Reading notes
- To F. O. Shekhtel, 8 June 1886. Babkino. §6 открыл у нас парикмахерскую
"Opened a barbershop": a joking exaggeration -- Begichev, a former Moscow Imperial Theaters director and family friend, had apparently taken to cutting hair for amusement at Babkino, folded into the letter's running catalogue of household absurdities.
- To N. A. Leikin, 30 January 1884. Moscow. §6 Ashanin (the former theater director Begichev)
Vladimir Begichev, former director of the Moscow Imperial Theaters, appears in Markevich's novels under the transparent pseudonym "Ashanin."
- To A. P. Lensky, 29 November 1891. Moscow. §3 the late V. P. Begichev's son-in-law, Mr. Golubev, has sent me a bill
Vladimir Petrovich Begichev, the former director of the Moscow Imperial Theatres and family acquaintance of the Chekhovs, lightly fictionalized as "Ashanin" in Markevich's novels; identified here as recently deceased (\textit{покойного}), with the matter at hand -- a bill -- now being routed through his son-in-law's household.
