmasters like him into drill-sergeants. The two of us played the liberal a bit, talked about the south (it turned out we were fellow countrymen), sighed together... When I said to him: "And how freely one breathes in our southern gymnasiums!" – he gave a hopeless wave of the hand and left.
Form-masters are obliged to visit their pupils’ homes; their position is absurd, especially when, arriving at a pupil’s house, they find a crowd of guests there: the embarrassment is general.
I’ll have a word about "The Seducer of Seville" at Korsh’s, sound out the actors, but it’s hardly likely to be staged! It would need special sets and costumes, and Korsh is stingy in the extreme. And there’s no one there to act it. Advise Maslov, if he has no time to write comedies, to take up vaudevilles instead... After all, the difference between a full-length play and a one-act piece is only a matter of quantity. And you too should quietly write a vaudeville a one-act drama or comedy. (under a pseudonym), and while I’m at it, I’ll enroll you in the Dramatic Society.
Keep well.
Yours, A. Chekhov.

Much-esteemed Ivan Pavlovich!
I have the honor to inform you that my son, Nikolai Rensky, was not in class on the 12th of this month, at our insistence. On the evening of the 11th he was at church, watching a wedding, and was locked in the church through the sexton’s oversight. Two hours later we brought him home, after a long search. Fearing that the fright might have a weakening effect on his nervous system, we kept him home the next day so that he might calm down.
